Doomsday believers flock to Serbian mountain hotels

So here's a story that my first response to was pretty much just: "wat?"

Hundreds of people who are convinced the world will end on December 21 are flocking to a supposedly mystical mountain in Serbia.

Hotels at the base of Mount Rtanj are being inundated with booking requests from believers of the Mayan prophecy.

Doomsday cultists believe the area has mysterious powers that will save those who live there from the apocalypse.

Followers of the end-of-the-world scenario think the 5,100ft-high (1,554m) mountain, part of the Carpathian range, conceals a pyramidal building inside, left behind by alien visitors thousands of years ago.

They believe that it emits special energy that could be channelled to protect them from the end of life as we know it.

"In one day we had 500 people trying to book rooms. People want to bring their whole families," The Daily Telegraph reported hotel manager Obrad Blecic as saying.

Predictions of an apocalypse are linked to the fact that the 5,125-year-old calendar of the ancient Mayans, who dominated large stretches of southern Mexico and Central America centuries ago, comes to an end on December.

Internet speculation had initially identified the village of Bugarach in France as the only place that would survive the apocalypse.

However, the mayor announced that over 100 police officers will seal off the village From December 19 to 23 to keep out Doomsday groups.

What are the Escapist forum goer's thoughts on this? Secret underground alien pyramids with mystic powers that can be channelled into warding off an apocalypse predicted by an ancient people.

To me it sounds like borderline, if not total, insanity but I admit that I'm totally wishing that I owned property in the area. Not because I think it'd save me or that I'm under threat but because I'd be making an absolute killing in rates.

I can see, in the second part of the story, that village being "sealed off" by police getting real ugly though as scared people try and get to "safety".

Each and every Doomsday I am disappointed that there is no media coverage of these events. By that, I mean I wish there were cameras focused on a random selection of individuals in order to capture the exact moment they realize that their Doomsday isn't real and that they are undeniably morons.

Seriously, I want to capture the essence of that dawning realization for future scientists to study and analyze.

What the hay, I didn't know there was a timer code...

Well, I suppose fleeing from the doomsday makes at least more sense than fleeing from the rapture.

Nor did I until a few days ago, I was surprised that such a useful piece of code had flown under the radar for this long, so I'm trying to get it out to the public.

I said it once and I will say it again, I cannot wait until 21 December is over so I can finally stop hearing this end of the world bullshit and then proceed to laugh at those who actually believe it

The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me. I can't wait for the 21st to watch all the people who believe this crap latch on to some other stupid bullshit when it doesn't happen.

The unfortunate part is, once December 22nd rolls around, some other moron will come up with yet another "end of the world" prediction.

Yea that's pretty much how it will work, someone is going to find some obscure old piece of paper that says the world will end because batman, and a bunch of idiots will believe it and prepare some bullshit shelter and nothing will happen and we can all start to get ready for the next go around.

It's gonna be really funny if the world gets totally fucked up on 21st.
I will heartily laugh whilst being burned by the son/purged by God/falling into the center of the earth/drowned/ripped apart by our new unicorn overlords/etc etc.

Look, guys we can all agree that they'll survive the 21st, right? I mean, so would everybody else, but still, that doesn't meant the mountains didn't protect them.

You know, i'm now going to have to write that on a bit of old parchment and bury it somewhere.

Watching a news report on apocalypse by Batman/giant banana's falling from the sky/invasion of giant pink toenail clipping eating mushrooms.

You know someone, somewhere, will take those seriously.

I can't decide which is worse, those that still take these "predictions" seriously or those that take every single one seriously every single time.

It must be disappointing gearing up for the end of the world every few months just to realise nothings changed except they no longer own a house or have any money because they got rid of it all due to stupidity.

...Well now I know where they will be, I think I can arrange a little "end of the world" for them.

Now where did I leave those nuclear launch codes?

I think that in order to defend themselves from that kind of shame, they go into denial instead. For example, the people flocking to those hotels will probably say on the 22nd that the world didn't end because they successfully channeled teh enerjeez, and we're all a bunch of ungrateful doubters.

I don't mean to seem overly pessimistic, especially since I share anyone's pain who is tired of this doomsayer bullcrap, but in most likelihood, when it doesn't happen...a few things can occur...but really unfortunately I think the utter halt of people talking about doomsday won't end.

I forgot what incident this was, but there have been many proclaimed days of doom in the past. Y2k, and some of those incidents with that one preacher who kept claiming he knew when the rapture was. In the case of the latter, when they didn't happen, he kept claiming he made a miscalculation..and people believed him. When the 21st rolls around, there is going to be quite alot of people claiming there was a miscalculation somewhere, and they will just push the date backwards.

I for one am tired of all those stupid History and Science Channel programs talking about the 21st of this month..and when it doesn't happen...there are going to be more shows either explaining why it didn't happen, or explaining that it will happen soon..or something along those lines.

I think the point I'm making is that, it seems to have become a trend for humanity to try and predict their own destruction...almost as if we want it to happen. So when the 21st comes around and people realize it is a flop, I wouldn't be surprise if another date pops up...and then we will be hearing about that.

A return of face-palm images? I am pleased >:). On topic, this is really silly. I expect to see more news like this in the following days, and every time I will laugh. *H-H-H-HA-HA-HA!*

Good grief. When people say the world is ending on the 21st, I always assumed they were just joking.

You see what warning labels have done?! They have brought a plague of stupid people amongst us! People who would have long ago electrocuted themselves trying to make toast in the shower or something.
