What's he complaining about?

Gay gamers get emo JRPG douchebag Fenris and whiney, insufferable Anders - straight dudes get cute, nerdy Merril and slutty Isabella with her ridiculous tits.

Seems like the straight males/lesbian females got the better deal here.
And in Dragon Age 1 we got Morrigan ^_^ Dont forget Morrigan =D with the possible side line of leli the biseuxal red head =P

I played this game as the girl hawk (rogue) still aint even done the deep roads section of the story and I got it on release day (preorder) so ... yeah.

Did notice the bisexual male elf in the brothel. Laughed when he said the male templar wouldnt sleep with him either.

Yes I used the option to hit on Anders and Fenris when they came up because I want the "have sex" achievement biowar puts into all its games lately but I also hit on Merril when the chance surfaced and if I can Im gonna make that elf squeal.

...

I think bioware is trying to hint that having sex is an achievement to gamers... possible nerd bashing...

Well played Bioware.... well played...

I did find that odd in ME 2, in the first game they allowed a Female Shepard to get with Liara, but maybe because she was alien and not human, and somehow that makes it different? Who knows. Either way though, Jack would of been a good "either way" character like you said, and it seemed a little odd she was only interested in men.
Liara is special since her race the Asari only have 1 gender if i remember correctly.

Shouldn't he be flattered that someone finds him attractive? Is he so uncomfortable with his own sexuality that he can't be around gay men without having his masculenity threatened?

He really got upset at a guy in a game (not even in real life) hitting on him? Chill out; it's a game. Hell if that happened to me, I'd find it funny and keep strollin', not nerdrage and get mad at the developer.

You know, I just thought of something...

Anders in Awakening gave a strong impression of being interested in the ladies. He tells you he was a bit of a player.

Then in-between games Anders is possessed by a demon...

And then in Dragon Age 2 he's openly bi-sexual...

Bioware....you've just dropped a bombshell of unfortunate implication....
Westboro Baptist Church would be proud :p

Who the hell's to say that everyone only plays RPGs to their sexuality and gender? I didn't realize there was a law that if you're straight male you're only allowed to play straight males in all your games.

A friend of mine has a female Hawke. His reason? He wanted his version of Hawke to be different from his main in DA:O, making the overarching story of the franchise a varied experience. He based his decision off of the story he wanted to craft, not a clone of himself in every game.

Erm...what? Somehow I don't think you're in any place to make that large a generalization, especially since "All straight males think gays should be locked in their closets" is just as hilariously ignorant a comment as what you asserted.
Yes, assuming you equate "all" and "in general" to mean the exact same thing. Which is kind of a linguistics issue, but sure. Yes, I'll go with that. Why not?

speaking of language issues....

I wouldn't be surprised, particularly, if people were seeing "flirting" in the same way they see "rubbing it in our faces."
What part of "this was written by one guy" wasn't clear? He didn't get people to sign a petition, or cite anyone's opinion but his own. Where do you get off assuming that he somehow represents a majority?
"People," of course, referring to a hypothetical body. This is hinted at by the word "if." The word directly before it, in fact. This is, perhaps, an indicator my intend was not to lambaste an entire population for feeling this way, but to suggest that people who do feel this way do so within specific constraints. It also stated "I wouldn't be surprised," not "these jerks only think this because."

"Hilariously" enough, you're twisting my words in a way that's every bit as dishonest as that which you are accusing me of. Stop. Just stop.

You don't have to like my statements, but it would be nice if you actually argued them, not some false imitation.

I always stay determined to make a gay character in the Dragon Age games, as it is really hard to find a game that allows or embraces homosexuality, yet I still ended up choosing Merrill because she is just too cute. So much for flamer Hawke, now it's just straight Hawke who likes to tease Anders and Fenris.
Ninja'd. I was going to make a gay guy Hawke but romanced Merril, and tried making a straight female Hawke but Fenris drove me to Isabella.

Okay, I know this is going to draw some flak, but I can kind of see where this guy was coming from. There really aren't any good romance choices for a straight, male Hawke. But then, there really aren't any good romance choices for a straight, female Hawke, or a gay, male Hawke, or a gay, female Hawke, or nay combination you wish, because all of your potential romance options have serious issues.

He makes several statements indicating clearly he's only into women in Awakening, if you ever paid attention (which I doubt you did).
Dialogue citation would help. Or alternatively, you can elaborate on how his first relationship with a man couldn't have possibly taken place between the canon-iffy events of Awakening and the first meeting with him in DA2.

cursedseishi said:
And if you have actually bothered to pay attention to DA 2, you'd have caught the retconning. Female Hawke? Karl was just a buddy. Male Hawke? Karl was his first butt-buddy. It helps that until DA 2, there was no Karl, which lets them change everything about the character at will, and with no dialogue with him besides the "tranquil", they ensure no inconsistencies pop up.
*facepalm*

Kinda missing the point. Like, completely. The quest involving Karl was to rescue him from the templar, and at no point in it were the details of their relationship clear.

Romance, however, is another issue altogether. If a male Hawke is flirting with him, gee, what a surprise: he mentions that Karl was the first man he'd had a relationship with. If a female Hawke is flirting with him, gasp! He doesn't mention that he's also into men! It's almost as if confirming himself as bisexual is only an issue if Hawke is trying to initiate a romance that would require that.

cursedseishi said:
And if you had bothered to read my post, the only real issue I had with him was when he forced me into a dialogue where it was either 2 heart options, or one heartbreak. Which oh, is why I'm not complaining about Fenris and his possible sexuality, because they don't shove it down your gullet. I could care less about the sexuality of some pixels, but when they start pushing it on me without provocation or showing interest (by not selecting the heart icons) they go for it anyway, yeah it annoys me. And it doesn't help that the game is a 5/10 buggy mess compared to a DA:O 8/10
Did you notice that nothing happens with either heart option if you haven't been flirting with him prior to that point? For someone who lambastes others for not paying attention, it seems like that's a big detail to miss.

I don't ever remember being hit on by Anders. I did always think the "flirt with Anders" lines were funny, only because the lines in the dialogue wheel were so corny. It made me chuckle a little bit.

The more pressing issue is that this guy gives video game enthusiasts everywhere a bad name. Freaking out because there is an option for homosexuality is just juvenile. Homosexuality exists, it's a thing, deal with it. There's no reason that homosexuals shouldn't be represented in video games.

Well, I read the post from the "ignorant" fool on the bioware forums and honestly he is not entirely wrong on one key point. The off/on switch. For me I find playing as a male and getting hit on by men offensive. By offensive I dont mean what people assume the word means that I think all homosexuals should be shot into the sun. I mean what the word actually means.

unpleasant or disagreeable to the sense
So getting hit on by Fenris and Anders offended my personal sensibilities. Its more like how the smell of a couch that has the aroma of wet dog, than I am personally insulted that they exist. I dont like it, but it can for the most part easily be ignored.

But I like the on/off switch. The OP is right from a development standpoint it really is not hard to code a switch that can block certain dialogs from being presented. And really it is a good idea. Hell take it a step further and have the ability to block off heterosexual context too while your at it. Or perhaps a 3 prong switch between Hetero/Bi/Homo.(perhaps make the default setting Bi which would run pretty much like the game does now) In all reality that would be a logical thing to include in Biowares flagship dating sim.

What I find to be not only offensive but out and out wrong is how far too often people seem to look at anything that does not accept (not tolerate, accept) homosexuality as an opportunity to lash out and insult people for the way they choose to live. It is fairly common (at least in net culture)when you see topics come up about homosexuality that if you express an idea that is anything other than not only tolerant but accepting, it makes you a hate filled ignorant moron that has wet dreams about the WBC. I am downright astonished by it because its insanely hypocritical.

Now as for the pandering to straight males. The way I am seeing it Straight males did sort of get shafted in DA2. The straight male options are rather limited. You get a choice between the geeky semi oblivious girl in Merrill, which is sort of a niche taste, Or you get Princess Skankerella which is an option that many straight males dont find appealing. There is no clear cut option, Nothing with more widespread qualities. It does genuinely seem like they just phoned in the straight male options this time around by giving us the choice of the merrygoround (everyone gets a turn) with boobs, or the awkward clueless girl. And while I have not persued a relationship with Fenris or Anders, From what I have been told from my best friend who has, is that they are both handled extremely well.

Anyway, I think the real problem here is not gay or straight, but the fact that Bioware and EA pushed this out entirely too early and did not give themselves the time to put the proper polish on the game as a whole, not just as it relates to relationships because just about ever facet of this game shows examples of where it needs to be refined and polished. (This is an example where a directors cut of a game would seriously be warranted)

I couldn't make it past:

Sure, there are a substantial amount of women who play video games, but they're usually gamers who play games like The Sims, rather than games like Dragon Age
Word soooo hard.

I really haven't had issues about wanting to be pounced on by all my companions. First game was Anders, now its Fenris. The idea of a straight only game actually annoys me. I wanted to try a lot of romances in ME2 that I couldn't as a girl, most specifically Tali. In Jade Empire I would bounce between Sky and the princess too. I refuse to believe I am endowed like some kind of god though and it is owed to me like that jerk off. If anything my complaint would be I don't find any of the characters particularly interesting. They all are too rough. I really liked Leliana in Origins and Alistair is my favorite character of all time. They had issues but it didn't leave them so bitter about the world. I get Fenris but he doesn't ever quit! At least Alistair stopped whining after a while.

Back to on topic, I'm glad Gaider verbally *****-smacked that guy.

Yeah this is my train of thought.

There is such thing as a heterosexual who has no problem flirting with another man.

This idea that puritanism is even remotely close to being rooted in biological reality has gotten so tiresome. I wish, especially in the states, we could pull away from it.

Anytime guys hug and they look like they are being forced to peel their own nails off their fingers it causes me to laugh and simultaneously depresses me.

It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so glaringly cultural.

As for the on-off switch.

If you don't like the games a company makes I would suggest not buying them. Especially now it is obvious that this sort of game design decision does not fit in with their goals or plans.

Equally so I doubt my constant petitions to get firearms and pizza added into the next mario game is unlikely to come to pass.

There are a trillion games on the market that don't have even an ounce of homosexuality in them, even most of the JRPG market panders more towards JPop artists (and I do enjoy the very homophobic attitude towards men in makeup that folks even in this thread appear to have).

But whatever, nothing's going to change either way. People who can't fathom alternate universes where there might be a pushy gay character and game designers who want to try something different aren't going to change their ways.

Okay. Then replace "all" with "most." It's just as insulting, only without the ability to belittle my word choice to squirm your way out.

No problem, then. Let's start over then, shall we? Here are your unaltered words:

Keep in mind that to the average straight male gamer, gays existing=TEH GHEYZ R RUBBING IT IN R FACEZ! PANIX!
Average inherently equates to majority. As such, you make the claim that most straight male gamers consider the very existence of homosexuals to be an affront to their own sexuality. I, in turn, say that such an assumption about such a diverse group isn't within your power to reasonably make, and is itself just as ignorant as the "no gays option" poster from the OP. What say you, good sir?

I quite like this, well done Mr. Gaider!

On the game itself, I find it quite funny that all romancable characters are bisexual. Many bi people always complain their sexuality isn't properly represented in media and entertainment, but here you go :D
