Does using the dodge roll in SSBB make you cheap? and other questionably cheap techniques.

I'm playing SSBB with friends, I keep winning, mostly because I use my shield and dodge rolls. My friends start yelling how I'm a fag, gay, an asshole, etc... because I use those moves, but I see nothing wrong with it, and I think they just suck because they don't use them.

Who's right, am I an ass for using the dodge roll, or do they just suck?

And to keep a discussion going, what else do you use that others call cheap, or vice versa?

No, there are plenty of counters for it like spot dodging. If anything is cheap in that game it's the Fox character's final smashes.

I used to annoy my friends no end with Marth's Parry attack on SSB2

The same with Soul Calibur; I was a master with Raphael, and parrying with him opens up guards sooo easily. My friend was unbeaten with Talim, until I came along lol.

But yeh, it's not cheap, they suck lol. It's not that difficult either, it's just the timing that you need to get down with the rolling. I never used the shields though.

Nah, the dodging is all part of the game, and if they aren't skilled enough to adequately use those tools it's their fault.

"zomg ur a grenade whore" in Halo.

Seriously? You spawn with them. Shut up.

There are certain cheap characters in Super Smash Brothers, but dodging isn't cheap. It's annoying, yes. I hate it when people do it, but it's just because I haven't really mastered it yet. Everyone can do it.

I punch my friends in the balls while playing CoD4 and then kill them.

They call that cheap for some reason. I don't. I call it politics.

dodge rolling is not cheating, they only don't like you doing it because they can't do it. they need to practice more

Shield/Roll dodge completely fine, besides it does take some skill/practise to get it down and be able to actually be useful with it. Something that's cheap in SSBB is if you are just spamming 1 attack, like Pikachu's Thunder all...the freaking..time! Kinda contradicting myself though...>.>

Doing rolls or shielding isn't cheap. In fact, in my school's game club you are expected to that or else you will get beaten by practically everyone else. Your friends just suck. It's a feature in the game, so it's perfectly fair to use.

I annoyed the hell out of all my friends in Melee when they would only straight attack and I would shield grab and dodge roll almost the whole game. As far as other cheap tactics go, in World at War I'll get a tank and snipe people with the main gun while staying in an open area

Only in the same sense that blocking in Street Fighter is cheap. That is to say, not at all. Your friends need to learn to either learn to play, or stop complaining when they get demolished.

As for the concept of cheapness, I tend to go by the point of view put forth in Seth Killian's "On Cheapness" [http://insomnia.ac/commentary/domination_101/on_cheapness/]. It's more a reference toward Street Fighter and other traditional fighters, but it applies pretty well to the Smash Bros. series.

No, your friends just suck. Take them to a slave labour camp to teach them how to use dodge correctly, or you should just beat them. Not is SSB, in real life.

It's called them being scrubs. My friends always complain about using the c-stick for smash attacks, and claim that they don't need to do them. My question is how come I'm still beating them. Reasoning such as that only makes the scrub look worse. It's sad really.

I roll too much and my cousin has the timing down to own me when I lose the invincibility for that split second before I roll.

=(

Alternatively I roll too much resulting in me trying to roll when I should spot dodge to avoid being pwned by the incoming attack and it's my fault I get owned by Link's F-Smash all the damn time...
