I am trying to get into Doctor Who, but it feels like trying to jump into The Marvel universe. I feel overwhelmed.

This said, my brother explained the whole thing of the doctor's regenerations, and I became curious...

if, for whatever reason, The Doctor regenerated into a girl, would you still watch the show? What would be your general opinion?

Of course I'd still watch the show!
It'll be even more interesting now as the Doctor would have to get to grips with their new body. This would be a first time for them to actually have a female body but with the right writers and actor they could pull this off magnificently!

Or it could be a flop. All depends on the writing!

Absolutely I would still watch the show.
One of the things I like about Dr.Who is how new regenerations approach the character, and there's nothing exclusively male in that, or really to the Doctor's character.
I'd be irritated if it was mishandled, but done well I would barely bat an eye at it.

EDIT: I should also add it's totally canonically possible for the Doctor to become a woman.

There are rumors that the 12th Doctor will be a woman.

I think it'd be very interesting. But the general idea is that the majority of companions are female. Would that change? I don't know.

Hmmm, Dr. Who as a woman?

Yes I would watch it.

Now imagine the good doctor meeting the Daleks while on PMS.

I...funnily enough, haven't ever seen the Doctor as "a guy" but always only as "the Doctor".

So if he was turned into a woman, yet still staying "the Doctor". I'd be okay with it.

If, however, that would end up with her being "a woman" first before being "the Doctor", which I, knowing the modern entertainment industry, suspect is the most likely scenario to happen in such a case, then I would hiss and glare and tell people their show is bad and they should feel bad.

Well, I'd say there's nothing gender specific to his character either way. I'd be equally pissed off if he stopped being "the Doctor" first so he can be "a man" first instead. Women are just unlucky though that rare are the fiction artists who don't present them as being a woman before being anything else, even when that'd be fitting (as in here).

Brought to you by the same internet that said Eleven was going to be ginger.

Also, the Doctor was a woman once (17:30-ish).

And I don't care that it's non-canon comic relief, it is still a great episode!
Personally I'd much rather have a male Doctor with a spin-off Romana instead but I don't care much if he were to change sex. Although I'm not sure that can work, where is @TimeLord when you need him!

Well when The Doctor regened into Smith he grabbed his hair and say oh my god I'm a woman or something like that. Don't know if he was just digging at the hair though. I don't think they have said anything about that in the canon of the show.

I would still watch the show.

I think as long as they don't make it a point, it's okay. I think if they make him a woman, and then point that out every five minutes they'll really ruin the doctor, but if The Doctor is a woman, and that's just it, I think it'd be amazing. It wouldn't really change anything for his companions.

First off, if you feel overwhelmed, just watch the revived series like any other TV show, and you should be fine if you keep in the right order.

As for your question, I would definitely watch it with a girl Doctor because the Doctor's main personality traits are pretty much unisex. The only time I wouldn't keep watching would be if lady Doctor was just eye candy with no acting talent, but the show has found pretty ladies with a personality easily before, so that wouldn't be a big fear of mine.

She could also find yet another use for the sonic screwdriver...

Thats something I would love to see, but it probably wouldn't happen. I think there's been reference to time lords changing genders with a new regeneration, but at this point the show's fan base probably wouldn't welcome such a change. A great many didn't even want to see David Tennant go. And then when you think about how he's been a guy for the entirety of the longest running show on television it would seem odd for his final form to be female.

I think the best you could hope for is an episode where he gets gender swapped or meets a female version of himself in an alternate dimension. I know I'd watch it.

as for dr.who
its just power ragers but with time travel and one guy, seriously thats what it is.
I don't think she's having trouble with the premise, I think she's more concerned about the huge continuity.

If you want to compare it with the writing of Sarah Jane Smith and her "sonic lipstick" in The Sarah Jane Adventures, then I think we'll have no problem with a female Doctor. Like someone else aforementioned, his traits are pretty much unisex, and there's no reason to not break the mould, if only to try something different.

The better question is if his companions would remain female (and if, with some of them, they'd have an actual lesbian relationship, since the Doctor has in the past fallen in love with his companions - I think Rose was one of them), or they'd change them to male.

The Doctor said he knew a timelord called The Corsair who had male and female incarnations. So the possibility of Timelords changing sex upon regeneration is canon.

Anyway the Doctor is what good characters should be, not defined by sex. Assuming they didn't mess it up I would be down with a female Doctor. Then again they may be to scared to have the Doctor as anything other than a white male.

But that already exists, in a sense.

Seriously. It's like she's a copy of the Doctor, only a chick. And constantly PMSing.
