This will lead nowhere good. Imagine, for a moment if you will.

sigh. This thought is too compellingly bad.

Imagine Russel Brand in the role of the Doctor

SAY NEVER!

Chiwetel Ejiofor could pull it off, but if you're going to change the doctor's colour why make him black and not Asian? Either way he must remain British. It wouldn't work any other way.

No, they need to someone get all the surviving Doctors into some weird muli-dimensional/time stream storyline so that I can see Baker and Tennet face-off.

They could explain Baker being fat and old because he's 'the evil version'.

Not in the slightest.

Shoehorning people into a role "because they're Black" is pretty bad.
Shoehorning anyone "just coz they're X" is stupid.

While I wouldn't mind seeing something other than white British person for a change, they need to make sure that they get someone who can actually do the part.

No. Just no.
The Doctor should never, ever be black. Simply because they would only be doing it to appease fools who play the race card.
Until they can think up a valid reason why he would suddenly change race then it is just a stupid idea.

However I would get a vindictive little giggle if they made the 13th Doctor black seeing as how their 13th and final form is meant to be totally evil.
1) A good actor maybe?

2) He splits or some such nonsense does he not? The evil one is the Valeyard? I'm not a buff.

first off they wouldnt, secondly they could not because i dont know if you noticed but fishbourne and freeman are getting on and being a doctor entails a lot of running and moving about.

but yes it would be nice to see some cultural diversity in doctor who.
What about Mickey and Martha?
mickey showed up every now and again as a comic relief and martha was just there and wasn't really all that interesting, for some reason i always thought she was lazily written.

I really don't care what race or gender the next incarnation of the Doctor is so long as they get read of the lousy non-entity currently playing him. The last programme on the Beeb that I actively tuned in to and I cannot stand it, I don't give a fark about some floppy-haired bloody schoolboy trying to play what should be a very complex character.

I don't think the next Doctor should be black for the sake of being black. Just as much as I'd like the next Doctor to be, say, a woman, doesn't mean they should cast him as one just for the sake of it. They should only do that if she genuinely deserves the role, and did better in the auditions than anyone else did. Race doesn't really matter, although I imagine the BBC would be a bit hesitant about casting anyone dramatically different.

Exactly.

Besides the two people OP mention are not British, which in my mind (and several other posters, and probably the BBCs mind) a must for a doctor.

Other than that I think anyone who can play the part good should be allowed to, regardless of skincolor.

That said I also heard about this feminist group calling out for a female Doctor... To me that is the same as casting a woman to play James Bond... or Superman...

The Doctor is a man, yes he can change his face, but he is still a man. (Although Matt smiths changing scene did joke about him being a girl :p)

If it was a good, British actor then yes by all means although I'll be sorely disappointed if the next Doctor isn't ginger.
Both Tennant brings up the fact that he's still not ginger so I think it's coming.

Joseph Paterson is the perfect candidate.

Not that well known but has a role in Peep Show and Survivors in the UK. And he's British so that would work. Apparently they were considering him anyway before Matt Smith got the part.

Err...

Then again...they did only seem to get younger after the first, but, I don't think it's fair to say that an older actor couldn't play the Doctor, and really seems to be a rather unsubtle bit of ageism at work in the television industry. i.e. that young people will only finder younger actors engaging.

The Doctor should be played by a good actor. That is the most important thing.

1. The Doctor is white. I don't know how race works on Gallifrey but I think, even with the Rassilon gene, changing a main character's race is kind of a biggie.
Considering one of Romana's potential regenerations was blue-skinned I don't think it's a real problem. I will have to disagree with you. While the doctor shouldn't be made black just for a gimmick, there should be no discrimination in picking the most talented actor. It's one of the few settings where a character can swap races without batting an eyelid. I think a black Doctor could get in some funny/interesting situations where he's being subjected to racism and he doesn't understand, because it's just another face to him and he barely acknowledges the difference.

But I do agree he must be British.
