Dragons are awesome. I have no problem with dragons being the good guys, because Id rather have a giant fire breathing monster of legend on my side than Joe Shmoe.
Unless Mr. Shmoe was a dragonslayer.
What if Im a Shmoe slayer?

I like Dragons that work with whoever comes to them first. I like the intelligent dragons that use whoever they're working for to get what they want, so in a way they're villains, but they help out the people they're working for.

Good Dragons are fine, but due to their disrespect to the lesser races (In there eyes atleast) they rarely take sides.

It depends on the dragon.
If it's some 50 foot high, farm animal munching tank of destruction, it's not gonna pull off "good" very well. If it's a little lizard that goes around befriending butterflies, it won't be terrorising many villagers any time soon.
Personally, I prefer the tanks of destruction. Dragons should behave like any other creature, so when you see a gecko fighting for the greater good, let me know and I'll change my opinion.

If it's a dragon capable of sentient thought then it should have reason, which it could use to decide moral boundaries for itself. So dragons that are "good" by human terms wouldn't be unreasonable. I think sentient animals usually have a sense of nobility that you just can't get with humans, well, without said human looking ridiculous anyway.

If it's not...then it's like a damn dog, no good or evil.

I'd say the alignment of the dragon should depend solely on the story. I've read good books with dragons in both roles.

You shouldn't judge books on what side of the story the dragon is on.
Good point, the dragon's views (assuming an intelligent dragon here) should fit what the story needs. While my favorite movie is Dragonheart, I also like stories where the dragons are pure evil, (Dragonslayer) or are simply animals that happen to be the antagonists (Reign of Fire)(ok stop laughing!)

I'd like to direct to you the Breath of Fire books by E.E. Knight.
I will definitely look into them, and maybe the Dragonlance books as well.

When I run a game I prefer my dragons to be amoral, distant, and a little hard to understand. At their core they aren't people, and they have such long lifespans that their brand of perspective would be a little hard to grasp for most folks. They might help you, but that doesn't mean that they're on your side.. it means that here, now, you happen to be on theirs.

Heh, also.. not going to lie OP, but between your user name and choice of subject ... you seem a little dragon-happy.

After reading the works of Knaak, the less dragons in my stories the better.

The Draconomicon from Dungeon and Dragons 3.5 rules is the best Dragon book ever written. If anyone wants to run Dragons of any sort in just about any game that book is the one to get. Good or evil Dragons are above us as we are just little short lived humans.

Being a D&D player, I have run into both. I don't really have a preference, though I do enjoy the aspect of intelligence that D&D dragons have. Managed to save the partys butt several times thanks to the quick talking rogue.

The simple problem is that your friends do not play Spyro enough. Once hit with the initial dose of that small, purple dragon and you would have no problems with whichever side dragons choose to be on. Though they may gain a hatred of dragonflies.

E.E. Knight wrote some nice dragon books. I am about to read the fourth in the series. Dragon Strike, I think it was called.

I like them either way...in Reign of Fire they made awesome villians, in Dragonheart they made awesome good guys (well more like guy).
It all depends on the telling of the story, in acient legends, dragons where always fierce bastards, who didn´t treat humans as the god given sacred race they like to be treated as (and no human likes NOT being treated that way) so they seek out to destroy said dragon.
If you try to get more into it, the dragons point of view could be very interestingly told, and maybe become a tragic tale of a missunderstood creature and so on and so forth.

What i really loathe are these artistic "what if" point of views. They could be considered the "neutral" aspect.
I remember one BBC documentation about Dragons ending with an awesome cliffhanger.
And yes, it WAS a documentation. They pulled it off quite nicely.

The general Plot was some geologists find the sceleton of a winged creature that is unknown to them, so they call in some investigators, and soon the theme of dragons is pulled up.
Everyone is like "NO WAI!" and then try to disprove this sceleton to belong to a dragon.
They come up with quite alot of reasons...it couldn´t possibly fly, it was too weak for it´s wings to carry, the wings where weak and looked like they couldn´t work for shite, the Bonestructure was weak.
Then they found out it was a female dragon but don´t find any resonable level of hormones in the remains that should have been there if it went through puberty.
Then they go back to the place it was found and find a second, way larger sceleton and come up with the idea that what they found was mearly a youngster.
Then they find human sceletons in medival armor and the tip of a spear in the larger sceleton, and "reconstruct" what might have happened in that cave in the 11th century.

It also brought up nice theories about why western dragons look so unequal to eastern ones and how they could breath fire (No magic, their explaination was that dragons could have used gasses generated by digesting and local stones on their teeth to ignite a firestream. They would bite on the stonepowder left on their teeth to generate a spark, which would ignite the gasses, quite interessting) and such.

Heh, i chuckled.

OT: I think dragons should be allowed to be what ever the fuck they want. They're fucking dragons. If the dragons wish to help you, BE THANKFUL. If they wanna eat you, stay away from them.....

Bah...

'good guys'? 'bad guys'?

The hell with it, I like my dragons anti-hero style.

Really badass you know, top of the food chain, controlled by on one, the goal justifies the means.
Morally gray resulting in doing more or less the right thing, but through dragon-worthy means of fire, ice and acid!

Not quite 'the good guy', but still way better than all the other corrupted cretins.

Oh, they have to be western dragons, preferably no wyrms, wyverns, fairie dragons or eastern dragons. I could live with a pernese dragon though...
