Played violin as an eleven year-old, and could probably play "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" if I have to.
Other than that, hmmm...does really bad and completely unprofessional beatbox done for funsies count?

I currently don't. I do own a rather nice blue electric guitar though, and I'd love to learn to play. Yet another thing I'll do when I break this internet addiction.

Currently, I play the piano, but I'd like to take up the guitar.
I have a guitar in the other room that's pretty nice.

The Escapist unfortunately doesn't play an instrument. The LCD status panels on the servers do recite Who's On First [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sShMA85pv8M] though.

A long time ago, I played the trombone. Now I only play the fake plastic guitar. \m/

Guitar for 4 and a half years, and I used to be a grade 4 flute player. I can also play piano to a decent level, and a TINY bit of drums :)

I play baritone! :D
Don't you mean you sing baritone?
Or did you mean you play baritone sax? Or baritone guitar?

Me, I play the guitar well enough to be good entertainment at parties and social gatherings, and I love playing Classical pieces and some of Puccini's arias on the piano.

Hey, sorry I'm late!

I play bass, studying popular music and performance and I play in a funk/R&B band (should get some songs up soon).

Few questions for my fellow musicians here (in order to get some discussion, rather then listing how awesome you are)

Theory? Yay or Nay?

What do you all think? I've heard so many arguments about this (mainly at uni). Personally I think theory is important to have, especially if you plan on taking Music seriously. Without theory I believe you are limited in what you can do, it makes it so much harder to play with other musicians, its harder to write songs and its harder to understand them. I'm not saying you can't enjoy music without theory and I'm not saying you can't play music with theory, I just think it makes everything run smoother.

To my fellow Bass Players

How do you approach writing lines to a new song?

This year at uni has been pretty tough because they pretty much told us "Okay, you have 8 weeks till your gig, write 7 songs" and I haven't had a lot of experience doing this (all my other bands have just done covers). It took me awhile but I think I have finally found a solid way to look at it. As a bass player do you try to support the drums or the guitar, do you look to be felt rather then heard and do you like complex stuff or simple, laid back lines?

Also.. what the shit is with all the pointy basses on this pages?? Not cool.
Thoery is deffinitely important if you want to play in a band, it also makes it much easier to learn new instruments and play peices on them. And while I think it's important, I also think it's incredibly boring = |.
Indeed, theory is very very important if you want to be able to evolve as a musician. I don't find it boring at all, actually, I love learning theory. It's a pity how many guitarists don't know how to write a song because they've never heard of I-V-IV, for instance, or how many drummers completely lose their tempo when playing anything other than 4/4, or how many singers could really use a bit of training. I used to be in a band, but left because the members were not only completely clueless about theory, they dismissed and thought it was for pussies who couldn't shred. Yet when I told him that his key was way off and that he should be playing one perfect fifth higher, he was completely dumbfounded. I quit right there, along with the keyboardist (who had been trained clasically in piano).

It depends how far you can stretch the word play. I am learning guitar as of right now, so technically yes, I do play an instrument. Technically. -a distant strumming plunk plunk can be heard-

Plaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
-intake of breath-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

I'll stop there. I'm not even all that funny.

I sing, and can get ridiculously low. Like, 'bottom of the piano' low. Also, may be learning guitar from September, depending on my GCSEs.

I used to play the flugelhorn for seven years. In case you don't know what a flugelhorn is (and you won't, unless you have any interest in marching bands or something), it's essentially a trumpet. Only it looks different.
It plays the same, it sounds the same, it pretty much is the same.

Anyway three years ago I got sick of playing military marches and stuff all the time so I got myself a guitar.
Spent a year teaching myself using the almighty intorwebz and have been playing in a rock band for about 2 years now.

That is the funniest thing I have heard in ages!
