Do you have a problem with dragons being the good guys? More often than not they are the villains, and I am not contesting that, as indeed they do make fine villains, but for some reason many of my friends seem to think there is something wrong with dragons being either the good guys or allies to the good guys. My one friend, a long time D&D DM and White Wolf storyteller, seems to believe that the metallic dragons shouldn't be in there. In his campaigns, you can pretty much assume anything that isn't one of the core races is evil, and even if it is neutral, it is still going to try to eat you. Not that there is anything wrong with that, as his campaigns are always fun. Then I have another friend who also thinks that good dragons are somehow inherently wrong. Dragonheart is in his words "nothing special" ok, nothing off about that, lots of people think that. But his reason for that being that it has a dragon as a good guy, while not necessarily wrong, just strikes me as odd.

(I did search through 2 pages, so if this has been done before, I apologize)
(Also, today marks one whole year here one the escapist for me. Woo! E-confetti!)

They're not the good guys or the bad guys. They are natures untamed forces and have no respect for itty bitty humans.

Dragons are awesome. I have no problem with dragons being the good guys, because Id rather have a giant fire breathing monster of legend on my side than Joe Shmoe.

Dragons are amazing whether good or bad, but if they are good then it can add a new layer of story telling

I love dragons, and hate the way that they always get killed by the protagonist who is generally an unplesant moron.

I'd say the alignment of the dragon should depend solely on the story. I've read good books with dragons in both roles.

You shouldn't judge books on what side of the story the dragon is on.

I'm sick of dragons being the goodies, and people turning into them and shit. I want something really old fashioned where the dragon just fucks up everyones shit. Set it on the moon.

That said, I've enjoyed a lot of fiction where the dragons are fairly cool guys, James Barclay's Raven series standing out (since everyone was morally ambiguous, be they dragon, zombie, or cute little pussy cat, no scratch that, the cat was A BASTARD)

You do make a very interesting point...

Oh Hannah, the state that you're in... Absinthe is obviously your weak point.

Personally I always view them as "bad guys".

I like stories where dragons are self aware and intelligent like humans, so whether they are evil or not is entirely up to them, just like for us.

There's nothing noble about squeezing desperate men. So yea, I like them as the good guys. Or at least the ones of moral dubiousness.

I wrote a short story for Power of the Pen when I was in highschool, and it was a story of a knight in shiny armor rescuing a fair maiden.... from the perspective of a dragon watching, and wanting to come help his friend.

Good guys is merely perspective... haha

Unless Mr. Shmoe was a dragonslayer.
