Wait...if they 'kill' him in this episode, they didn't need to retcon the limit of 13 regenerations :/
How'd you work that one out?
He's dead on the 13th regen.
Now his immortality is kinda pointless :p

Yea... But I don't think he will stay dead. They will probably save him somehow.

While I agree with you completely, its something that I think just needs to be overlooked as I don't think a lot of people (especially the target audience of kids and parents) would pick up on it. People with a more casual attitude towards film/TV only really notice these tropes when pointed out in retrospect so it probably was a shock for most people. I was also tempted to bring up the double subversion arguement but I couldn't make myself believe it.
snip.
It's not the fact that he died. Everyone knew he would come back. It's how they brought him back, that it was a future version of the current Doctor and our Doctor just walked through the door while they are mourning him.
I'm gonna come back to my 'cliche' stamp again. River holds up the fourth envelope 'Who would the Doctor trust more than anyone in the whole world?'

I can't have been the only one rolling my eyes and asking "So is the Doctor going to be waiting outside or will he just walk through the door?" It had no emotional impact at all. Also, see previous points about how the permanent death of the Doctor will never ever happen, thus there is no tension from that moment, which makes the overwrought characters seem like a cynical attempt to tug our heartstrings instead of genuine tugging like Tenant's exit.

TVTropes calls it 'Like You Really Would.' And the moment that the episode opened with something that fit the mold of that trope perfectly, it pretty much sets the tone of the whole proceedings.
Maybe. But you are forgetting one thing. The Doctor is still dead. The 1103 Doctor. Still very shot.

Perhaps for the best that you don't know.

it's not... conducive to sanity retention.

Kinda dissapointing tbh, its all built up and left with a weeks wait for the interesting stuff to happen.

Not saying it was bad, just cliffhangers are the shittest thing ever to do on a first episode of the series.

For those who don't know, the new monsters are based off the Scream painting
except of course, in-universe, the scream painting is based on the silence...
These fact are cool.
Thanks for sharing! ^^

Wow, what an episode. A fantastic start to a new series, and my goodness they better answer all the questions they've set up in this opening episode along not counting left over questions we had from last year...

Man, those new monsters are freaky looking. It's like Sycarax crossed with the usual depiction of LGMs... *shudders* Moffet really has a thing about looking at monsters hasn't he...

Awaiting next week!

Means nothing.

Doctor Who will not end while the BBC can squeeze money out of it. Matt Smith will at some point want to leave, and he will be replaced by a new actor. Thus the scene of MS dying on a beach will have to be retconned out. Stephen Moffat won't have control over this decision I should add. He will have been told that Matt Smith's Doctor cannot die permanently.

Yes it's looking at the meta-show rather than the story itself, but that's just the point, the meta-show has affected the story before and the writers have been skilled enough to work around it, this time there is literally no tension because Matt Smith's Doctor will not be the final Doctor.

Loved the episode, it somehow managed to be both more dark and more light-hearted at the same time. Don't ask me how.

You can, but... you'll regret asking.

Right, before you watch this video, I'm giving you a choice; this or sleep. Decide which you'd prefer before you press "play".

I personally think you are thinking about this too much. Although it crossed my mind that they will repair it so Smith doesn't die. I'm not letting it ruin the show for me because it's obvious that there will be an actor after Smith so long as there is money.

You do realise SM wrote the story right? So I would have thought it had crossed his mind that he couldn't have the Doctor killed without rectifying it.

Hello sweetie! Brilliant! Can't wait for next week! I saw the fake TARDIS from the lodger and James Corden is back in the show in Autumn with cybermats!

"They're American!"
"Oh my God, don't shoot!"
That made me laugh!

Also, I was thinking that the Doctor's death happened 200 years ago in his timeline so the writers can stretch it out as long as they want. So I was thinking that this might be a setup for the 50th anniversery (23rd November 2013). Probably a load of bullshit but still...

Euargh... hargh...

Wait... wasn't David 10?
That would make him 11.
Unless you count the Deus Ex Machina regeneration with the hand, in which case he's the "12" incarnation with ten having happened twice (thus 10/11). There would still, however, be one doctor left yeah? One regeneration?

Unless I've missed something....

I love how people are already complaining about the continuity of Matt Smith's Doctor being the one who's shot despite the story not being over yet. Sure, I doubt Smith will continue playing the Doctor for the next 200 years (of real time) but give the writers a chance! If the story ends with errors in continuity and meta story then sure, review-nuke it; Sci-Fi stories are held to pretty high standards in this regard.

But do wait until the story's been told first.

This one was freaky. Couldn't predict where the episode was gonna go which is a good thing. Still a bit confused about the future and present Doctor thing which is weird since it happened in episode 5.13. Looking forward to seeing where it goes though.

Only complaint - why was Amy telling the Doctor she was pregnant such a big deal? And if she remembered she had to tell him something (this something being about the Silence), why didn't she remember she had the photo on her phone?

Yeah, I gotta say, this is a much darker direction for DW. I know it was said beforehand it would be, but I never expected anything like this.

Yeah, I'm interested enough to keep watching. I think the series has suffered since Russell T Davies left, but . . . I'll reserve final judgement till it's finished.

That's my guess. Might stop her being pregnant for the rest of the series?

Wonder how many times she'll become pregnant before the series is out - There was that episode in the last series with The Dreamlord.
