"We were inspired by Kurosawa films! Kurosawa's Japanese, and so is anime!"

of course, the logical conclusion.
I kinda went full wat at that part. How do you go from Shichinin no Samurai to DA2? One is classic movie from the 50's that was fairly realistic, the other is a "game" from 2011 set in a fantastical world with no real life properties.

Look at "Archer" and tell me that it's for children. Come on, tell me.
I must confess that I have not seen Archer.

My point wasn't that every single western animated feature is made for children, but rather that a large amount of western animated films are kid-friendly. Especially so in the if we're talking about releases that go out to a large audience.

But a show released for children does not automatically make is mindless like the jackasses in the video were saying. Batman The Animated Series was made for kids, but it was still one of the most intelligently written shows of its time.

Is it strange that when I saw "Dragon Age 2 anime" I felt totally required to edit this image into being?

Is that.... Lelouch mixed with the dude from GITS mashed into Hawke's face?

No, it's Gendo Ikari [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gendo_Ikari] from Neon Genesis Evangelion [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion_(anime)]'s glasses and hands stuck onto Hawke's face.

Here [http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/the-gendo-pose] should explain.

The way I see it most anime try to be true depictions of the work their based on, at least until they catch up to the original work, then everything become a shit storm.

Western Products seem to be more design by committee and "ya it's good but it needs more _ for western a TV/Movie audience"; even though that is proven wrong constantly...

The biggest current western F*up for me is The Walking Dead, the show is horrible, the comic isn't great but at least it is original. The show is a generic piece of trash constantly trying play out some drama the producers feel was under whelming in the comic, only to fail horribly.

I think Carl shooting Shane in the beginning is far more interesting.

That said there are some exceptions, and Adult Swim has most of the current ones.

What was this about, Dragon Age 2 right.., meh it looks like cheap CG. I'll pass and watch Ben-to again.

So they wanted to make an anime out of Dragon Age, and they end up making an extremely wooden CGI movie...

Couldn't they have made something more akin to, oh I don't know, this:

Well, I'll still give it a shot. I doubt it'll be the worst animated thing I've ever seen.

Is that an OVA or a new series? Either way, looks way better than this shlock.

Though to be fair, the plastic look of the Dragon Age anime certainly matches the texture quality of the game.

Eh, I didn't have too much interest in the project from the beginning, though it looks OK.

I totally agree with the main beef about it though, I had the same one when I first saw the trailer.
It's occurred to me that the only reason western animation can't be respected as an adult medium; apart from comedies but there are a crapton of those so they don't count for this point; is because people aren't willing to give it a chance to be respected as an adult medium. For some reason there seems to be this cultural bias that has everyone believe only anime can do "mature animation", which I think is total bullshit. Anime is just a style of animation and, theoretically it's no more valid a style than any western styles when it comes to telling a story.

But, I digress. Movie looks decent; I'll probably catch it when it lands on Netflix. Interview inspired minor bout of animation centric nerd rage.

Maybe what he's getting at is that many western animated movies/series are geared mainly towards children?

I'll agree that it doesn't make any sense to look down on an animated feature because it's made in the western style.

About the trailer, I don't really like the art style. It looks very plastic to me.
.
Look at "Archer" and tell me that it's for children. Come on, tell me.
Or Renaissance 2015, or Titan A.E, or Batman: Under the Red Hood.

Bioware is talking out of their ass on this one.
.
Oh, crap, "Batman : Under the Red Hood" was marvelous.
Why won't they just look at these varied art styles and pick one which suits the atmosphere, damn it...
Cause Under the Red hood just like the rest of the DCAU titles, are Bruce Timms backed personal pet project, and since Timm has garnered DC and WB, with critical acclaim and cash up the wazooo, they let him free reign of Budget concerns and the whole reconstructed WB animation arm.

Which Ironically still uses Eastern Animation Companies.

In short, Bioware has nowhere near the resources and connections to make a project with UTRH animation and quality, so they opted for the cheaper aesteticm hiring an Eastern Studio that will do pretty good with Rock bottom prices.

For those who haven't heard or seen "vexille" mention in the interview
That film itself was abit so and so (the CGI was ok but I find certain event in the film questionable within context) but none the less I will give the Dragon Age anime a chance.

I think I want to punch someone right now.

"The great thing about anime is that it is well respected in the North American Community as a more adult form of animation."

So glad to see that people have so little faith in western animation that they feel the need to go anime to be taken seriously.

I don't have anything against anime, but I do have a beef with people who look down on Western products in comparison.
It isn't an anti western so much as a mind set that thinks anything foreign is more interesting and exhotic. In Japan and China people love western things for no reason too. They'll wear tee-shirts with slogans they can't read, just like people in the US get chinese characters tatooed on them.

Perhaps Bioware just wants to call it anime because they think people will take it more seriously that way. Still insulting.

I'm a huge fan of western animation and I fell out of love with anime around the time I signed my first rent lease.

... but let's be honest, guys, anime does tackle more adult subject matter than western animation does. Western animation is TYPICALLY at least 60% for children. Even darker properties try to appeal to kids on the side. Where anime is more for ... manchildren. If you could list all the Western animation that was made without any care for children in mind, it would be a pretty short list. Whereas with anime, it would be a lot longer. A lot of the titles on that list would still be ass, but they WOULD be less geared at children.

So I don't think that's an unfair claim.

I probably won't watch this because -- I don't like really anime, anymore. Also it looks sort of bad. That said, I think that this video has the people involved talking in a pretty mature and chill manner with a few unfortunate remarks. I think all the nerd kneejerk is a bit unneccessary.

But then, I liked DA2, so I guess my opinion is invalid.

Western animatino is only seen as for children because assholes like Bioware don't want to give it a chance. They work off of some predetermined bias that works off of the ASSUMPTION that western animation is only for children.

They diss western animation for not going places, but its their own damn fault because people aren't willing to let it go anywhere.
