I was reading the One Piece manga recently, and a certain quote got to me. A soldier had said that "Doesn't all the people losing their lives look like complete idiots?"

That really got to me. Don't soldiers ever stop to think what there fighting for? I understand the "protect their love ones" argument, but were their love ones in danger to begin with? It just seems most soldiers across the world go and die and kill because someone had told them too.
A One Peice Manga, AKA Japanese Comic book makes you think that soldiers are idiots? Well jeez, if it wasnt for Comic books, I wouldn't know how people are in real life at all.

Yes, people stop to think what they are fighting for. In fact, the soldiers here in the US know more about what they are fighting for than the Government. You ask any of them who have seen the people directly affected by the taliban.
I have more than enough family members who have seen what is going on.

My friend, anime and manga is pretty much the complete anthesis of real life.

In anime, soldiers are assholes or heroes.
In real life, soldiers are real people.

In manga, schoolgirls are promiscuous and tend to enjoy being raped.
In real life, schoolgirls are usually not particular promiscuous and tend to loathe being raped.

In manga, giant walking mechs are a feasible means of combat.
In reality, they aren't.

In anime, people can become important and influential in military organisations due to their skills.
In reality, military organisations have a lot of very skilled people already and the main character is probably not even close to the top of the pile.

In manga, katana's can cut through anything.
In reality, katana's have a hard time cutting through anything that isn't soft and easily cut.

In anime, explosions don't kill people much.
In reality, if the blast and overpressure doesn't get you, the shrapnel will.

In short, your logical premise is flawed. Reboot from start, if you please.
Alright, I'm starting to get pissed of. I never compared soldiers from anime to fucking real life. I just took a quote, and contemplated upon it. I never said "The soldier in One Piece are so leet with their devil fruits1111111!!!!"

SO please, read my post before you yourself post.

I completely disagree and I am offended at the notion of calling Soldiers Idiots. You may not like the war they fight in but they fight for nations so we do not have too they deserve nothing but our respect. they are people who risk there live everyday. Would you call the soldiers who fought for England, America and Russia stupid because they were fighting the nazis and giving europe. Also sometimes soldiers are dragged into combat for example VIetnam the draft are they Idiots because they got drafted into Vietnam. Soldiers are people willing to fight and die for there country they are brave men and women. SO please show them the respect they deserve.
Word.

The original poster is just a dick. You don't even know these people or who they are or what they stand for. Jimi Hendrix was a solider. Does that suddenly make him stupid? I'm sure soldiers question what they are fighting for often, but just because they don't rebel and make a complete ass out of themselves or the army does not make them idiots.

I'm sure there are plenty of soldiers smarter than you or I.
Thats kinda what I want to know. What are they fighting for? As said before, I can understand if they were fighting for their homeland/ family, but is that even really the case most of the time?

Also, I'm not a dick, I'm an asshole. Huge difference.
Some might be fighting because they have made mistakes and don't have anywhere else to go. Others may be fighting because they believe in what their country is fighting for. Both of my grandfathers were in World War 2. I have never thought either of them are "stupid" because of this. I have respected them even more.

They fought to save the world, essentially. If that makes you stupid, well then I'd like to be so stupid that I can't count to 1.

Oh, and by the way, the country usually decides what that country is fighting for. Therefore, if a country thinks it is its best interest to gain natural resources, then the country "may" do that by force. Politicians decide what is in the country's best interest, not soldiers. That isn't in their job description.

It is a soldier's duty to follow orders, no matter what they be. If not, what would war be?
And to expand on this, war is inevitable - There will always be a need for it in the world. It's just how nations behave.
Actually, the formost causes of wars are Religion and Capitalism/Greed, if these things were no longer what we based our decision on, war would go away, for the most part.

That's more of a criticism of the military policies rather than soldiers in general though. If nobody in the USA for example went through the crap required to be a soldier, and therefore had no military whatsoever, then what would happen to the country? It'd be fucked basically.

I agree with the part about going to other countries such as the Middle East being bullshit, but a military is still required for "what if" scenarios, and so having those willing to put up with all the crap is a good thing.

That doesn't mean there are not idiots who do it for foolish reasons, but that goes for every job going.

As mentioned before, I would sign up, but I don't intend to be blown up by a road side bomb in a foreign country where a significant portion of the population don't even want me to be there.
This is going to come off as a little "hippy-ish" but if nobody had an army, wouldn't the world be a better place? I know the chances of that happening are negligible.

What are the chances of somebody invading America if they had no army? They would still have nukes and long ass range missiles atleast.

I was recently talking to a woman who was going back to college after being in the Navy for some years, and she said that while it was terrible while it was going on, looking back it was a really positive experience for her. There's some people living with my family where the father used to be in the military. Same deal there. I understand where you're coming from, but I think the voice of experience might have a little more weight than your speculation.
I am just talking about the army 'cos in the navy your how many miles away from the enemy? You can pretty much bombard the enemy without them firing a shot back, unless they have boats or ships (yes, there is a difference. Boats are subs according to the navy), even then I bet your less likely to die.

As for the air force, have you seen todays planes? They be some scary ass things! You would need some high end computers to shoot them things down, something I don't think Iraq has.

There was a thing I saw about apache helicopters, they can pop up a few miles away from behind a mountain, identify the top 30 most dangerous targets and destroy them all (if I remember correctly)in less than 1 minute. I think we have all seen the devastation that thing can bring.

So I consider the army as the most dangerous choice.

The military can teach discipline and order etc but the risk far out weighs the reward, you can get all the same things from taking up a sport, take up MMA and you will be just as "hard" as any soldier. (notice I said soldier and not SAS or green beret)

I guess some people have to do it, I just think it isn't worth it.

You probably should have thought about that. There is no way at all that could have come out sounding right.

And quite frankly, I think I speak for many people whn I say this, Screw you. These people give at least a good four years of their lives for you. So when people like you sit in your comfy house on the computer and try to accuse them of being idiots, you can basically STFU. They deserve every God Damn ounce of respect you can give them.

Unless your playing Metal Gear or Call of Duty.

Then Yeah, they are pretty dumb.

Absolutely, but humans have been murdering each other since they started, there's no reason to stop now.

As for Nukes and whatnot, who would you want with the finger on the button? Joe from down the road, or a man who has spent months or years being trained discipline and to follow orders?

Jesus Christ just read what he says please. He said soldiers seem stupid, not that they are. How is this difficult to grasp?

The same way it seems stupid to me why anybody in England would want to be a teacher when half the kids don't want to learn and they are tied up by so many restrictions that the pupils actually have more power than they do. It doesn't mean I think teachers are stupid, just that it can look that way from the outside.

Oh, and read my posts if you are going to start accusing me of insulting soldiers.

They're told that they fight for their country, the training drills out the free-thought to challenge that concept (Which is for their own benefit let's face it).

But why the fuck would anyone die for someone they don't know? Also, I'm not calling them idiots, I think they seem like idiots. Also, I'm not talking about just OUR soldiers, I'm talking about ALL soldiers in general.

Why would you kill or be killed just because someone told you too? To get respect? I'd much prefer my life than something as shallow as "props".

As much as movies and games would make you think otherwise, soldiers are not mindless clones. Their motivations and desires are just as real and varied as anyone else's.

Some do it out of a sense of nationalism. Some do it because service runs in the family. Others do it because they want to defend their home or their family. Still others just need to put food on the table, the only way they know how.

Perhaps I am biased. But why are they idiotic? Because they willingly chose to go fight for the freedom of all those imprisoned by the Nazis? Because they chose to save other people's lives? Because they chose to defend the freedom of Europe? That seems rather selfless to me.

You aren't defining the difference between being an idiot and being idiotic. It appears that one is just the adjective version of the noun version. Therefore you'd be calling my grandfathers, and everyone else who has ever fought in a war, an idiot.

Plan and simple, not every war is worth being fought. Some are though. WW2 is a prime example. Vietnam is a prime example of war that shouldn't have been fought.

But that doesn't make those soldiers any less brave, and it certainly doesn't make them stupid. Again, every soldier has a different reason for being a soldier. Those reasons vary, so you can't say that "any soldier who isn't fighting to defend his/her home is stupid." Because real life is much different from manga. There are complex and intricate reasonings for the choice to become a soldier.

And don't ever call my grandfathers idiotic because they fought to save people they had never met.

You're basing a generalization about world militaries on a manga?
