Is this true? Or is this a hoax? I mean, it's just a YouTube page but seriously, if this is true. Holy shit then...

From the little bit of bored Googling done in the last 2 minutes, it seems very unlikely it is true.

I am not sure if it's a hoax per se, that would imply some effort to make it believable, is there any evidence of that?

As it stands though, there is no "DreamCast 2" coming out in 2009. If Sega were going to try and return to the console marketplace there would be much more media about it (from mainstream gaming news sources) and we would have this information like two or three years before the console's release.

They are not bad amateur commercials, maybe portfolio pieces? But they are not of the production quality that would be demanded of a product release like this. I mean... the whole growly voice "I will return" kinda nineties styled.

I seriously doubt it could compete with three well established next-gen consoles. Sega could do a hand-held though. Maybe then they would go back to making sonic games that dont suck.

oh and this is from about a year ago.

I say most unlikely even though he says it may release in 2012, but it would be interesting to be able to choose out of 4 consoles!

I'd buy it. The Dreamcast was an outstanding system up until they pulled out of the race. late 2009 would be pretty good timing too - the XBox 360 would start seeming dated, the Wii's controller scheme's shock value would have worn off, and the PS3... well, the PS3 has been a fairly lame duck so far, but it might pull a late upset like the PS2 did. Whether or not I'd be excited about it, however, is yet to be determined. I'd need to see the feature set.

Of course, if all this Dreamcast 2 hype is misplaced, a hearty "never mind" for all this.

a late upset like the PS2 did?

The PS2 took off running and didn't stop until almost a year after the 360 launched

in fact, Sega was banking on the Sony's inability to keep up with demand with the PS2's launch to make up some of the sales they needed to keep the Dreamcast afloat.. Didn't work though, people decided they'd rather wait for a PS2 rather then pick up a Dreamcast.

That's not saying anything specifically against the Dreamcast, but goes to show that Sega's name was worth nothing.. they released a new system every year or two for about 7 years, pissed off developers and people who bought their systems.

Anyway, it would be interesting to see if Sega could actually put up a good system with a good catalog of games.

I'm not holding my breath, most of the big game publishers probably aren't too keen to work with them, even now.

Supposedly, they are going to announce it officialy in 2009. Either at E3, or on the 9th of the 9th, ten years after the Dreamcast came out.
That I could believe, but I still doubt it, add to the reasons you gave, the sheer global economic situation is not conducive to entering the console "arena".

It is improbable. I never owned any of Sega's consoles so I need someone to explain to me why anyone should care. It is officially 2009 and the Wii appears to have a firm grasp on the hardware market so I feel comfortable saying that if it did come into existence it would fail.

when you put it like that, it actually makes me more inclined then ever that Sega would do it

Just because Sega is a case study in missing the point and making bullheaded moves with their hardware.

Yeah yeah, cool your jets.

What I meant by that is I seem to recall the launch price was considered quite daunting for consoles of the time. Later, it cooled down enough that it was able to pick up and become the dominant system.

However, in my attempts to substantiate that, I've only found a $300 price. Funny, I thought it was higher. Maybe back then $300 for a console was unheard of.

In any case, if you're telling me that there is no rainbow coming after launch, things are looking even more bleak for the PS3 than I said. Granted, there is one ray of hope for the PS3, and that's how BluRay won the nextgen drive war, giving the PS3's price point a bit of viability next to a BluRay player that wasn't there at launch.

My main point was just that the PS2 was a resounding success from the moment it was released.

Prices were expensive for the PS2 just cause they were rare in the states when it was first released. Sony couldn't keep up with demand, and the price skyrocketed. Mine cost 600 CAD.

There are two 'Dreamcast 2's available right now.

The Xbox 360
The Wii

The 360 has a hell of a lot in common with the Dreamcast but most obviously in terms of the advancement of what the Dreamcast offered technology wise.

The Wii seems to have Segas full attention in regards software.
