Does anybody else miss Cheat Codes?

As much as I've enjoyed this generation of games I can't help but feel kind of let down because of the lack of cheat codes. Some games like GTA and Saint's Row still have them but I would love nothing more than to go through Halo Reach with an unlimited-ammo-Sniper-Rifle and, Magnum (I know I can do this in firefight but it's just not the same to me). I also don't see why Big-Head mode couldn't have been incorporated into Dragon Age or, squeaky voices/ deep voices for Mass Effect. Or a mode in which the citizens of Italy went on rampages, hunting and, beating and, killing each other in Assassins Creed 2 (like the crazy pedestrian cheat from GTA)

Some games, like I said, still have cheats but using them disables achievements which really isn't much of a deterrent but it's still somewhat annoying. I mean even if you do go through Halo 3 on Legendary and, invincible you won't feel half as accomplished as you would if you had gone the normal route.

So does anyone else miss Cheat Codes? I guess this is mainly aimed at console gamers since PC games always seem to have entire communities of people who modify games and whatnot >.>

The game that lost the most out of taking out any good cheat codes was GTA. Vice City and San Andreas had the most entertaining cheats out of them ALL, and I could literally play for hours. GTA 4 was an enormous disappointment in that regard.

It because of achievements/trophies mostly that they don't include them anymore, and yes I do miss them.

Cheat codes was nice back when you played multi player games in single player games, like age of empires. However now a days all the games you would use cheat codes on has gone interwebs multiplayer and thus cheat codes are no longer needed. Also for me there is no longer any reason to use cheat codes in single player games I do play since they are all RPG and you're pretty pathetic if you cheat in an RPG just saying, also as you get older you realize cheat codes are wasting your time since your cheating yourself out of the game.

Some games disable achievements and trophies awarded when cheat codes are enabled. Nowdays, many games run off an engine and rely on commands for cheats. I do miss simple godmode and give all cheats when I only want the story without the hassle of leveling up or getting equiped.

I have to agree here. I was severely disappointed that GTA IV didn't have the usual amount of silly achievements that made games like San Andreas so fun.

Yes: instead of paintball, bigheaded, insane crowd mode I get 5gs or a bronze trophy for beating level one. Not all trophies are terrible but most of them aren't worth the cost of those wacky, wacky cheats.

Oh gosh, yes. I miss the days where you could sit with a cheat book on your lap, tap out a code and boom! Jetpack. I like the way GTA IV dealt with it, even if the amount and quality of cheat codes were vastly reduced. If you input a cheat code (on the PS3 anyway, not sure about Xbox), it would simply disable your ability to gain trophies. And I'm okay with that. I wouldn't care if trophies or achievements were disabled just because I entered a squeaky voice code in Mass Effect 2, because it would be entirely worth it just to hear Mordin do his Gilbert and Sullivan as though on helium :)

See, I think gaming lost a lot by sacrificing cheat codes entirely because of achievements. No doubt most people will know at least one code off by heart (for me it's the GTA:SA jetpack code) and people only really use those codes for crazy fun. I have a lot of fond, cheat code related gaming memories. So yes, I really miss them.

Not really. Cheating just takes all the fun and challenge out of a game.

Its like in a certain space sim i play on and off. I can download a cheat mod and have whatever i want right away but that just takes all the challenge and satisfaction out of it.

Comparing cheating and not cheating is kind of like comparing Garrys Mod and Minecraft as sandbox games.

I also miss "god" cheats, it's fun to have unlimited healt/bullets sometimes!

Yea, I miss em, it was fun to go and mess around with games and just do crazy stuff after you beat it. Hell, I loved just going through Goldeneye with Paintball or DK mode on. Good times were had.

Cheats were fun when they FUCKING WORKED PROPERLY. Sorry, I actually just got done trying to enter a cheat to an old, apparently non-receptive game. The cellphone system in Saint's Row 2 (which, mind, had none of that trophy bullshit in the PS3 version) was pretty good; "It worked" or "it didn't work."

What I hate most are the games that have cheats, but won't let you save if you activate the more useful ones, even make you earn them first.
"Oh, but if you cheat you're missing TEH CHALLENJ!" Maybe I don't give a damn about your "challenge," maybe I stopped enjoying the game an hour ago and would rather strap a magic propeller to my head and charge through the overpowered enemies, near-invincible bosses, insta-kill traps, and frustrating timers to get back to having fun, fourth wall-breaking, ill-gained fun, like ripping through the streets in a scooter knocking Ultor mini-tanks off the road.

Then again, cheats are probably born of glitches anyway (see falling pedestrian cheat in Saint's Row 2) and most likely take a lot of extra time and effort that apparently needs to be spent making everything look as "realistic" as possible and developing "DLC" that'll be done before the game is released. I guess there just isn't time for cheats anymore.

I miss cheats because you could go beyond what the game was intended to do. I like when games included cheats as an unlockable feature.

I only miss the ridiculous cheat codes that make your character look like a gorilla or jump a thousand feet into the sky. I don't miss the ones that give you godmode.

I don't miss cheat codes very much, I prefer secrets and hidden items to being able to cheat my way through a game.
