I quite enjoyed Quake 4 and found it suprising to hear they where going with Doom before another Quake. After finding D00m 3 to have the major problem of heavy graphical power with no reason to actually have that power when you couldnt SEE any of the details in the dark, gloomles (gloom opposed to dark would of been excellent) mapping.

And additonal the maps themselfs in doom 3, seemed to become very repeative to with limited amount of monsters that appeared in predicatable ways. Hidden room A, Imp behind Door B. Vent monster C. Dead Body becoming Zombie D ect ect.

The FPS horror game could really use some new idea to the style... and a Duke nuke em game :)

Damn, when is that Duke Nukem Forever game ever going to finish!?

I've never played Doom3, only the first one; but I heard the game was critized(sp) alot for the lighting, not being able to hold a torch and a gun at the same time or something.

Most realistic? Really? Well, I have seen gates to hell open up (on a base on Mars, no less) and spew satanic monsters in my everyday life, so I guess it could be. THere is no possible way that a Doom game could ever be considered minutely realistic unless they got rid of every single aspect that makes it a Doom game.

On the whole, Doom 3 was not a very good game. Substituting genre to try and be survival horror didn't work well, especially when nothing was scary, only startling. I have seen some stuff on Doom 4 (a long time ago, couldn't provide links), and it looks like they're trying to go back in the direction of the older ones (run and gun instead of horror), but it will take quite a game to convince me that the series really needs to go on.

Oh, and if you act like you're 12, and you are 12, that's to be expected. If people mistake you for a 12 year old, but you're 18, there's a problem...

The first Doom was and I think will always be the best. Doom 2 and 3 werent very good. The Quake series got better as it went along. I even liked the most recent Quake, but didn't care much for Doom 3. I prefer Doom RPG on my cell phone over Doom 3.
I like doom 3 - I even enjoyed the flashlight mechanic no matter how stupid and urealistic it was that in the future the Marines don't have a handy way to mount flashlights on their weapons. Hell, I had a flaslight AND fancy optics on my M4 when I was in the Army and deployed and I worked in a non-combat occupation.

That being said, id is something of an enigma. There was a time when they produced leading edge games in general, but these days the insistance that games not be ABOUT anything is certainly harming their place in the world.

If they are indeed workin on Doom4, I'm really, really hoping that they change directions from the last one. I want something with pacing closer to the original Doom games. Painkiller and Serious Sam are actually much closer to what I enjoyed about the original two Doom games than Doom 3.

Also, I'm getting just a little bit sick of the dirty dank brown and grey 'Alien/s' aesthetic. That's been pervasive in almost every sci-fi FPS aside from Halo and Halflife.

Doom 4 sounds awesome, but I don't think they'll ever get back to the Doom 1 and 2 style. FPS games are so different nowadays and the old Doom kind of gaming wouldn't have commercial potential anymore. Not that I wouldn't like to have the old Dooms back, I loved the Classic Doom mod for Doom 3 which recreated Doom 1's first episode with all its fast-paced action.

I didn't understand why the bodies in doom 3 turned to dust a la buffy the vampire slayer. I remember when knee deep in the dead used to mean something. I nominate Painkiller without cutscenes as the new Doom 3.

I'd like a doom4 if they go back to doom1 and doom2 styles of play. ie: More killing, less stuff popping out from the walls.

The only level in doom3 that I think was really like that was the hell level, and that wasn't nearly enough for drudging my way through the alpha labs. It was scary at times, but it's just, it shouldn't have a doom sticker on it.

Anyway, I think it's coming out after Rage anyway.

Not to derail the thread, but I think that game looks good.

But doom4 certainly has promising possibilities.

I hear for Doom 4, you'll need a monitor that can show such blacks as haven't even been discovered by Science yet.

We're talking a background so black that your human brain couldn't possibly comprehend the blackness. A flashlight wouldn't work, you'd need an actual 10,000 watt halogen lamp just to see your monitor.

I only like Doom 1. Then again, I havn't played the second or third. It might be a good thing I haven't played doom 3 though.

Definitely a good thing. But play DOOM 2! It's either almost as good as DOOM 1, or even better than DOOM 1, depending on who you ask. Awesome game in any case!

Doom 3 was okay. It had that delightful 'jumpy' quality to it; you know, when you're playing all alone and it's dark out and... OH GOD WHAT WAS THAT!?

I thought the ambient story (picking up voice recordings for backstory) was pretty good too, and a lot of games copied the game mechanic of letting players go about their business while listening to those recordings in the background. Used to be that you had to sit... and listen... and wait to get back to poking around bloodstained maintenance hallways.

I believe a lot of people were disappointed with Doom 3 because they expected it to be just like the first two. I actually liked Doom 3. It wasn't an amazing game by any means but it was definitely above average. I'd give it an 85%.

Doom 3 did introduce us to a lot of new gameplay mechanics. Take the audio logs for example, and the whole GUI system was just fantastic. As long as you don't play Doom 3 expecting it to be like Doom 1/2 then I think you're set to to be at least satisfied with the game as a whole.

To me the only really big disappointment was that I couldn't just shoot the cyberdemon. But a mod fixed that for me.

Lets be honest though, CWS's ruin your night vision and have a very limited field of view. Its like asking to semi blinded to nasty things which go bump in the night, and a flash light might as well be a "Free kill" sign, so must rifles dont let you mount them. So could you imagin using them in a cramp dark area like in d00m3 :p (the only thing which might make sense would be IF googles but why would anyone have those in space!)

I personally loled at the duck tape mode people made for doom3 it made a lot of sense to me and was funny. but the whole point of the darkness of the game was to create a sense of the unknown and hence try and shake the player a bit.

Looking at other horror games ive played, the only one which i can remember is Deadspaces Super monster. Very enjoyable bit of a semi-bland but enjoyable game. (Dead space didnt do much new but what it did, was done well dammit! :> )

Addition audio logs are from system shock 2, which gets ripped off a lot. And Yahtzee has used it as a point of refence a few times for a "better game" comparsion. SS2 and deus ex are 2 golden oldies which still impress me today.
