I am still convinced that this is an attempt at a marketing gimmick.

What I think they did is make two versions of the game: a good one (Health packs, Duke can carry a armory) and a bad one (regen health, two weapon limit), and give the bad ones the Australians first. They then leaked their own game to the torrent sites (the ?bad? version), so people write it off.

Then, when the American release comes out, it will be such a shocker that it will generate so much buzz that it will make tons of money. Then shortly thereafter, they patch the game for all the people with the "bad" version.

Think about it: this is just the sort of thing Gearbox would do

Either that, or I am just crazy. I did reccently go off my Anti-ADD meds after talking about it with my Psychiatrist

Anyways, I doubt I will be getting this game. It started development when I was four, and I never really liked Duke. Something about him just annoyed me.

I never played a Duke Nukem game before (and old enough to have played them all, XBLA notwithstanding), so this sounds like little more than simple word-of-mouth to me. Could you be entirely accurate? Of course. Could you be entirely inaccurate? Of course again.

However, my expectations weren't very high when I was playing the demo, so that might have been an advantage there. But I dunno... I'll wait and see what happens.

- Yes, there is a 2-weapon limit. Although you also get pipe bombs, trip mines and Halo-style melee on top of that.
- Yes, there is rapidly regenerating health.
- Yes, you will be using cover on a fairly regular basis. At least on medium difficulty.
- Yes, the vehicles control like arse.
- Yes, the mighty boot is gone. You can only kick enemies during scripted finisher animations.
- Yes, movement speed is fairly slow. You can sprint for a limited time. After a few seconds, Duke starts gasping like an asthmatic.
- Yes, You frequently have to mash a prompted button to open doors or finish off stunned enemies.
- Yes, you die fairly easily. Some non-boss enemies will finish you in three hits.
Why am I getting the distinct feeling that Borderlands was a better Duke Nukem game than DN:F will be?

More like 1-2. Ridiculous!
I've been playing it all day, very disappointed. I haven't gotten far along yet to make a definite opinion, but I have a bad feeling. How much more is it after the hive?
I'd say that it's still good, but that's with my extremely low expectations on FPSs already. Anybody tried multiplayer yet, I haven't been arsed.
I played it on hard, and I wouldn't say you have to take cover, it's more run and hide like a little girl.
All of the time playing it I've longed to inFamous 2, but that may be on inFamous' merit and not Duke's.

If you take it purely on its own basis, it's not a bad game. It looks awful, the optimizing is the worst I've ever seen (minutes of load time every time you die!!) but the gameplay itself is fast moving (excluding stupid hikes between fights and platforming and physics puzzle sections :O), paced and challenging. Am I the only one with this opinion?

I feel sorry for people I know who were looking so forward to it. Take that Bobby Drake, I'll stick to my Serious Sam HD and upcoming Serious Sam 3 thanks, but you have fun with your Call of Duty-ified alien shooter.

Are people REALLY surprised at this?!

Was there REALLY any hope that a fourteen-year-old game would be anything more than terrible as a mark of how idiotic its production cycle was???!

I was never really expecting into to be insanely good or something. I am sad that I will only be able to hold two guns at a time, but whatever. It seems everyone had their expectations set too high for a game that has been in development since the late 90s. I'm just glad I get to play the character that I grew up with when I was a kid.

I hoped that a game 14 years old wouldnt suffer from all the BAD modern fps tropes...I could take a bad game that was...what this game was supposed to be.

This his how I feel. Look on the bright side though people, at least it finally came out.

So Yahtzee was right. Damn.

I think it would have been better if it didn't come out. If it comes out but sucks then there is very little chance for it to be done again the right way.

As far as I am concerned, The Duke was, and still is dead. Only now, I can't see him resting peacefully. :( :( :(
Yahtzee should review it :D

Really the whole running-for-cover thing isn't Duke. Duke is supposed to be portrayed as an unstoppable badass, not some git who gets tired and needs a breather every 30 seconds.

The man can bench 600 pounds and starts puffing like an asthmatic after such a short sprint? Get the fuck out.

I don't think the Duke is dead, but he's not aged well. I do agree with the OP and the general sentiment of this thread.

DNF is a bargain bin purchase for me, as it'll probably be a bit of a laugh, but it's not worth the full price.

Eh, I figured that's what it was going to be; 2k Games bought the rights and put forth a hackeyed effort to make a quick buck on the most infamous game in the last 20 years.

What did you expect? They would have had to start from scratch yet again if they wanted to impress. No, the only thing that interests me is what 2k does with Duke franchise now that they own it.

What game with trouble production history with their feet stuck in another era tend to be crummy? I would have never guessed

Bum deal, it's unfortunate that they can't even make one good game in 14 years. These devs/managers need a different job obviously, or they at least need to not be in the key positions they were in.

Seriously, people are expecting way too much out of this game. Of course it won't live up to the 14 year hype. Anyone hyping it really needs to calm down and realize there is no possible way that it's going to match up to anything these days. It needs to live up to Duke standards and from what I've seen of the game, it does.
I think most peoples' expectations of this game are pretty damn low (which possibly explains the perplexingly large number of people actually enjoying it). Hell, back when I actually cared about this game (which was so long ago I can't even remember) I just wanted something that remained true to the spirit of DN3D. From what I've seen of gameplay footage (of the full version, not the demo [http://www.youtube.com/user/TehhFROSTY]), I can't help but conclude that the game is utterly bereft of said spirit (on a gameplay level, at the very least. Sure, Duke still spouts one-liners, but Jon St. John's delivery seems flat and unemotional to me). If they decide to make the demo available to the general public (which they don't seem to have done on Steam yet, despite release date ticking over) I'll give it a look-see for old time's sake, but I can't see myself picking this up, even on special.

Hahaha. :) A person named "Grim"Heaper puts a smile back on my face. Maybe this game can be entertaining.
