Dude got cornered by a guy with a pen.

Who is also in a wheelchair?

How the hell do you get yourself into that kind of situation, and decide that lethal force is the best course of action?
Because bullets are the answer to everything. No exceptions. Always. Moar. Dakka.

Fuck I dislike the police. Yes, the story is somewhat amusing in its absurdity, but the fact is that officer just murdered a guy and he isn't even going to serve any time.
Police and police in the US are two very, very different things.
Not really. Police everywhere tend to overreact to situations and falsely report situations to make it appear as though they were justified in using excessive force. I've seen plenty of peaceful protests escalate into violent ones because the police felt the need to start pepper spraying and attacking demonstrators who were doing nothing worse than shouting. The recent Muslim "riots" in Australia are one example. There's currently an inquiry looking into another incident in Australia where a man was killed by police which was taken to court when the version of events given by two paramedics on the scene clashed with the official police report. The police just cover each other's backs. If the paramedics hadn't been there it would have just been another unfortunate incident where a mentally ill man was killed after "attacking" police.

Assuming that that's what happened, well, if the guy could do that while in a wheelchair then he was pretty dangerous. Not that that's an excuse to shoot him, of course. Then again, we weren't there. And if wheelchair guy made it look like he had a gun or something, well, what are they supposed to do, say "He's in a wheelchair! He can't shoot people." or something? Urgh, I don't know, I just don't want to be one of those guys who assume that they know the situation much better than the actual people involved.
Dude hes in a wheelchair! How do you get cornered by someone in a wheelchair?! And why not use mace if your so threatened? (EVERY COP CARRIES IT NOW) How in the name of The One Holy God (YHWH) (JK <==atheist here) does a pen look like a gun? Mind you they where cornered! and that implies close proximity!

JUST STOP!

First off, this situation is much too weird to apply the "He's in a wheelchair. WHY?!" statement.
No its not with his limited mobility it makes the situation the cops got themselves into inexcusably stupid (and criminal negligent IMO).

For fuck's sake, I could take down a double amputee and I'm a scrawny 18 year old. You're telling me a train officer couldn't do this non-lethal?
What the fuck, seriously?
You sure about that? And what the fuck. Seriously? Talking about taking down amputees?
Okay, so, big shock, but the average amputee can't wrestle a fucking gator.
And about the whole taking down the disable thing... I'm not saying it's something I would go around doing for fun, but if push came to shove and I had to incapacitate a double amputee, I think I might have a chance.

Assuming the article's depiction of the events is accurate, the officer was not aware of the nature of the object, simply that it was metallic in nature. Off the top of my head, factors that could contribute to that include poor lighting and rapid motion of the hand holding it, either of which could make it difficult to determine, especially given the aforementioned metallic appearance of the pen. It certainly doesn't help matters that there are knives of a similar size (heck, I own knives that size) and the general shape is similar. The article also claims that the officer had been forced into tight quarters without an exit route and that the man was actively trying to stab him at the time. Mind you, even ignoring the potential for confusion, such action is not harmless. Was the guy dangerous enough to warrant lethal force? First instinct says it's unlikely, especially given the benefit of hindsight, but then, that's an advantage we have by virtue of only viewing the situation in retrospect rather than as it occured.

Damn I'm all for self defense but SERIOUSLY? Cornered by a dude in a fucking wheelchair and threatened with a pen? Christ, some cops really need to calm down and assess the situation. Wheelchair dude shouldn't have been threatening anyone and shame he died but holy crap this whole story. I think i'm done with the internet for today.

Couple of things that people seem to be missing:

The officer says that they only saw a metal object, not a pen, and that being said you can still do a lot of damage with a pen. Getting cornered by a guy in a wheelchair isnt as stupid as it sounds depending on room layouts, other people in the room, household objects, etc.

Im not saying fatal force was correct, but it is easy to sit in a room over a cup of tea/coffee & say what you should do, and discuss it, but when you are there, and the amputee is screaming at you and potentially armed with an unknown object - rash decisions can be made.

Sometimes it is the wrong decision, and those are the ones we hear about in the news.

When its the right one you hear nothing in the news.

Also how could two police officers not manage to disarm a double amputee? Something is afoot!
Clearly that is not the case. Otherwise he wouldn't be an amputee.

Edit: I seem to have got the wrong name when I hit quote. Not sure how that happened. Oh well.

I wonder if the cop aimed and fired at a blank spot nearby. Could That could have frightened the man into dropping his metal object? And then the two officers could have taken bin into custody with minimal pain? Would that have worked?

I know the police force is always out to defend themselves first, but I just wish they didn't use the same method everytime.

Good job officers, not many would have gotten out of that situation alive, but they held firm and with courage, defeated that grim foe armed with the most lethal of all weapons while sat in that pen-firing platform. I'm still surprised modern militaries don't arm their soldiers with pens.. who needs guns when you have pens?!

Give 'em a promotion.

Am I the only one who thought the threat was going to be something out of the Monte Python and Holy Grail?
