<a href=http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/66710809/double-fine-adventure>Double Fine is using Kickstarter to raise funds for a new videogame project. A point-and-click adventure game will be made over a six to eight month period, documented by 2 Player Productions. The target is $400,000 by March 13 at 8:00PM EDT.

Incentives for backing this project include a PC beta as well as the final game via Steam, the HD documentary and game soundtrack, a signed Double Fine Adventure poster, a portrait of YOU by the game's artist, a large original painting of the box art, and even lunch with Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert and a tour of the Double Fine studios if you've got ten grand to spare.

I really hope this turns out well. There is currently a total of $102,385 pledged with 1920 backers. Well what are you waiting for?! Back this project!

I'm never gonna watch the credits for this game. It's gonna be one huge ass list.
Yeah, I pledged money to this as soon as I'd watched their video about the project. Currently they are at 360 000, and this is only in a few hours. In another hour or so, the goal will be reached. Who knows what it'll be after the deadline is reached in 33 days. Ofcoarse the donations/pledges will be much less frequent after the goal has been reached and/or a week has gone by, but it will greatly exceed the original goal. I'm really happy about this. One can only wonder if part of an eventual psychonauts 2 will be funded in this way too? That would be rad.

Hopefully I can pull together a meagre $15 in spare change to donate to this project as I want in. Two adventure gaming legends working together once again on a point & click project completely free of publisher restraints or legal niggling?

YES!

I am so happy right now, so very very happy. Between this and the Psychonauts stuff Double Fine are set to forge ahead into legend! Even just that video for the kickstarter page was hilarious, I can't wait to see where things go from here.

Got no intrest in such games, but damn the thing is growing fast. Will any money, apart from the 400k, go to the games budget as well, or to cookies I wonder?

Huh, saw this exact same idea on the Dark Souls forum for funding the PC port.

And.... as of now they're already over $400,000 with 33 days still do go. This thing is happening! Within 9 hours of them putting the page up Double Fine has already met the required funding to make their game, now it's just a matter of seeing how much extra funding they can get.

No, no I'm not crying. Just, um, onions. Very happy onions that can't wait to see what happens next.

Point and click games > charity. Apparantly.

Pretty amazing how much this has raised in less than a day. Given the wild success of this kickstarter drive (assuming the game is released) i wouldnt be surprised if more and more studios start doing this.

So the man behind arguably the greatest point and click games ever made is asking fans for donations to make a new title? They're not just going to fund the game. They're going to provide enough funds to start a damn company all over and make up for all the losses Psychonauts unfortunately made. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if it hit the million mark.

Wow, I don't even play adventure games, but after watching that kick-starter, I wanna back them, if for no other reason, than to watch them make the game.

No offence Fluoxetine but you obviously don't know much about the costs of game development. The average wage for professional staff in the gaming industry can be anywhere from 30k a year for entry level positions to around 80k and up for experienced developers link meanwhile the average development time for a game is around a year for smaller projects and 3ish years for larger ones, not counting developers like Blizzard or Valve that tend to take 8+.

So presuming an XBL game had a staff of ten and it took them one year to make the game, not even counting added expenditures, you're looking at around half a million right there just to pay the people who made the thing (Which is in-line with what they're asking here, go figure!). Meanwhile 10 is about what you'd expect for a smallish XBL project, for major project some studios employ upwards of fifty to a hundred staff, you do the math. Not even counting the costs for hiring professional voice actors, the costs of renting any equipment you might need, and want a proper orchestral score or somesuch? There's a whole lot more money down the drain there. Then for proper retail release you've also got to take into accounting marketing, legal costs, production, shipping, etc as well as the development costs.

Games are expensive to make.

I played some Freesspace, came back and it'd gone up by over $200K. $460,344 as of now. Wow. It's great to see the community get behind this, even if it does mean my name in the credits will be surrounded by several thousand others.

I see people saying that this will probably inspire other developers to do the same, but I have to say, I don't think many could pull it off. Tim Schafer is one of a kind, with an incredible track record.

I think there are a few others who could manage it.

I think Sid Meier could get a million or 2 if he promised us a new Alpha Centauri. And Warren Spector probably could too.

Weee, it's happening. :-D

I guess when fans say they would like to see more point and click adventures, it's more than just empty words. That was some incredibly fast fund raising.

I think there are some niche markets that really has been starved badly for a long time. Traditional investors should pay attention.

I always thought the Pledge idea for bands was pretty cool, so it's good to see it coming together for games.
