WELL that's quite INTERESTING. Perhaps IF you take THIS into account, HD doesn't really make MUCH of a DIFFERENCE.
I agree WITH Vanguard_Ex's statement. I have never really THOUGHT that HD made THAT much of a difference either. I actually PLAY my PlaySTATION in STANDARD definition as I FIND that HIGH DEFINITION is a RATHER expensive type of TELEVISION to BUY.
THANK you. It's NICE to see SOME recognition for POSTS.
William Shatner, why did you make two accounts?

Wait . . . did you actually switch resolution or did you just switch the cables? Component video cables are perfectly capable of carrying HD signals all the way up to 1080p. Depending on the TV, component sometimes looks better than HDMI.

When I switched from SCART to HDMI, I came... nuff said o.o.

There is a huge fucking difference, anyone who says otherwise, clearly doesn't have an HDMI cable inserted from the eyes to the brain.

I didn't know 360's could output to 1080i... anyways, there is a difference in that objects appear sharper than there SD counterparts. Other than that, that's all I've noticed (oh and things are shinier).

If you don't spot the graphics difference between a PS2 on component and a 360 on HDMI, then you:
1. Need glasses and/or get your head checked.
2. Need a better TV.
3. Do see a difference but like starting POINTLESS threads ON a GAMING forum.

Yeah if you cant appreciate the difference between running on 1080 or 480 or 720 enjoy your crappy gaming.

HD does not improve the graphics it just make the image resolution sharper.

As well.. not all TVs are capable of 1080p, smaller screens 40 inch or less usually dont include 1080p since it will have no effect.

I noticed immediately the difference between HDMI 1080p and component on the same screen. The difference is actually quite massive. Everything looks way sharper and smoother, especially the text.

There is a drastic difference. It certainly doesn't look the same.
That's because most 360 games run at 600p or 640p(depends on the game) and wii games don't go over 480p.

gameplay over graphics, the only reason I bough an HDMI cable and a three thousand dollar HD TV was because i watch blu ray, and am a slight graphics whore...also because my mother is a HUGE graphics whore (she ridicules me for playing MGS1 because it has bad graphics). also, if you can't see the difference, you need a better TV or you got ripped off for that HDMI cable, either way, after playing killzone 2 at 1080i, switching to my friends TV, (just an SDTV) rendered me useless, to the point where i just picked up my stuff and went home

I notice not much of a difference, but I prefer standard Def to HD... just the way HD looks... it looks like shit and not to mention I don't feel like paying 1300-2000$ Canadian for it... that and I sit like 5 Ft. from my 18" Standard Def... so HD widescreen would blind me. but yah, HD sucks in my opinion

I see what you did there.

I can really only see the difference in HD on sports channels.

Now THAT is funny.

You never hear anyone mentioning how many "bits" a game console can produce anymore, but I'm not sure if its because of what HD has done or if people generally aren't taken to care about that.?
That would mostly be because the -bit branding was a marketing gimmick, similar to HD. Higher numbers denote higher quality simply by its label, although there were titles on the 16-bit Sega Genesis that would run just as well on the 8-bit NES, same with the N64 and the 32-bit Playstation 1 (the bigger difference there being the N64's 3D processing vs the PS's full motion video - not a damn thing to do with bits.)

Same with definition, HD is inherently better quality than SD just because it is labeled such. What you see is more pixels on screen rendering the picture in sharper detail. Graphically you are presented the same picture, but with finer lines and more colors.

Sort of like capitalized text. I could say the same sentence twice. I could ALSO say the SAME sentence TWICE. The difference is one communicates more specific emphasis than the other.

CY_Definitive, what is the make and model of your TV? What games did you use to test?

I'm pretty sure you are being bitten by at least two false assumptions / expectations, but still, 1080i output to a HD-ready TV should definitely look different than 480i.

I remember my older brother complaining about this over the phone last year...then I told him to go to his setup menu in the dashboard and change his output to the 1080...and so he did, and feeling like a moron when everything suddenly looked like he was hoping it would in the first place.

You do know that all of the PS3/360 games only run at 720p, right? Sure the dashboard/menus and even movies will play at 1080, but games won't.
Both systems have native 1080p games. The problem, though, is that only some of the 360's games are actually native. Others are just upscaled. All PS3 games labeled as 1080p are in their native resolution.

http://www.makeyougohmm.com/xbox360-1080p-games/

Note that all of the games on the PS3 list are native 1080p while only the top six on the 360 are native 1080p, the rest just upscale to 1080p.

It would be correct to say that most games are 720p between the two platforms.

It looks the same. Honestly. I can see how HD works for TV and movies, but video gaming? Really?
I'm sorry, but are you blind? One time I accidentally set Killzone 2 to 480p and I thought I'd plugged my PS2 in. Jumping to 720 or 1080 really makes a difference.
Maybe you're confusing this with the component<->HDMI issue. They're both pretty much the same, except HDMI has a single cable that does all the easy work for ya.
Oh, and about GT4, it's not gonna change much since it's a PS2. In fact, the PS2 will look BETTER on your old tube TV than in one of those big-arse LCDs out there! In fact, I kept my tube TV just to play PS2 and the occasional Wii game that looks like ass on my LCD.

Funny this topic should come up, over the passed few days I've been house sitting for a friend who has a 40" HD spangly plasma thingamajig and an XBox 360.

Now there must have been a placebo effect on him because he'd been jumping for joy at how great his HD is but while playing Gears of War 2 I decided it didn't look as good as it does on my 22" monitor at home. So I investigated, needless to say all this time he had his cable set to TV not HDTV and the settings were on the standard 480 or whatever value it is.

So, the visual difference was not good enough for my friend to tell between HD and normal, but it was big enough for me to tell the difference between my 22" monitor on HD and his 40" TV on normal.

Read in to that what you will.
