I thoroughly played and enjoyed DD
A on the 360, what must be two years ago or so by now. An open-world fantasy game that was a cross between Skyrim (sandbox, adventuring, companions) and Dark Souls (challenging monsters and boss fights and errr....darkness!). I and many others lamented the lack of a PC version and the firm "Not happening" from Capcom.
Fast forward till today and I have the PC version installed and working...and even managed to convert my 360 save so it's the same character and progress. Now I've slammed Capcom as much as the next man...they've made some really shitty business decisions over the years, along with releasing awful PC ports, often of sub-par console games. But bringing DD
A to PC was a great move...even if it is a couple of years late.
I haven't spent a great deal of time with it as of yet, just enough to get a feel for the gameplay and remember the controls. First, everything from the Dark Arisen version of the game is there. Everything. Second, it's running at 60FPS...it looks so weird to see it. It's so much smoother and crisper that it almost looks like a different game. The graphics are fine and it has a host of customisable options, including full keyboard/mouse mapping.
But then I was surprised to find some really nice touches. The first and most important, an FoV slider. This single feature can probably be used as the gage between a good port and a bad port (the presence thereof). It is most welcome and frankly, I wasn't holding out a hope that it would be there. Second, there's an option to disable Pawn chatter. Arguably, some "in between" options would have been okay too, but even just a binary on/off is great. No more "Go for the tail!" and other nonsense...it got so bad on the 360, I threw my pawn into the Brine just to make her stop talking.
Slightly disappointingly, but unsurprisingly, the so called "Hard Mode" is the same disaster it was on the 360. It, along with NG+ just weren't thought out well. There is no scaling of any kind, NG+ is precisely the same as the first playthru, except that the player is level 100 with great gear, so everything is too easy. Hard Mode just makes the player use more stamina, which makes combat a chore, and more damage...but badly implemented. It's a flat damage increase to everything which means tough bosses and monsters are barely any more powerful, while the lowliest creatures can now two shot a player with cheap, unavoidable hits. Not to mention Hard Mode gives double experience and discipline points and heaps of gold and rift crystals...all of which make the game easier, not harder. Oh, and Pawns get no penalties in Hard Mode at all, so your main pawn basically just levels at double speed. A shame; I'd even take Oblivion style crazy scaling over the complete lack of it in DD
A.
Has anyone else been playing it, or bought it? What are your thoughts on the game or the port of it? Did you enjoy the original? Hopefully, now it's on PC maybe there will be some enterprising modders who can add more content, challenge or whatever
