Is it strange that when I saw "Dragon Age 2 anime" I felt totally required to edit this image into being?

I like Dragon Age but I'm a bit unsure about this. It doesn't look great and people keep telling me the people making it have a history of bad film, I don't know if thats true but it isn't really shaking the unease.
But is this another Bioware Hate thread? I thought those were done by now.

It doesn't look like anime. It looks like poorly rendered crap cranked out in a hurry to inevitably kill interest in what could have been an incredible franchise. Not quite an epic fail, but certainly trying to be.

Honestly.... This doesn't surprise me. At all. Nada.

Anyone who didn't see the writing on the wall, hasn't been paying attention.

Compare the visual style and animation from Dragon Age: Origins to Dragon Age 2. If you don't see the shift from Western to Japanese fantasy, you're probably trying not to.

Then you consider that BioWare commissioned [a href="http://www.dailyjoypad.co.uk/images/uploads/2011/09/prototype.jpg"]this[/a].

It becomes pretty clear that one of two things is at play here.

a. Someone very high up on the decision making chain at BioWare is really into anime.

or

b. Someone over at BioWare/EA is of the mindset that anime is too popular to ignore.

I stopped caring about Dragon Age 2 after 10 hrs playing it. I'm hoping Mass Effect 3 is still good, but my faith in BioWare's is steadily diminishing.

Oh boy.

Oh boy.

Wasn't one of the head writers or something on Dragon Age 2 someone that just screams "yaoi fangirl?"

For the fans of the original, this is going to rip open the wounds that are only just healing from Dragon Age 2's mediocrity.

EDIT: Or maybe, just maybe, it'll turn out to be another Baccano or Full Metal Alchemist instead of something as disastrous as, say, Elfen Lied.

EDIT 2: And the CG looks like ass. I don't hate CG when it's done right, but when done badly it looks like a fucking PS1 pre-rendered cutscene. And that's exactly what this looks like. It's bad. It's horrible. It needs to go to hell.
As an optimist and fan of Dragon Age 2, let me just put that "maybe" to rest, and say "I doubt it with every bone in my body" -_-'

The animation looks like ass. Really, you put it best. Like ass.

I'd put a picture of an ass next to a picture of the anime if it wouldn't be against forum rules. Hell, if it's a girl's ass, I may even enjoy that one more than this.

*sigh*

I love Dragon Age and DA2 but as a whole I'm glad I've never delved into the extended universe.

EDIT: And, really, as good as FMA? Even I know that wouldn't be possible, and I dislike anime in general (absolutely love FMA, though, I was gonna start another watch-through of it tonight :D)
Have you watched Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood? It is based more on the Manga, it is a bit longer, and the start of it is very similar to the start of the original but it's dub is just as top notch and the story is like 1000% times better. Though the original anime story is also very good (the movie was phenominal.)

Tried it. Bored me to tears. I prefer the original's tone, story, and writing far more.

Dear Bioware,

is Kurosawa.

Your thing is shitty CGI with shitty cel shading.

In regards to Kurosawa, they could have been talking about the style of cinematography, musical score/undertone or the general style and tone of story telling. You can't really get a feel for how the tone of the story, or how most of the shots are going to look by a thirty second trailer.

And from what they've said about the visual style (not the animation style) that they want, they chose people who had a lot of experience with that particular style.

Think of it this way, if you wanted to make a dialogue heavy, or character driven movie you'd want a director more like Tarentino or Scorsese rather than someone like Friedberg and Seltzer or Boll.

Not seeing anything in basically any Bioware game that reminds me of Kurosawa, least of all DA2. Unless I missed the part in Rashomon where two characters awkwardly snark at each other in shot reverse-shot, or the part in Yojimbo where Sanjuro teleports behind a dude and stabs him so hard he explodes.

I have the feeling that they decided that name-dropping Kurosawa in DA2 advertising (not just for this movie) was a good PR move because Kurosawa uses negative space for composition, and the DA2 team uses negative space because they ran out of time to put things in their environments.

most anime try to be true depictions of the work their based on.
and yet, they don't.
only 10 second in we see "somebody" run towards alot of ogre's (you know the big things that are hard to kill) and golems (WTF are they doing ON THE SURFACE together with the ogre's), just 2 or 3 would be hard to kill in the game with your party.
then later we see her jump more then 4 meters in the air (with full armor) and kill a ogre in one hit

we probably won't see any "true depictions of the work"

I didn't know cell shaded CGI was considered anime either.

OT: I will watch at least the first episode before I cry about this like it punched my Mommy...
Its going to be an OVA, not a series.

And?

OVAs divide into episodes too. Or did you mean to quote someone else perhaps?
No, I meant you. Most OVA's I've seen run closer to feature length films. I didn't realize that they could be divided into episodes. Thanks for the learning!

Anyways, this Dragon Age Feature is going to work like a straight to DVD film instead of a series of episodes. That's what I meant to say.

My we have a lot of people who've only been watching Magical Girl animes here :/
I've seen Vexille, and I can assure you it had no silly magic and was in fact a mech, so there was pretty much no magic to be seen anywhere, unless you consider nanobots magical.
The animation wasn't great I'll admit, but it was pretty decent.
I don't know exactly how to judge this, on the one hand I'm excited that there's a DA film in the works, on the other hand I've never seen a decent game-to-film adaption to date (nor the reverse), so if anything it'll be a good film in its own right, but will be raged at by fans by not being good enough, accurate enough, exactly how they imagined it or any combination thereof.
Here's a novel idea; let's see a proper trailer before we shoot it down in flames...?
Speaking of flames *raises her firewall*
This. Basically my response.
Seriously people. See a trailer before you judge the damn thing. This actually has me excited!!
