It?s the North Pole, it?s Christmas Day and you?re dying. "Who you gonna call?" No, not Ghostbusters but a red-clad, white-bearded fellow who can work miracles. This was the marvellously merry idea behind the Doctor Who Christmas special. Some great jokes, ?A horror film about aliens?? said the Doctor, aghast. ?That?s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.? Some clever references not just Ghostbusters and Alien but also The Matrix, The Shining, The Ring, Inception and Die Hard and Ghost. Enough festive fun for the younger viewers and some meat for the older viewers about is being the last Christmass. Ending nicely with the skeleton man and a girl in her nightie reunited

Another Spaced cast member in Who. Who's (get it) up for Frost/Pegg Doctor and campion. I would have Frost as the Dr and Pegg having to apologise for him all the time.

I would like to remind people that it the season of goodwill, so can we have a rest from Moffat is bad and its all about Clara. You have made your points x number of times before and saying it again won't actually change anything

I will obay your wishes and simply say that I loved Nick Frost as Santa and I too would love to see him as the Doctor but would settle for him as a companion, still as Santa just for an added twist.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas (or other holiday).

Not to shabby actually, not exactly full of twists and turns but at least interesting and internally consistent as far as I could tell. No huge bullshit twists either so that was surprising Clara wasn't even that annoying.

Frost as Santa would be good as a companion, "Three words Davros. My little pony". It could be a running gag when he reveals the Christmas presents of various villains.

So Clara will return. I'd heard rumors that Jenna Coleman was considering coming back for another season before this episode aired, and it's really obvious that the scene at the end was added later. It really did seem like the episode was supposed to end with eightysomething Clara having one last reunion with the Doctor.

I really really enjoyed this one. As far as I'm concerned, it's probably the best Christmas episode they did since the Christmas Carol with Michael Gambon. Lots of funny movie references, a clever use of Santa Claus that didn't go into the cheese factor like the Robin Hood episode did, and a really satisfying ending.

I for one do not hate Clara as a companion. I think that her interactions with Capaldi were the best she's ever done on the show. The problem wasn't her, it was fucking Danny Pink and his creepy obsessive stalker attitude. They had absolutely no chemistry with each other, even in this episode. But Coleman and Capaldi just click in a way she never did with Matt Smith. So I'm happy she's coming back without all the fucking Danny Pink baggage weighing her down.

Eh, I'm having a bit of trouble getting into Cabaldis version. He's a lot different than the previous ones.

Actually, he's sort of like a cross between the first and second Doctors: a grumbly old man with a touch of silliness about him.

I'm a fan of Clara as a companion and I'm glad she's sticking around (and looking forward to hopefully getting away from the forced love-triangle-but-not-really-a-love-triangle dynamic in Series 8)...but seeing that ending, the rumors that Jenna Coleman almost didn't return for Series 9 and changed her mind at the last second make all kinds of sense. The whole "last Christmas" thing would have carried a bit more weight if it actually had been their last Christmas together. The rest of the episode was pretty solid - the whole "dream logic doesn't make sense" thing early on was basically saying, "don't bother expecting this episode to make sense or have a hole-less plot, just sit back and enjoy the ride." And I did.

Also, it's a bit amusing that the son of the Doctor whose era was best known for enclosed-space horror episodes was the only one to die in an enclosed-space horror episode. (The old male "scientist" was played by Michael Troughton.)

I agree the new Doctor is a bit CRABBY. Ok I will leave now, I just couldn't resit it

I really enjoyed this one. Nick Frost was great as Santa, as expected, and did a great job of bringing comic relief to an otherwise quite frightening episode.

I get the feeling the ending was a last-minute rewrite, since I'm pretty sure I heard that Jenna Coleman was leaving the show after this season, though that appears to have changed. I think it's for the best this way; aside from the fact that Clara's a fantastic companion (yeah I said it, what?) the cheerful ending is far more in keeping with the nature of this episode.

Yeah It was a pretty good episode. I was a little surprised at the end to see that the real dreamcrabs looked like the ones in their dreams. I assumed the crabs had been created with that look by that one guy having the 'Alien' movie in his head, which is why it seemed the stages and the monsters seemed so Alien. I wasnt expecting them to point it out at the start, I loved how the Doctor got offended.

Eh, I wish Moffatt would stop with the endless "Don't _____".

I mean, sure, I can see why he'd want people not to think (snark snark) but it's getting tiresome.

Otherwise, decent ep, though started not badly. Have to wonder...that guy who didn't wake up, is the dream crab running around his house looking for another victim?

That was actually the best Capaldi episode yet (not that that's saying much and is actually a disservice to the episode). Pacing was good, atmosphere was tense and worked well, alien design was cool, Nick Frost /nailed/ it as Santa.

Quite probably. Essentially the inner-dream bit where Clara is amazed that the Doctor is not bothered about the Dream Crabs being on Earth ... that actually just happens at the very end, because they run off without resolving the issue.

Nonetheless, it was for an actually reasonably consistent episode, and probably one of the best Christmas episodes there's been (even admitting it wasn't very Christmassy).

who said those were real? the whole point of the episode was that you couldn't tell if you were awake or not, and there was a tangerine in the window at the end just like "Santa" gave as his "signature" present. I get the feeling that they didn't actually wake up.

Urgh, I was really hoping this was going to be Clara's last episode, I've never liked her character and this seemed like a good way to have a proper send off, but oh well, lets just hope next season is less about Clara's problems and more about almost anything else.

That gripe aside, I really liked the episode itself, since just the other day I had a dream within a dream and could relate to the whole "you never really know when your awake" thing.

They found a way to focus on the Clara/ Danny Pink romance, even after his death.

They will continue to find ways.

If the last one he removed isn't real then the doctor lost and had his brain eaten because he didn't escape the dream.
