I'm wondering if Dragon Age is the right kind of game for me. I never really play RPGs and never was a huge fan of the fantasy settings. There are other games I'm looking to play, but I can't decide. What should I do?

See if there's a demo anywhere on the net. I think it's definately worth a try, even if you're not usually an RPG player. It's very immersive with some brilliant characters (And 2 really bloody annoying ones to listen to)

The combat ranges, depending on difficulty setting, from simple click-to-kill to frenzied micromanagement so if you're more of an RTS person give it a try too.

Other than that there's not much more I cna say other than it's worth the chance and if there's a demo about, use that.

I havn't passed the starting area yet but it already bored the shit out of me.
If someone can claim that the game gets better I might play it again.
Which origin did you choose? Some are boring but I was gripped by my initial choice of City Elf.

The story does get better except for one rather long and pretty repetative mission, but that does add a huge sense of accomplishment.

Uh... Some more details would be nice. Asking if you personally would like a game and giving us less then two lines of text saying your opinion on fantasy games gives me no good indication on whether you'd like it or not.

You answered your question right there.
You don't like fantasy settings and you don't have much experience with RPGs.
A fantasy RPG like Dragon Age will not be for you.
Play other games with genres and settings you like for now.
If you still have a desire to play Dragon Age after a few weeks or months, wait until it's cheaper in price.
If you don't like it after buying the game then it will not be a big waste of money.

BioWare are masters when it comes to building fully-realized worlds and showing us interesting and compelling characters. For those reasons alone, I recommend playing through Dragon Age: Origins: some of it might seem like standard fantasy fare, and, to be fair, that is what it is. But there are enough truly interesting nuances to the story and world that it was fully engaging to me.

Of course, if you are not a fan of Lord of the Rings-esque fantasy, then I really can't recommend it to you. Nor could I do so if you are not a fan of RPG's. If you aren't a fan of the setting or the style of game, then I would suggest spending your money on something else that you are more likely to enjoy.

But you should definitely try it. Rent it, borrow it from a friend, something. Just give it a shot. Then you can make the decision for yourself. The story is engaging and suitably epic and the gameplay, while not the best on the market, is acceptable enough not to detract from the experience.

My two cents.

You don;t the fantasy setting and you don't play many RPGs eh? Then why on earth are you looking at a Dark Fantasy RPG? Unless you have some weird Dark Fetish that rises above all of the others

You dismissed it in less than 15 minutes? Which origin did you pick?

Anyway, I found the game to be rather fun.
But since you're not really into RPGs, and don't like the fantasy setting while you have your eyes on different games, I advice to first look at the other games.

The game is a "dark fantasy RPG", that should tell you enough about the game if I am to base my advice on your information.

It reminded me a lot of Final Fantasy XII, a bit grittier, a bit darker and less modern technologies.

It's called trying new things. I used to hate FPS games but I gave Team Fortress 2 a try when it was released and now I love them, same with anime. If you don't think you like something try it. Three times is best; once to remove the fear of doing it, twice to work out how to do it and a third time to see if you like it.

Because he wants to try new things...?

well, the combat in dragon age is kinda throwing me off. It relies on stratigies instead of real time-action, something im more used to. i cant really find any stratigies besides flanking, so im still getting used to it. But so far, it is fun.

Alright, I already own it on the 360 (It was a gift). I do not have a PC capable of running it. I did not really care for Mass Effect. When other, more experienced, people began calling the game difficult, I started to wonder if I would have any kind of chance. I like story driven games, but I much prefer gameplay over it. The easier it is to simply get into the game, the better, a bad first impression isn't a deal breaker, but it hurts.

Best RPG of the last decade, it has amazing story and depth which alone demands a playthrough!

If you have the game you may aswell give it a go?

if you don't really like fantasy RPGs then its probably not the game for you, i happen to love it, getting ready to start my 3rd playthrough (done elf wizard and human rogue, now its time for a warrior of some sort, maybe dwarf). its a really good example of a bioware/black isle style RPG, lots of story, lots of neat NPCs but a little predictable. cpt oblivious is right about the combat, but alot depends on choosing a class style that fits you, i ripped through the game with my rogue quite easily, but i had a bit more trouble with my wizard.

The WRPG is a rare genre, Dragon Age is a step in the right direction and I want more games to play, so I'm going to be selfish and recommend the game to a complete stranger asking for advice.

Dragon Age is awesome! Buy today!

Ok one thing here, you better enjoy talking. If you've ever played Mass Effect, just remember the Citadel. There will be parts where you have quest after quest of talking. Im actually going to akin it to a KOTOR but from the middle ages of magic and kingdomes. Since it plays much like KOTOR, but sans the pausing everytime you see someone new. If you havn't played KOTOR OR Mass Effect, rent this game and see if it's for you.

All in all Im enjoying my experiences with it and actually excited and some of the moral situations of the game prove thought provoking to me.

I have one question about DA:O:
Is it true that the combat system is pretty close to the one in KotOR? If so, good, because I love KotOR.

Well, not that there's anything to be done about it. I em, bought it anyway...yeah, damn you Steam and your brilliant Christmas deals. That's the 3d game I buy already...
