If there going to beg from paying customers i will not tip them, the fact that people expect to be tipped (they dont just want the tip THEY EXPECT TO BE GIVEN A TIP.) for doing the job they agreed to do and are under contract for for the wage they agreed is insane, its just one hell of a self entitlement complex that i see as a utter joke.

Let me make this perfectly clear, im not employing them, if they have something against there pay take it up with your boss and not the damn customer.

This is why i dont eat out unless i don't have too. More noticeably i don't go to the same place twice if i do have to eat out, Hell people are malicious when they don't get what they expect.

I never tip. Mainly because we dont tip in Australia. They get paid either way I dont see why I should have to give them extra. Sure they most likely dont get paid a lot but thats their job. I pay for a meal and that is all.

oooooh their isn't alot of people here playing the devil's advocate here is their?
don't worry satan, i'm here to spread your ultimatly destructive thoughts!

So on the rare occasion where i pay the bill, rather then pass it to next sap or try to get an eat n run going, and i'm thinking of lame execuses to convince myself that i don't really have to pay a tip, the first one i can come up with is, you see, tipping is like voting. no one ever won by a single vote ever, probably, maybe, actuallynottrueatall and my 5 bucks isn't really going to buy anything, so is their actually any need for her to have it, especially with all the hundreds and thousands and trillions of tips she'll be getting as a waitress?

and if their work is hard, why don't they just quit their jobs and become lazy street bums? the last bum i saw was happy as clam, if the clam had no food or shell. Then it would be like they were still getting paid in tips, but they didn't have to do shit! I mean the bums who literally make nothing are the ones who should be getting money for nothing. I still wouldn't spare em anything of course.

Edit: ooooh i thought up another cheap thought! okay caring about how society works is for sheep, so you're paying more money for food that is slightly better tasting then fast food but takes forever to get, and then you have this conversation imaginary conversation with the waitress and you're like i'm paying so much for this food, so why aren't you getting a better wage from your boss instead of an extremely shitty one and she goes because your supposed to pay the rest of it under penalty of me having mean thoughts about you and YOU LAUGH IN HER FACE HA! it's a good thing all those sheep by in to that so i don't have to pay extra for the food to pay the waitresses!!

well there's my arguement, if i have gotten any of you to decide not to tip then i have done a terrible thing... double ha!

also if you think im the worst sort of scum for not tipping, then i'll just say youre jealous cause you've been wasting your money on tips! triple ha!

I'm living in South Korea at the moment, and I encountered an amusing reversal of the whole "refusing to tip" thing. I'm an English teacher, and I often go to restaurants in town with other foreigners (Brits, Americans, Australians, Kiwis, etc), and in Korea, tipping is a big no. In the culture here, it implies they're poor and need more help - I'm alright with this, it makes sense to me, and since I'm British, I tip rarely back home anyway.

After finishing our dinner (bulgogi!), the new teacher from California asked us about how much we tip, and we explained that it wasn't the done thing here. Well, he was furious, "what kind of heartless jerk doesn't tip?" etc etc. We tried to explain that nobody tips because it's rude, but he wouldn't believe us. Assumed we were trying to cover for our "petty greed".

So, he tried to leave 20% of the total behind on top, since we were "too miserly" to tip, and on our way our a waitress came dashing after us down the street, telling us we'd paid too much.

Feels good to live in a country where employers are obligated to pay livable wages to their workers.

Apparently you haven't read any of the thread if you think that.

I don't do the math on it. If the service is good I'll empty out the change in my wallet or give a 5 or 10.

I don't generally tip, because tipping is not practically part of the paycheck in Australia, and so our workers tend to get more money straight up than in America.

Someone serving me shouldn't require a tip for decent service, that's assumed. I'll consider a tip when I'm genuinely impressed with speed, etiquette and power level.
Do you only tip if their power level is over 9000?
No, that's when I leave, because there's no way that can be right.

holy crap a moley another thing i feel like asking is why do you guys pay such meticoulus fucking attetion to the percent of your tip!? Is the difference between paying $2 and $6 really so big that $2 dollars is a cheap peice of shit at best and $6 dollar tipper is some creepy saint? my personal gauge for determining tipping is to choose whatever the amount of change i don't want to bother carrying around is, regardless of the amount of smiling the waitress did.

Edit:

oh ninja'd by sporky111? cool so i'm not just weird.

For me I usually tend to leave at least 15-18% normally if the service was decent. If you have an amusing personality or you are so on the ball that it almost feels like you're psychic then 25%+. If your an asshole and ignore me constantly then you get nothing.

Although I do have to agree with Mr. Pink's quote. I've worked in customer service on campgrounds and people can be outright dicks for no reason. Some outright dangerous. It really doesn't seem right that only waiters are tipped. Really, what do they put up with that so many other people don't? Nothing really, and carrying food/dishes and taking orders isn't that hard.

I remember my days working in high school. Thankless jobs for very little pay. Building fences through areas with concrete foundations, clearing trees, and so on. We even had the joy of people interrupting us and getting mad at us for nonsense. Crap like what rare birds were in the area (and bitching at us for not knowing) or why do we have to catch groundhogs in horrible (humane) traps. Even had one random guy who felt he had to tell us about his shitty job because we were stuck painting a shed and couldn't leave. Did we ever get tips? No.

Frankly speaking, the tipping "culture" is just something that restaurants use to say "But you'll get tipped" so they can get away with paying shitty wages.

I suppose I generally do tip, but I still think the practise is bloody dumb.

Unless someone goes exceptionally out of their way to provide something out of the norm then no tip at all. I'm not paying someones wages for what they are supposed to do anyway, I don't give a shit if they are primarily paid on tips.

I tip about 10%, but it's not set in stone. 20% seem like too much for my income, I think your friend was fine with the tip he gave. It's also fine if you want to give more. But really how much work did the waitress do? ;p And why is she so much better then the dish washer?

I've always been told that you're supposed to tip 15%. The amount I would give over that for above average service is less than the amount I would take away for bad service. Say 17-19% for good service, 5-10% for bad service.

What I don't get is why is it a percentage based on the price of the food? Isn't the same amount of effort involved for the server whether I get the steak and lobster or a side salad? Why not pay a few dollars regardless of the total bill for worthy service otherwise the tips seem meager for small bills and outright robbery for bills over $100.

The whole nonsense with tipping waiters and waitresses just so they can make minimum wage seems ridiculous to me. Tips should only come to you if you do an above average job. I am also getting confused by the percentage for an appropriate tip going up every time I hear about it. A few years back I heard 10% was okay, then 15% was okay, now 20% seems to be the minimum that is expected. They should get paid at least minimum wage from the job itself not what is supposed to be a bonus for doing a good job.
(P.S. I am in America)

I always do 15%. To be honest, I think they really need to just start paying waiters properly. It'd be better for the waiters and it'd be better for consumers. I haven't done my research, so I don't know if it'd really affect the business or not.
