Damnit I just missed the beginning, and arrived downstairs on the sofa a second before he got shot. What happened before that?

THAT WAS CRAP!

There was nothing scary, nothing funny, nothing tearjerking, nothing heartwarming, nothing awesome and NOTHING NEW! Previous first episodes have managed at least one of every single type of the above.

That episode is pretty much the worst episode of Doctor Who I have ever watched, and I can even bring a little persepctive to that by saying that in the course of the last couple of weeks I have watched my way through every season of NuWho including all the specials and one offs, and this one was beyond the bottom of the barrel.

Completely assinine and pointless from start to finish and I can only hope that Stephen Moffat actually has something interesting planned for the next few weeks or I may seriously consider just not watching it, which given it has been my only regular tv viewing in the last FIVE YEARS, would be a little unfortunate.

When did Moffat stop being a good writer?
So you weren't shocked when the Doctor was shot mid regeneration and killed instantly?

As I have stated before. I leapt up out of my seat when the Doctor was shot...
Also, CGI is so much better looking so far! the silence lightning actually looked realistic rather than what it looked like last time.

Also: DARK TARDIS FROM THE LODGER IS BACK!!!
Exactly! I sense some cross series maniplation!

He had invited them to America and they were catching up.

Quick thread is quick!
I have them prepared on my iPad beforehand. I did the same last year for series 5 ;)
How is your iPad anyways?

OT: OHHEMMGEEE!!!!1!!one!
Budget totaly well spent on going to America and filming this.
Also the ex-FBI guy is really good as he was in Battlestar Galactia.
Anyone who was in Battlestar Galatica is automatically good as an actor in my mind. :p
*has never seen Battlestar Galactica*
But he was still a great actor!

iPad is good by the way ;)
Oh, he was an awesome skitzo lawyer character! With an imaginary cat! :D
Also I found a continuity error!
On the space suit there are two patches

Rant over? I hope it doesn't continue further along the thread.
Anyway I thought it was great. As an aside, when the alien opened it's mouth looked hilarious!

It was ok for the most part. Although I had a few gripes.

The silence or whatever they are, are just the weeping angels but with memory wipes. Bit of a lazy idea just to make them creepy. Also a bit to much like 'the Gentlemen' from Buffy.

The new fad of the Doctor interfering in his own timeline is always irritating and something DW fans know he cannot do. River Song is also becoming like the TV show Lost, a character whom they haven't written a reasonable ending or explanation for yet but keep dragging out until they do.

Matt Smith was watchable as always but for an opener to a second series it could've been alot better.

Those aliens really reminded me of the Ood, for some reason... appearance-wise anyway. Not really sure why they're dressed up as government agents. Also, one scene that bugged me was in the toilets / washroom, wouldn't the guard outside have heard all that lightning and noise going off in the ladies' toilets when that woman was killed?

Aside from that, it was alright, your typical in medias res beginning to nearly every new Doctor Who season that may or may not get tied up in part two. I've come to expect convoluted plots anyway, especially the finale involving Rory the Roman. The River Song plotline / character is still as confusing as ever, i'm not even sure who she is in relation to the story, how she even knows the Doctor and why she's so important and has that diary thing. All i remember is that Library episode. (though none too well, i will admit)

So it wasn't sad when River was going on about how she'll die when Doctor doesn't know her? Although, the aliens seemed to be like Reverse Angels. They only didstuff when people looked at them.

Edit: Little girl in the spacesuit = Amys Child. We'll see!

Now that's a spoiler. XD

OT: It was a good episode. I also hate the fact it's a fucking cliffhanger. I haaaaaaaaaaaate cliffhangers.
But yeah, it was pretty much what I expected.

And also, dear The Sun. Fuck you for spoiling the first ten minutes, you bastards. :(

While I may not hate it that much, I also didn't think it was a very good episode. There were some really great individual moments such as the codenames, Rivers worse day (made even worse by the fact we've seen it), the Ship from "The Lodger" and Mark Sheppard [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0791968/] (who is awesome in absolutely everything he's in) they wern't enough to save it. I think the biggest problem was the pacing. It felt like it was trying to set too much up either for later in the series or just for part two and so doesn't work on its own.

What I'll probably do is next week watch it again just before part 2 to see whether watching both together improves it.

Edit: To avoid double posting, I just want to give my support to River Song as it seems like I'm the only one here who likes her. As a character idea she's something new and she has some really decent chemistry with Matt Smith.

Also, who saw the fourth wall breaking!

First was the Doctor saying that all the really cool stuff happens on a SATURDAY and second was Rory commenting on the reason why the Doctor was able to interfere with his own timeline last time. "The universe did explode"

You do realise that the episodes in between the mid series break are a 2 parter right? Massive 3 month cliffhanger ;)

I wouldn't have thought the second point was 4th wall breaking. It happened within the show.

Wait, what? Of course they've written River Song's ending; it was in 'Silence In The Library'. That's the interesting thing about her; we already know that she's going to die, and when.

I might have been if they didn't get so blatant about 'something bad is going to happen OMG!'

When Eccleston died it was understated, when Tenant died it was an emotional punch to the gut, even when Tenant had the fake out regen it was shocking because it came completely out of left field.

Smith brooding for ten minutes, going from not-even-properly-happy to manically depressed in a heartbeat, telling the Astronaut 'it's okay', the musical cue being so blatant I wanted to punch whoever was composing it? They couldn't have telegraphed anymore that something big and different was about to happen, and since the crew admitted that Matt Smith would have a regeneration scene, I knew fully in advance that the regeneration would be halted, because I knew it would be the 'shocking' thing to do.

If Moffat had really wanted to write a 'shocking' scene that was a subversion of all our expectations, the should have had the Doctor come away from his encounter completely unscathed, and go through the whole of the episode without even having come close to danger, then kill him halfway through the second episode, and have it seem at the time to be completely pointless and meaningless, instead of putting up big neon signs that 'THIS SCENE WILL BE SIGNIFICANT' right at the beginning. The only reason for telegraphing a scene so obviously should be to subvert it, not play it straight.

My ire comes mostly over Moffat actually. He was so good at subverting expectations (remember The Doctor Dances? No one saw that ending coming) and now it's his second season and already he's falling into such cliched, hackneyed tropes and conventions. Like I said, there was nothing new, the fact that I could call every moment of that episode with perfect timing ruined the entire experience for me.

Nope. It was sad when River died back in 'The Library'. Possibly this is just my bias, I hate River Song because she represents exactly the worst way to write a character. We accept that characters like Donna, Rose, Martha (any companion really) can be awesome because we've seen the process of making them awesome. We watched Rose go from terrified girl to confident young woman, we saw Donna go from airhead to Time-Lord head. River is introducing a character like scaled up Rose or Donna, but with none of the backstory, so there is literally nothing to emphathise with. She probably has a deep and engaging backstory full of trauma, but we haven't seen any of it, so personally I don't care about her at all. Second, having a character who we know the last time she saw the Doctor removes almost any fear of things not working out, because unless Moffat completely throws out all established canon, then River has until she has filled her entire diary before she leaves, and as has been established she's not even halfway through yet. and if Moffat did throw out the canon, that would be the breaking point for me.

I took it as the production team taking a potshot at all the Fans who complained about the Timeline crossing in the final episodes last series, but that might just be me.
