If you haven't heard already there is a new reiteration of the DS on it's way called the DSi that will arrive next year.

The DSi's features include:
bigger screens, music playback, SD slot (no GBA slot), 0.3 megapixel camera, downloadable content, thinner shape, built in internet browser.

While I like everyone else was clamouring for a multimedia DS in it's next re-design, I can't help feeling a bit like Switch: Not like this!

I feel this isn't a step to enhance gaming experience but more of an appeal to non-gamers to buy the DS because it's also a Camera/Music Player/Coffee-maker.
If they really needed tips on implimenting decent features they need look no further than the homebrew community who are still doing it a lot better than the professionals.

I'm pretty disappointed and underwhelmed, the only reason I would abandon my perfectly fine DS Lite is for the music player but that's it.

What's everyone elses view on this?

My topic is asking for feelings and reactions, his topic is just a statement on the new DSi.

The DSi will be a DS 1.5, just like the DS itself was a GBA 1.5

Not necessarily a bad thing. We'll see how this'll turn out.

While I agree with the first half of your statement, what the heck are you talking about on the second part? The DS was a huge advance from the GBA. Wireless, multiplayer singlecart support, 3D rendering, obviously duel screens, a touchscreen, all of this was new to the system from the 2D pixelwork of the GBA. I love the GBA, and I enjoy the DS, but really saying the DS was just a GBA 1.5 is ridiculous.

wow, Nintendo keep making upgrades, if you want a camera / multi-media player then get a good MP3, instead of buying yet another update (this is the 3rd one) of a decent hand-held (but seriously, how many people only play on them when they go on holiday - I know I do)

I wont be buying, NO GUITAR HERO SUPPORT!
That was the first thing that came to my mind too.

Funny how "upgrade" now means "attach more crap to it."

Just make it a cell phone, already...

And .3 megapixels?!? What kind of crap is that? My $10 webcam POS from 2003 is better than that!

No GBA support does not sit well with me. One reason why I thought the DS was pretty good and why some people should buy it is because of the backwards compatibility. way to take that away. It's not a truly terrible thing, but that was one of the PRO's I saw to the DS. All the new features are great, but now it seems to slowly turn into a PSP when I read that with all the gadgets and all. Again, not a bad thing, but I always saw nintendo as to stick to ONLY games.

The DSi is to the DS as the GBmicro was to the Gameboy advance.
(i think that makes sense...)
I'll keep my navy DS lite for as long as i can. hell, i still have my brick gameboy somewhere with pokemon yellow.

Im pretty sure (as in, 100% sure) that the new DSi has in fact 2 cameras, one on the interior of the DS (so can be used much like a webcam while the DS is open, which is 0.3 Megapixels) and one on the exterior, which is meant to be a more conventional camera at 3 megapixels.

OK, I call it: BS. (I know that sounds harsh, you have a fine thread and registered a fine opinion of which I take a completely different stance)

This DS is a lot more than "just another DS iteration". While it does not represent the major design shift that the move from the gameboy line to the ds line represented, this is definitely a Gameboy to Gameboy SP shift.

More unit power will mean more games and more power dedicated to those games (so maybe galaxies won't start chugging when more than 200 enemies hit the screen)

the built in camera is painting the way for visual response games (like that expression recognition title that would require a camera peripheral for the DS, no I don't remember titles or details, google it) and makes user game creation options much more feasible (take a pcture and the game builds a level little big planet style for you, how awesome is that?)

The advancement in the microphone will mean better pitch recognition and more advanced use of this feature (no more shout or blow into the microphone to make stuff happen limitations)

The online and memory storage capabilities will mean more content is more accessible and cheaper. and open up the doors for unique game-types. Maybe we will finally begin to see a GPS title or a game that starts using some of the epic server side world recreation software that is beginning to pop up so our shooters in parisian neighbourhoods can actually take place in parisian neighbourhoods.

Maybe it is because I am a game designer that I see all the awesome possibilities that the DSi opens up, and yes it is up to game publishers, most of whom would much rather release the next Fantastic Four video game in lieu of trying anything new and exciting. But, look at what the Wii has done for console control (none of which is being used for appealing to a core gaming audience, but what if it were?) look at the possibilities that exist in the iPhone.

And, I guarantee that anyone who is a gameboy player, disappointed or not, will be purchasing one at some point. 1. It will be better than the DS ad 2. How long after the DSi release do you think Nintendo will continue to ship Lites?

Considering my DS is a beaten-up hunk of twisted plastic and I'm forced to rely on my brother's Lite to play any DS games, I welcome this DSi most enthusiastically. The no GBA support does hurt, but I can look past that for all the new features (and undoubtedly new games) that it brings (will bring).

My only real problem isn't that I can't play games with the GBA slot (I have a GB Micro), but the simple fact that the lack of a GBA slot means I can't use my GH controller or my Arkanoid paddle with it.

So, unless they come up with a way of using those, no buy.

Shame, since it seemed like an incentive to upgrade my DS Phat.
