Last night I went out to eat with a friend. We decided to get one huge thing for 2 and split it. All on one check. In the end after tax it was about 35$. The service was definitely not bad. Maybe slightly above average.

I asked him to give me 3.5$ since it should be a 7$ tip. According to the regular 20%. He refused and said he was giving 2$. I said did you think she did a bad job? And he says no she was pretty good. I said so why then? He just says because I'm not giving more and ended the conversation there. Other countries might have different etiquette but in the US if they did well they should get 20%.

I've never worked in the restraunt business but I'm sure they despise bad tippers. Especially if they did a good job. Please don't be a bad tipper.

I can't really think of a reason to be cheap unless it was bad service. Am I missing something?

I see no reason to tip them at all personally.

I tip because it is primarily how waiters get money, and having to work to give some asshats food really sucks. So I always tip at least 5%.

In the US waiters and waitresses are paid less than the minimum wage and it is assumed that will be tipped to bring their pay over that amount. In countries where you don't usually tip, you have higher meal costs because the establishment usually pays their workers over minimum and factors that into the price of what you order.

And yet i've seen many family members tip still at dinners. Strange.

Huh. I thought gratuity was 15%.
And you would be correct. 15% is the norm (in the States at least).

20% if the service was good. (edit: ninja'd)

Something bad tippers don't generally understand is that when you're working that kind of job, you're pretty heavily reliant on your tips because wage laws in most states allows employers to pay less than minimum wage. We're talking, like, 2, maybe 3 dollars an hour.

I tip 15-20% when I can.

Don't be a bad tipper? Don't be a bad server. If the service sucks,

Normal service really shouldn't get a tip either, as it's not my job to pay somebody's wages if they aren't working for me, but since one guy here or there not tipping isn't going to change the stupid way that wage laws work, I do it anyway.

Great service means better tip, of course.

I don't get any of this at all...

I pay for the food then leave, and the waiters don't feel the need to stab me in the neck and steal my watch.
No idea what the standard is in France, but in the US waiters in some places earn as little as $2/hr - their entire wage is their tip. It shouldn't be that way, but it is.
Not the constumers problem is it?
Take it up with the union!

I usually do 10%, and even then I rarely tip, I only tip if I know that the person has tips as a major part of the salary. Honestly I wish they would just get rid off the whole, get paid a low wage and expect large tips to help, sure it should be a motivator for an employee to work well so a patron will tip them, but I've had enough experiences where the service is bad and the employee still expects a tip. The idea of a tip is you did your job well or went above and beyond and it is supposed to be some reward. Nowadays it just seems to be an unlisted cost that you're expected to pay every time you go out. That and there are way too many services out there that expect a tip.

Also I really hate places that actually include a tip in the bill. Since when is that something you're allowed to charge a person? And it isn't like I'm allowed to refute it, trust me I've tried at every place I've gone to and inspected the bill. When I go to pay I'm like yea, I left a tip on the table for the waiter/waitress you can take this off my bill; guess what they won't. That and some employees have the cojones to want a cash tip and the one on the bill.

I don't know how it came about in england, if it came from america or was due to our own reasons.. but they don't rely on tips here yet the expected norm is 10%. It is a bit annoying and that scene does make a good point, you don't tip at Macdonalds or at a bakery.. or anywhere which involves buying something. Is it a 10% cost on whatever you order because they ask you what you want and then go and get it, instead of you asking and them getting it? If it's a place where you order at the bar and pay, why is there no tip when they bring it to you?

Anyway, I still tip because I'm a little ***** who complains but just goes with it. I draw the line at tipping for just a drink.. and especially when on the receipt it states how much I SHOULD tip.

To add a bit more depth to the conversation, whenever I order a takeaway, why does it always cost more than what the takeaway menu states?

I tip 15%, the norm in Canada. If it was good, I'll round up to the nearest dollar. If average, I'll round to whatever's easier. If it was exceptionally bad, I'll tip less or not at all. That's only come up once or twice, though.

People that say they don't believe in tipping annoy me. But so do former servers and current servers that think I should tip 20-30%. That's just insane.

You know how everyone turns against him for doing that? Because it's a total dick move. By not tipping in a country where it's the expected norm and wages are adjusted accordingly, you're proving nothing except that you are a societally incompetent douchebag.

Edit: And Flamezdudes, that's not necessarily directed at you. More at anyone in a country where you're expected to tip who takes that scene as a personal mantra. I see you live in Great Britain, where it's not the norm to tip anyways.

I know it's not much of a norm in Great Britain to tip, however I do still see it often. It's just... yes I know in America Waiters may not get payed that much but thats not the customers problem.
