If you're totally new, start with the new series (2004 onwards, has Eccleston in it) and work from there. Any strange references that crop up which you may think are interesting? Use the Doctor Who wiki (tardis.wikia?) and look it up. Best way to learn.
Apart from a few villains (Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans), you don't need to know anything about the old series to understand the new series (2004 onwards). Even so, the villains are well enough introduced that you don't even need to see any of the old episodes to get what's going on.

Did anyone else get the "Daleks tried to pilot the planet" reference? In one of the old episodes the Daleks tried to hollow out Earth and fit a device that made them able to pilot the planet through space.

Can't say I'm head-over-heels in love with 'em either.

The funny thing is, a few minutes before I saw this thread I was considering making a Doctor Who discussion thread.

There's also the audio adventures done by Big Finish. http://www.bigfinish.com/Doctor-Who

Blake's 7 fanbase is mostly at http://www.horizon.org.uk/news.php

And be careful, there's the usual slash and prOn to make you run to the Cloister room.

And just remember:

I've heard that a Blake 7 revival is in the works. Can't remember from where, but I'm almost certain that it was a reliable source.

Well, there was my post half a page ago... ;)

It's been in Development Hell for over ten years now; but Sky have finally got the rights.

Dear lord, we can but hope. Absolutely adored that show...haven't seen it in years, though. I wonder if it ages well.
It does, as much as any sci-fi series does. Man, I'd kill to be able to carry off Servalan's hair!

EDIT: I really wish they hadn't mentioned that god awful Bionic Whiner remake.

Peter Kay

Best known for: Cult Channel 4 comedy Phoenix Nights. He also had a cameo role in Coronation Street.

Odds: 16/1
Kay couldn't be the doctor- he was an alien that got killed off in an earlier Doctor light episode. You know, the one with the group? Can't remember the Ep name though.

And if this happens, I will personally hunt down and shoot Stephen Moffat with a shotgun for ruining Doctor Who. I think he's got a bit more sense than casting that moron though.

nope could happen, when Romana regenerated she took on the form of a character from a previous episode, so it's possible

That's right, Lala West originally played Princess Astra in The Armageddon Factor. What always annoyed me was that they wrote Romana wasting a perfectly good incarnation (even though I couldn't stand Mary Tamm) just because she was tired of how she looked. *sneer*

it's The Honourable Lalla Ward, not Lalla West and she's married to Richard Dawkins too

Mary Tamm was fired/quit cause she got pregnant, not cause of how she looked

Okay, fair enough. My knowledge of old Dr Who is pretty much limited to the monsters since I watched it all whilst I was younger. Just don't mention that piece of info to anyone in the BBC advocating Peter Kay as Dr Who. I think he'd be a really bad bet. Out of the list, I think Rhys Ifans would probably be best- he can do great serious acting when he needs to and can do lighthearted stuff equally well. I considered Alan Davies for a bit but figured that he's a bit too mellow to be The Doctor.

I liked the autons from the old series, it was nice to see they were the premier antagonists.

I know alot of people who got turned off by the new Dr. Who because they were newbies to the story and when the first Dr. died they didn't bother watching it anymore. Luckily when my wife, who had never seen it before, turned to me and said "I really like the cast of this show", I had to tell her what was going to happen. She loves it, but said had she not have known he was going to regenerate she probably would not be watching it now. Some people don't like change in a show I suppose. I've been a fan since Tom Baker and was extremely excited when I first heard they were doing a new one.

funnily enough second time they've been in the premier of a new doctor, they were in the first serial with John Pewtree

Anyway, we should be referring to her as President Romanadvoratrelundar; unless the destruction of the Matrix is canon.
Well, it's either that, or Fred.
