Why are they so worried? I mean doesn't the world already end every-time the Gregorian calendar rolls over already? I mean every January first we have to restart the world but its not so bad.

Must be the generic most holy place in the area. I'd go to a church, but mountains are more pretty then most churches. Now I understand back in the day when people heard the Apocalypse was coming they were a bit more inclined to believe it because they couldn't fact check the claims (heck most of them couldn't even read), but this is the modern age people! We have scientist and historians who dedicate their lives to figuring this shit out. If the world really was about to end, at the very least a bunch of academics would be trying to hightail it to space.
Besides, we already know why the Mayan calendar ends at that date. It's their equivalent to "switching to metric" with a dash of "couldn't be arse to write down any more", which considering they left a record several thousand years in advance is rather farther than what modern people plan for. We're considered to be long-term thinkers if we have an RRSP for crying out loud. You really can't expect a society to have written out the calendar from their present date to actual end times, because that thing would have to be the size of Jupiter to fit all those notations.

I remember being something like 8 years old and watching Ghostbusters 2, and wondering where the psychic in the beginning got her ideas about 2012, because that was the first I had heard that date. It's funny being here now, and just laughing at the whole matter.

I have to admit, I'm neurotic and paranoid enough that hearing such a prediction does rattle me a little bit.... But at the same time it's just as well, I'm paralyzed to stop it anyway so it's of little consequence.
I'm almost positive nothing will happen though. Chance of the apocalypse is less then 10% at least.
