You guys have probably seen them lurking under the piles of 80% discount game. "Rio: the Game!" "Thor: the Game!" or "Eragon: the Game!" (<--- terrible memories of this one here.)
I'm wondering who actually buys these games :/ Do they even make a profit?

Personally, I have played a few back before the PS3 was invented and the only one I liked was the one based off the third Harry Potter book (Open world + get to fly a hippogriff anytime-ish = badass.)

i really liked lord of the rings return of the king and peter jackson's king kong, they are probably the only two i've ever played that are worth shit. i mostly don't pay attention to movie games anymore.

I once owned a copy of "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" Film-Videogame.
It wasn't THAT bad. It was slightly above mediocre. Well, hold on now that I am considering that it was published by EA it was amazingly good, a true masterpiece, one of the best games "EVAAAAA" you catch my drift.

Anyway it had nice roleplay elements in it and it featured the cast of the film pomposly and delusionally talking about their character.

I think those games just make up perfect "gifts" for those uninformed aunts, mothers and grandmothers. They just recall you liked the film and thus they probably think you will like the game, too.

The Lego tie-ins are great & the only other good one i can think of is The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. Never played Dark Athena so i can't say about that one.

People don't like most of them which is probably why they don't make them for every single movie anymore.
Before this generation, they would make a game for everything. Remember that crappy Titanic game or how about that awful American Pie game?

That said, I too liked a couple of the Harry Potter ones - they actually put some effort into those. They could've been better, but they are impressive when you consider the deadline issue.

Goldeneye (original) is just about only really good exception. Lord of the Rings were fun at the time. At a strech you could include the latest Prince of Persia game? Also although I've never played more than the demo of it, wasn't the Wolverine game meant to be decent, especially compared to the film? Also similarly Car 2's game was meant to be a fun Mario Kart style thing for kids, but again, never played it.

I think they do make a profit, otherwise people wouldn't make them, its all gifts/for young children. Don't think most older gamers get them for themself.

I owned one of the Harry Potter games for the original Xbox, think it was the second one.
Other then that, got Avatar the game for a gift once.
Unless I were to see a lot of good reviews for on, I wouldn't just buy one.

I play the lego tie-in games. I have also honestly considered getting many tie-in games out of genuine interest. Examples would be the Legend of the Guardians, Thor, Toy Story 3.

You have terrible memories of a cup of hot cocoa with a heart in it???

OT: Yeah, in general they suck, but there are four I enjoy.

King Kong. This was a legitimately good game! It has great graphics, fun survival style gameplay and lot's of romping and stomping as Kong.

Iron Man. This one is a MAJOR guilty pleasure, but I have tons of fun every time I play it. It has an epic scope and really pulls off the one man army concept.

Eragon. Iron Man is my guilty pleasure. Eragon The Game is the one I want to strangle myself for having fun with. The book wasn't that great, the movie was complete garbage and the game has gotten no higher than a 4. Now keep in mind I never played it single player, but I had a ball playing co-op with a buddy of mine hacking and slashing everything in sight.

Avatar. I LOATHE the movie, but since the game allows you to play as the humans and run around in a giant mech suit blasting primitive natives with a 30mm machine gun, this one gets a pass.

Other than that, I pretty much hate movie tie-in games.

The last movie tie-in game that I bought (not including the LEGO games) was Spiderman 2. And what a fantastic game it was.

I thought the Lord of the Rings Return of the King was good, and Spider Man 2 and King Kong were brilliant. I probably played some others that were forgettable. Then I played Spider Man 3 and Transformers almost back to back, and after those, I never played another game based on a movie. To this day, Transformers is still one of the worst games I have ever played.

Oh, and the Godfather was an enjoyable one. And Revenge of the Sith was playable too.

I recently rented that new Captain America game and it was actually pretty good, but I think that was more due to the fact that it ripped off Arkham Asylum, which was a very good game.

Toy Story 2. Back in the day of the PS1, but Jesus Christ....best game based off a movie. Each level was pretty open world and rather large with collectables and random missions. The only problem is that it suffers from old, old game syndrome.

Another good one I remember were the first two Spiderman games. At least for console. Spiderman 1 were the same on both platforms. But 2 on console was a massive open world adventure. PC, it was a technical broken piece of linear crap. And entirely different for some reason. Never played 3 though.

And somewhat Wolverine. First time I've ever ever seen him use his abilities with real violent effect. I finally get to see my claws rip someone's intestines out!

I have two.

Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands is much better than the movie it was released with. Maybe because they have almost nothing in common but whatever. It's not as good as the real Sands of time trilogy but it's about as close as you'll get. Worth a rental at least.

X-men Origins Wolverine is a surprisingly fun brawler but it can get a bit repetitive at times. But any game that lets you leap off a cliff directly at a helicopter, decapitate the pilot on the blades, and leap to safety Is just plain fun. Besides if nothing else it has something I've never seen any other game do (that i can remember at least). When Wolverine is injured his body is wounded, long gashes and chunks of flesh being removed. As the regenerating health kicks in you can actually watch this damage healing itself, leaving Wolverine looking perfectly healthy.
