Does Deus Ex: Human Revolution get better?

Or it is just a game not for me like I had thought to begin with. You see, it had never looked like a game I would like to play and so I generally avoid those types of games and don't play them, much less buy them and give them my money.

But I had some people seriously harass me about this and told me I just had to play it. Even though they've heard me tell them a thousand times I had macho main characters, first person shooting, grimdark, and the like. But they kept calling me all sorts of nasty names and saying the roleplaying is so wonderful and if I love care about gameplay in video games at all you will play it and think it is the greatest thing ever. And if you don't play it you should be embarrassed to call yourself a gamer and the like.

So I eventually got fed of and decided to give it a try so I could at least review it. And I wish I could get all the time I wasted playing it back. I feel embarrassed for making myself play it. It's just like it looks on the cover, it stars some annoying macho dude who I cannot relate to in the slightest and just want to see die he and his machoness get on my nerves so much. I swear I just want to shave his stupid facial hair off. Modify all the psuedo-muscles off of him, remove those stupid shades, and pump him full of estrogen so he doesn't make me want to kill him all of the time. Because he seriously gets on my nerves. And this wouldn't fix things, but it would be better. I mean, I just hate Adam.

So then maybe I can ignore that for a second in gameplay somehow by talking to interesting people? Nope. Of course, being in first person perspective means I don't have to stare at macho Adam all of the time. The only thing worse than having to stare at a macho guy all day. Is first person perspective. I never enjoyed first person perspective, it's obnoxious to me and makes all games nigh unplayable. And I'm becoming tired of how common it is.

But hey, maybe I can talk to some interesting people? Like I said. But no, the only person I have come across somewhat fun to talk to is that lady who flies the helicopter who I've forgotten the name of. Talking to her has literally the most fun thing I've encountered in this entirely loatheful experience so far.

Furthermore, the first person shooting is even bad, it's horrible. I mean, you can get shot over a dozen times, and live through it. But if you jump over a dozen feet, you die. It's obnoxious even for a first person mechanic. And nothing is more obnoxious than first person gameplay.

And what of the roleplaying? Having 3 choices every few conversations between cutscenes in a boring grimdark world isn't exactly my idea of fun roleplaying.

Does this game get better? Because I feel like I can't take another minute of this unless you paid me. Maybe it's just not for me. Of course I stated that to begin with and nobody accepted that. I think people need to realize some people have different tastes instead of ignoring them and recommending things you'll hate. People should not accept no for an answer just because they hate other people's taste. Because I would have had more fun watching the Room.

You sound mad at the game.

It seems to have every element that makes a game unappealing to you. If you're this mad and you're basically forcing yourself through it, I wouldn't hope for much more.

I like the game a lot, but your tastes are different from my own obviously. I'm not exactly sure what counts as "better" to you, but if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't play it more. It just doesn't seem to be your kind of game, at all, not even close.

I'm more speaking through my irritation at people who know me and what I like recommending me things so forcefully that they should know I wouldn't like.

I guess some people just ignore that some people have different taste because it doesn't coincide with the taste they want to spread, and will recommend whatever they like anyway.

Sounds like you're just trying to hate it. I'd stop if I were you.
Maybe you should give it to me instead!

That's too bad. Hell I barely know you and even I could tell that Deus Ex: HR is not your kind of game, and wouldn't recommend it beyond something like "Well, I think it's pretty good."

I used to know people like that. For some reason, in the case of videogame culture especially, some just seem to be mentally and emotionally unable to comprehend that someone out there does not like the same game they do.
Thankfully it's not something I have to deal with so much anymore.

Back to the game though, it's just not a game you enjoy for a lot of valid reasons. I think it's time to tell your acquaintances something like "I told you so. Fuck this game."

It sounds like you've gone into this game having already decided you'll hate it, and therefore you're hating it. I've had that mindset myself before and it's never ended well for me.

My advice would be to put it down, spend a week or so doing something else, then come back with a level head and try again.

There's a lot to like in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and you're not going to find it if you spend the whole time fixating how much you hate Adams facial hair. Is it a perfect game? No. Does it have foibles? Sure - Jensen sounds like he's doing Christian Bale's stupid Batman voice all the dang time. But a few small foibles dont magically turn a good game into the worst game evar.

There's an enjoyable experience on that disc, if you're willing to give it a chance and let yourself have some fun.

You're sounding just like them, Leodiensian. Well, not just like. You're not calling me names and belittling me.

But people do sometimes just have different tastes. If you think there's an enjoyable experience there, tell me what it is instead of telling me it'll appear if I give it a one week break.

does seem a little bit of trolling to this, but I choose to take it at face value.

No lilith, it does not get any better, well in that the style and gameplay does not change as you go along. Guess you probably shouldn't have bowed to peer pressure and played it anyway.

just out of curiousity, what sort of games do you like?

Gosh, do you think?

I mean, there's two possibilities here. Either everyone who gave the game a positive review, both critics and laymen, are delusional, and you and you alone have managed to cut right to the heart of why it's a piece of shit, or...

You didn't like a single one of the game play elements it employed going in, and thus knew you were going to hate it, and...surprise...you hated it, and sometimes we hate things that are pretty good, because our own personal tastes and biases blind us to their merits.

Which do you think is more likely?

First of all, anyone harassing someone to try a game is a surefire way to make sure that person hates it, I read an article in Wired a couple weeks back about the joy of discovering things for yourselves. Since it's so easy to be influenced by other peoples opinions I find it becomes easier to write a game off before even trying it. Not your fault it happens.

I enjoyed the 'grim dark' world personally but I've always been biased toward the cyberpunk. I had the most fun sneaking around and hacking everything in sight, the whole point of Deus Ex is to play Adam how you want to play him, not into mindlessly blasting foes? sneak around them. Tired of sneaking around guards? throw a fridge at their heads.

Fun is very subjective, what I found fun you might hate and what you might enjoy I might hate.

Then there is this whole idea that every game is either good or bad which I never understood. Since when has it been decided that every self respecting gamer should love Bioshock and hate Duke Nukem? Heck in a couple years we might actually start seeing people who don't care for Mario.

This doesn't happen in any other medium, I've never been told I can't call myself a fan of films unless I like citizen kane. It's silly and outdated, if you like a game play it if you don't then don't play it. Anyone who puts you down for what games you like or don't like needs to think strongly about what games/movies/music THEY like or don't like.

Well, I agree with that for the most part. Though I do think a lot of reviewing is subjective. Some of how good a game is can be measured subjectively. But a lot of things come down to personal preference and cultural differences.

I've played games that were reviewed quite poorly that I thought were great games and thoroughly enjoyed. I don't put much stock in ratings to begin with.

I suppose the game might be good at... whatever it's supposed to do, though. I couldn't really tell because it's not my kind of game.

Eh, I'd just drop the game if I were you. You seem to have made up your mind to hate it. Heck, having an emotion as strong as hate for a game is reason enough to just blot it out of your memory. I loved Deus Ex HR, but I've never hated any game, ever. I've gotten bored, disappointed, etc, but you seem genuinely angry.

Honestly? Something can be fantastic and still be hated. Personal preference is just that. I loved DXHR, I found the world incredibly absorbing and for some reason nostalgic and familiar, I loved the underlying story about invisible forces battling each other for control of society, I found Jensen to be a strong, flawed character - think about it, the guy was shot and had his arms and legs chopped off and replaced with cyber prosthetics, he has every right to be moody and sullen - and I loved that they managed to pull that off while also allowing you to play your own style. In fact, I loved the way that most of the characters in the game were well rounded, realistic characters as opposed to the caricatures you see in most games. Yes, the game itself has it's flaws - it can seem a little overwhelming at first with all the options open to you, and there are a few points that are obnoxiously difficult or just plain boring - but overall it left me with a very favourable impression.

But here's the thing: that's MY opinion... It happens to tie in with what most people have been saying about the game, but it's not influenced by what they're saying about the game. I've found that the biggest turn-off to things like this for me is other people hyping it up, and I've avoided things I've later come to love simply because friends wouldn't stop bloody banging on about them (bands mostly, but books and games too). Some people are just hard-wired that way, but we all love when other people agree with our opinions...

Just don't play it is my advice. Remember though that just because you dislike something doesn't make it 'bad', just 'not your type of thing'. I can't stand rap music but I can appreciate why it exists and that some of it is actually quite deep and interesting... It's just not my style of thing. For example, I can't stand the Call of Duty franchise; the gritty, hyper-realistic approach just turns me off those games so much because I don't find it fun - I appreciated the wacky approach that games like Timesplitters, the original Duke Nukem and Serious Sam took to FPS more - but with so many people loving it COD must be doing something right, mustn't it? I can appreciate that it's very well made, and that the multiplayer is well balanced, and that the story in MW1 was deep etc but they just don't interest me.

Don't play it, and don't let the morons who think their opinion is the basis for fact get you down. Everything is subjective, after all :)

Sell the game! If your a couple hours into it and your not enjoying it then don't play it. The first couple areas are a perfect example of how the next 20-30 hours of the game will play.

So for you, this game will not get any better.

I've got a funny image in my head of Pinkie Pie trying to play Human Revolution and getting all confused by it.

Well...you said it's not your type of game. I think it's a fantastic game, but people's tastes can be very different. Don't be so easily swayed, or at least wait until you can find a game really cheap if you're not sure you'll like it.

Having read your post and afew of your replies im just gonna go out on a limb here and say that you've already made up your mind about the game and for you personaly it will never get any better. Alot of other people are going to disagree with your naturaly this is the way of almost everything and a difference of opinion is what makes socicity truly great, my advice is next time you come accross a title that you have reservations about, even if its highly reccomended by your friends dont just buy it because of peer pressure or whatever, do some research, watch some videos, play a demo if at all possible but dont waste your money untill your certain you want to.
