Hey,

I will probably be buying a DS lite from a friend this week (useful on the train and bus to and from uni and such) and was wondering about the escapists choice in games.

I'm a strategy fan, but looking for some roleplaying games, a bit of everything really, but I don't like the 'casual' games, wario ware, nintendogs etc

This will be my first Nintendo console.

Thanks!

Methinks Ryan has missed the point...Sims 3 and Toy Story 3 are as casual as they come.

For non-casual DS games, I'd recommend:
- Final Fantasy Tactics A2
- Fire Emblem
- the Advance Wars games
- Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution
- SimCity DS
- Disgaea DS

...Metroidvania is the best answer I can give you, aside from the remake of Final Fantasy IV.
so...

Disgaea DS, the Pokemon series and the Fire Emblem games.

All are RPGs, and I can't think of any non-RPG non-casual games.

There are a handful of games you could get --though I haven't played a whole lot on the DS -- but I just picked up FF3, which is obviously an RPG, and so far it's a lot of fun, so you might wanna look out for that. My friend recommended me Golden Sun (also an RPG), though I haven't tried it yet, it's got pretty good reviews so I say you check it out.

I really disliked the art direction they decided to take when graduating FE from GBA to DS, but it was still a decent game.

Castlevania series. (Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia)
Professor Layton series.
Ace Attorney series.
Megaman Zero Collection (4 GBA games in DS Cart)
I'm having a bit of fun with Golden Sun: Dark Dawn though it's a bit easy.
Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier. One of the better JRPGs I've played for the DS.
The World Ends With You.

Gotta get yourself some Dementium: The Ward.

It's a horror game set in a hospital, it's quite good.

And there's a sequel, which is apparently even better than the first. So that's good.

Disgaea DS.

Pokemon games, at least where I live, are highly competitive.

Fucking Pokemon man! One of the best RPGs you'll find on the DS by far. If you wanna get one, I'd recommend Heart Gold/Soul Silver, since they're remakes of probably the best additions to the franchise.
But yeah, I've been playing my copy of Soul Silver for ages and I've got way over 100 hours of gameplay out of it.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey and Devil Survivor. The first one is an excellent First person role playing game with tons of demons to use in your party. DEvil Survivor is an excellent SRPG with again tons of demons to summon and possibly one the darkest atmospheres I've seen in a game in a while.

Make Dragon Quest 9 your first priority. It's the only game that gives you not only tonnes of options but an actual reason to use most of them, and one of only a few written works to merge wit and emotion so well. While you're at it, also pick up anything by Atlus if that's you're sort of thing, because as far as I can tell, they're the only people making old-style RPGs, like on early PCs, and doing it well.

But seriously, what do people like so much about The World Ends With You? It's repetitive, everything outside the main battles is completely arbitrary, and the story, while vaguely compelling, isn't moving in the slightest.

I agree, it is quite good. The sequel is better than the first (mainly because they updated and added some features)

OT: If your into sci-fi FPS's, you could consider Moon, it's rather good and it's made by the same developers as Dementium.

For strategy, try the Age Of Empire games on the DS. They are very different from all the other Strategy games on there, and are a heck of a lot of fun.

Of course, the Advanced Wars series is an excellent choice as well. I havent played the DS Fire Emblems, but if they're as good as the DS ones they'd be an awesome choice as well
