I'm half way through season 1 and I just can't get into it yet. I've heard it's the best show ever. Since I love dramas like Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, and Deadwood, I thought I'd love it.

But I'm having a hard time getting into it. Surely if this is the best show of all time I should be into it by now. I was into it by this point with all the other shows....

In my opinion it does (all of it was great, but season 2 was my favorite), but... as Ezekiel said, if you're not into it by now, you probably won't be later on, either.

I'd suggest finishing the first season (unless you actively dislike it) then seeing if you feel like watching any more.

I don't dislike it, I'm just not really hooked by it yet. I hear it all sort of ties in with each other later on.

Not only it does, the characters also really grow on you.

I'd say, give it the first season to convince you. If it's not your thing by then, it's fair enough not to bother with the rest.

I thought season 2 was regarded as the worst. Me personally I don't really have a favourite, they're all special in their own way

dscross, another thing to consider is that each season is very different from each other. Even if you end up liking season 1, you might hate season 2

Oh, I know... I never talked to a single other The Wire fan that shared that particular opinion of mine. And, to be fair, at the start of S2, I was like, "WTF is this? Where's everyone from the Barksdale crew? What the hell do I care about these people?"

But by the time it ended, the whole thing was so mind-boggingly broad and just plainly nefarious in scope, I was blown away. It honestly felt like a step back when we did get back to the Barksdales in season 3.

It didn't grab me either. It felt like an accurate reflection of the struggles of law enforcement and low income neighbourhoods but it's so easy to lose the plot in this show. I can appreciate the honest portrayal how the line between street cop and criminal can be blurry at best but it lacked a kind of compelling drama that makes me want to keep watching. With The Wire I often felt like I was watching a documentary which is good and all, but not something I can watch three seasons of.

I think this is the problem when something is rated so highly. If it doesn't blow you away immediately, you will get disappointed. That is why I feel some "classic" movies, books, etc. are overrated. They are spoken about in such reverent tone. It seems sacrilegious to say anything bad about them.

It took me until the second half of season 1 for me to start really liking it, but on a rewatch I don't know what was wrong with me, because it was great from the very start.

Well, you've not actually explained what you don't like about it.

'It gets better later' isn't quite what I'd say about it, as I do tend to think it's a veritable masterpiece of a show in general, but for me its full genius can only really be appreciated when you get through a few seasons, as it becomes a root and branch examination of society, i.e. from the corner boy to the major's office.

Its overall scope and scale obviously can't be appreciated in less than the first season that started it all, though I'd say its excellent writing and performances are right there from the off (which is what drew me in).

But, as others have said, if you're not really hooked yet, then why persist with something you're not enjoying? Life's too short for that.

...oh, it's been a while but have you got to the scene where two characters pretty much go through a crime scene saying 'fuck'? If you're not loving it by then, then there's no hope for you/it's just not your thang (delete as subjectively appropriate).

Well then, based on your experience I'd better finish season 1! ;) I have heard it's better on rewatch when you get where they are going with it.

GoT was the same. I didn't think it got interesting til Ep 6. I was lucky that the whole season had already aired and I could keep going. If it was week to week, I probably would have dropped it.
