Well, that would be the practical thing to put. Of course, I'd go with an explanation someone else said,i.e.

Well sure, if he was fused with He-Man.

and call the comic "Mario and the Masters of the Universe", because he clearly took a trip to Eternia and Castle Greyskull. "He has-a the power!" was the first thing that went through my head.

I'd love to read that fanfic- Mario gets the power of Greyskull and uses it to fight Bowser.
