Yeah that definitely had a strong effect, but...

The truth of the matter is drugs affect people wildly differently. I smoke pot a couple of times a week (been doing so for about a year) and I have never had any of the supposed side-effects (such as paranoia, hallucinations, vomiting, etc...).

Of course I'd never do meth because it's so much harsher and easier to get addicted to, but with all of the campaigns and from my experiences with drugs I always think "well, that could happen, but probably won't".

I only smoke pot. The propaganda about it is entirely untrue, it only starts to mess you up if you smoke tons of it and do nothing else, but the same could be said for many things. I'd never touch meth

Meh, I never really saw the appeal of drugs since I can get an adrenaline high whenever I want.

The rare "public service announcements" things that actually moved me were the drunk driving ones the SAAQ (DMV) made a few years back.

Like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bh4oUZ6ieJ8 ouch  the guy is saying "i didn't drink that much" they used to put that on tv during peak hours

no, they don't do anything for me. What does is the fact that i have family members addicted to drugs and alcohol and an uncle in the hospital from drugs and alcohol. Seeing what drugs and alcohol do first hand are great motivators NOT to.

These are all terrible adverts. They say nothing other than "Drugs! They'll wreck your life!" with some handy visual metaphor. They don't really shock you or make you think. Especially as the meth-girl doesn't even have meth-mouth. There's a shocking image for you.

One of the things that makes me proud of England is how awesome our government safety adverts are. Can't think of any drug ones, but here's a selection:

Creepy zombie child (Road Safety): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeUX6LABCEA&feature=related
Julie Knew Her Killer (Seatbelts, this one's a classic):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKHY69AFstE

My personal favourite is a radio one: "This is the sound of a train as it hits someone on a level crossing *Perfectly normal train sound* 10 stone of flesh and blood will have no effect on a thousand pounds of steel travelling at a hundred miles an hour. "

Or the epic "Don't Die Before You've Lived" adverts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERPb3RRvX98
There's one awesome one that they show at the cinema. It's a bit like this one, but rather than Cribs it's a trailer for a Bourne-style action movie. The worst bit? Looks like a DAMN GOOD movie.

That first add didn't shock me as it didn't even explain what meth does to you. It just reminds me I need to watch Sixth Sense again.

Most types of anti-drug adverts are aimed at people with no self-control and advertised with false or misleading "facts" and statistics.

Almost all drugs have negative effects, you just have to be smarter using the more powerful ones, is all.

I don't know, none of those ads never strike me as anything, I've never done drugs (except alcohol I guess, though I moderate that a bit) cause I despise the lack of control and obscured perception I expect to get. On the other hand I have friends who have done drugs or do drugs, nothing wrong with them.

Back on the topic of ads though, maybe its because there's so many different ones that they lose all meaning. The only ones that ever really made me feel a bit disgusted were the smoking ones where in they dissect a smokers body or something.

I've smoked weed for a period of two years, which led me to a smoking habit. Now I only drink beer once a month or so and don't smoke at all (okay, a cigar once a year). I don't even take medication. I prefer a clean body and clean mind now. Just feels right.

What they say in Sin City is absolutely true. You'll never really stop smoking. When you stop smoking, things only have to reach a certain degree of bad, and you will want to smoke. That's one of the reasons why I would discourage people to smoke.

I have compiled a little rap done in the stylies of your favourite anti-(d)rugs campaigners.

Yo kidz. Let me lay down a phat beat for ya'll to shake yo booty to!

None of you kidz, should be doing no drugz, coz you will get beat downz, by the meth-selling thugz. Increasing their turf, it's sense that you lack, when you could be buying my higher-grade crack.

I don't need an add to warn me off drugs.

My little brother's suicide due to a drug dependency did that for me.

Anyone who pushes these drugs onto kids is the lowest scum of the earth and I really hope there's some karma in the afterlife for those cunts.

I once mixed copious amounts of weed with psychoactive mushrooms.
Lets just say that that ruined me for a solid year and a half, and only now have I started to recover from the effects.
And note: if you do take shrooms and you start fighting the effects, you'll do more damage than you think. Especially if you're sleep deprived.
