I've been making minimum wage for the last three and a half years working in a retail store. I only get about 20 hours a week. I owe $11,000 on my college loan (pretty low by most standards) for my bachelors of science degree in Business Administration. I've applied for dozens and dozens of jobs across two major cities over the last two years.

I recently applied to work at the local Pepsi warehouse which paid $13 an hour. At my workplace, I overheard someone mentioning that their friend got a job there. This friend never graduated high school. So yeah, don't bother going to school. Waste of your time and money. There's no defense of it. The only way I have the shit job I have now is because my dad worked there and complained to my old boss enough to hire me.

Don't care. I want my $11,000 back. I don't see why someone else should get scammed just because society says so.

umm... I disagree?

Yeah I'm off to University in September providing I get the grades and I think it's gonna be a lot of fun. Of course jobs are going to be scarce and harder to get with the current economic situation that most countries are in, but in a few years it'll probably improve, so I'd have to disagree with what you said.

It'll be fun, I'll meet lots of new people, I get to study exactly what I want and it increases my chances of getting a steady job. And the student loans? You don't have to pay them back unless you earn over like £26,000 a year? Something like that. Even then it's by miniscule amounts every month.

Alternately, go to college/university. If not simply to expand your horizons, then to gain skills for later in life when the economy gets slightly better.

Especially if you live in the UK or most of Europe, where either you get loans which the government only asks you to pay back when you're earning an alright amount of money, or the government flat-out pays for you.

The economy sucks. Some of us don't have the work record which would grant us a better chance of employment right now, due to spending time and money getting educated.

Don't stop striving for what you'd like to do because everyone's in the shit right now. And if that means getting a degree, do that.

So you went to school, didn't get a job with your intended major, and now college is bad for everyone and we should all drop out? No thanks. Bad luck for you though buddy.

In America you have to pay back your loan no matter what, even if you go bankrupt. Education loans are tied to you for the rest of your life. If you don't pay them, they'll garnish your wages. I didn't make any friends in college, had no fun, and never even got laid. Don't listen to your parents and don't listen to what TV tells you. It is a pack of lies.

The problem with this is that not all college, universities and courses are equal. For we know, you may have barely passed your course or have attended a college with a poor reputation. In nowadays competitive market it isn't enough just to have a degree, I'm half way through a three year science course and I'm making large efforts to take part in non-course activities to prove I have leadership skills and all that bullshit. Dropping out now after over a year of work would be a huge waste of time.

I had a 3.53 (out of 4) grade point average. Also, it doesn't matter what clubs and programs you enroll in if no one looks at your resumé.

I go to college for free because I'm European. I need the specific college degree I'm getting to get into business academy. Once I finish there I will be going into a sector which currently has 5% unemployment and expects to see about 20% of its employees retire over the next 10 years. I get paid to attend college and I have significant savings as a result.

Explain to me why I need to drop out of college please.

Enjoy that hope while you still have it. I bet it feels nice.

I still see studying as a good option.
So you've searched work for 2 years?
Hint: don't go sulking, search for a job, why only 2 cities?
I mean if you want a good job 2 cities won't be enough and maybe someday you'll get your job that you've studied for. Just because it doesn't happen immediately doesn't mean you should give up, that's when you'll end up being were you are now!
Stay in school kids! (that goes for me as well!)
But whining about it in a forum won't give you that job, that much I can guarante.

I'm not looking for a job with my intended major. I'm looking for any job and I'm getting passed over by people with no educational achievements or work experience. This isn't about luck. Bad luck would have still gotten me a job months ago.

Ok, so it's either go to college and have a CHANCE of ending up in a job like that...
Or don't go to college and DEFINITELY get a job like that.
Sorry, I think I'll stick to my education.

I have a Masters degree in urban design, £12,000 owed to the Student loans company and am volunteering at a local primary school to help the part time special needs teacher.

I asked to volunteer at the local council and they couldn't take me on... to work for free

So yeah, university for me was a bit of a waste of time, but I believe I will get a job in my field eventually. The problem is that too many people are getting degrees with not enough relevant jobs available in that area. I entered the job market at the worst possible time: the construction industry has collapsed and all sectors are experiencing job losses not new openings.

On the other hand everyone I know that did economics at university is tripping over job offers for excellently paid jobs. Your problem is that you (like me) have just done a degree qualifying us for jobs in an oversaturated, shrinking market. Of course we're screwed. We just have to tighten our belts, put on the McDonalds hats, and flip those burgers till the economy recovers.

Scammed? Lol. It isn't a scam. Picking what was possibly the wrong degree and not being able to get a job doesn't make it a scam. They didn't sell you a job, they sold you education. Don't start some self-entitled whining about how it was a scam because you didn't get a job.
Self entitled? You spend 11 grand on an education and not work for two years and then we'll talk about entitlement.

At present unemployment across the whole nation is about six percent, until 2008 it was at two percent. Debt to GDP ratio is 60% (Compared with 100% for the US)

Again, explain to me why I need to drop out of college. There aren't any unskilled jobs around here.

Do you have one of those jobs yet? I'd get one if I were you. Don't wait until you have a degree. They may be gone by the time you're finished.

This, in big parts of Europe we have this advantage.
In Finland:
You work --> You get paid --> 20% of your wage goes to the state --> The state funds big parts of Healthcare, School, Help for unemployed to find work etc --> Younger generattion goes to work --> restart cycle.
This works perfectly and if you think it's too "communistic" for you we do have private sectors which take your money away faster than a bunny can say carrot. (which no one thinks here)
