Not quite what things look like (at all) but awesome nonetheless. Mostly unrelated point: Have you read Start of Darkness? I loved that book...

"Do call me Mavryck," he said. "I suppose you'd have told me your name already if introductions were to take place, but instead I'll ask a less personal question; how many of you are there? I recalled seeing some arrows, but I cannot see their bows. And you might imagine the confusion that results in." He prodded a dead cultist and giggled a bit as it's jaw snapped off.

Semong stared at the demented Mavryck, ignoring the screams and groans of dying cultists. His hands began shivering - Semong hoped because of the rain. Needing to hide the shivers anyway- Semong knew from long experience that weakness among thieves and murderers was worse than blood to a shark- he began silencing the cultists. He didn't enjoy the job but it was the best excuse to keep moving.
I can work with crooks, but crazies? I'm getting over my head - and I'm already pretty short!
"Mavryck Harvester...that's not the name you were born with, was it? Or did your parents have a sense of humour?"

Hah! Good art, reminicent of Order of the Stick. I think it's night at the moment, though.

Zem had watched with narrowed eyes as the laughing man killed all the cultists. A dark cleric of Nerull, after the same prize as they were? He listened to the man babble for a moment, then went off in search of his spear. He found it wedged between two rocks. The sourcerer hefted his spear and stared at the gleaming edge.

He gave his reflection in the blade a mirthless grin. Annoying, and definately dangerous was this dark cleric, but perhaps he could prove useful. And if not...a swift blade to the back had a way of solving problems. He turned, straightened his clothes, and began making his way back to the charred alter.

Varstl, back at the gate, begins re-loading his supplies. Self-consciously, he sheaths his shortsword into a pocket in his vest; he trusts anyone involved with death gods about as far as a crossbow bolt could stick into their back. Still, an adventuring party is an adventuring party, and at least a token amount of trust is necessary.

"There are five of us, I believe," he says. "With you it makes six. I must warn you, 'Mavryck', that this is a contracted job, and that I am a professional." The Dwarf moves closer to the Cleric to emphasize his point. "No games. No motives. No hilarious double-crosses. Funny business will not be tolerated." He offers his hand to Mavryck. "Varstl Silverhand."

14+2=16. Honesty and straightforwardness.

Hmm. Those robes... An "Anti-Heroes" fan, Inev?
I got the hood from Miko, then made something robe-like to go with them.

Send me a PM with what I got wrong with your character, or in Larenxis' case, what I got wrong with the scene.

"Hmm, six. That should be enough," Mavryck said smiling. He shakes Varstl's hand saying "It isn't me you should be worried about. I've only been here a little while. The Shard has an effect on people. Robs from the weak, and compared to the Lich Emperor, everyone's weak." He laughed some more, than turned to Semong.

"My high priest gave me my name, and he," Mavyrck traced his finger along the scars on his face "had a sense of humour." He laughed again, head thrown to the sky, rain falling in his mouth. "Ah..." he sighed after his bout. "You folks ready to go into the dungeon?"

"I'd rather wait for a little while," Zem said with a smile from the edge of the dais. "I have some preparations I'd like to make first, if it's all the same to you.

OOC: How long will it take me to get my spells back? I used up way more than was necessary on the owlbear and cultists.

OOC: I assume the normal night's rest.

"Well then," Mavryck said, lighting his lantern in the darkness, "I think I'll get out of this blasted rain if you don't mind!" laughing again he started to walk away. "I'm headed to the cultist's barracks, by the way," he shot a look at Varstl "team." He smiled widely and plodded through the mud, his small light making the water on the leaves around him glisten and reveal just how dark it had become everywhere else.

"Wait, barracks?" Luja says, having edged closer to where the nutter stood than before. "I wasn't aware cults had barracks. How long must they have been here to have such a permanent building?"

"Quite a while, apperantly," Zem shrugged in response to Luja's question. "They can't have been very good if this is all that they managed to do in all that time," he continued, looking at the now-crumbling alter with distaste. "Don't get any high hopes for the state of this 'barracks.'" He conjured another dancing light and followed the man called Harvester. There was little chance of the barracks being anything other than a few tattered shacks, but even that was better than nothing. Perhaps it would give him a chance to dry off: he certainly hoped so.

"Oh, they've been here a while," Mavryck said. "Hey, maybe when they first arrived they were intelligent, decent human beings although I must say I don't think that's all that likely based on m- ah, sorry, rambling again. Right in here gentlemen." He opened a thick wooden door and put out his lantern. The building appeared to be designed as an indoor marketplace, although any stands or shops were vacant. The windows, now darkened by vines, were arched and curved slightly so that as they stretched up to the extremely high ceilings they nearly reached a point. There was a golden glow to the room, which you see is from lanterns placed sparingly on the polished stone floor. And, amongst the cots there is a robed man, who, hearing the door open runs, knocking over a lantern carelessly setting a bed on fire and then disappears out through another door into the cold, dark night. Mavryck laughs at the flames and walks inside.

"It's better than I anticipated," Zem admitted. He looked around the room, unpreturbed by the fleeing man. "You can have the bed that's on fire. I'll just settle in over here." He settled back on one of the cots and gave the world in general a charming smile. "I trust my belongings shall remain in my posession as I sleep, yes?" he said. Without waiting for an answer he put his pack beneath his head and closed his eyes.

I'm going to be gone for a week starting tomorrow. If the plot progresses any further just have Zem follow along until I get back. The immidiate plan is to get some rest so I get my spells back. Control my character if you must, but keep that in mind.

"Well, at least we don't have to bother setting up a fire now."

Luja takes off his armour and casts Alarm (Two hour duration). He then curls up on one of the beds - one some distance away from the flames - lays his armour next to him and closes his eyes, trying to get to sleep.

"If we have anyone on watch, I'll take over in two hours so I can renew the spell."

Mavryck laughed again. "You're just going to leave it burning? Ha ha! Fantastic!" He settled down and prepared for rest. "Surely you wouldn't trust a man like me to keep watch, so I'll just go to sleep," he said playfully. "I'll see your ashes in the morning."

Semong stared at the flaming bunk, sighed, and stamped toward it.
"If you want something done at all..." he muttered.

(Does anyone want to do something other than sleep? If not, I'll just progress to the morning.)

(Well if I don't give in to peer pressure, none of the cool kids will like me.)

Semong deals with the flaming bed; mumbling to himself as his party tucks in for the night. Mavryck snores a bit, and the gnome feels even more suspicion. How safe is this place anyway? Nevertheless, he picked a bunk and rested his tired body.

Dawn came in the form of a growing grey light. The clouds were persisting in their efforts to make the city into a lake, and the sound of rain on leaves and glass was enveloping. The lamps on the ground were burnt out and another had fallen over. It seems a cultist or two had returned, but nothing appeared to be missing and no one was hurt. Cowards. Perhaps it was the owlbear head that Velve had by his bedside...

"Good morning" Mavryck said playfully. "Another beautiful day in Thornsgate." He looked up to the highest windows, the rain pounding and the thunder rumbling.

Semong half opened his lids, then shut them again and turned away from Mavryck. "Can't we sleep a little longer?"

Luja groaned, uncurling himself and adorning his armour - somehow, without sitting up. His ability to recall his spells recovered after the fatigue of the previous night, he was ready to face the day - as soon as he had eaten, of course.

"I'd rather not have to resort to rations just yet. What are the chances we could find anything worth eating around here?"

Then a couple of other bodily needs made themselves known.

"Er... back in a bit."

With that, he rolled off the bunk and shuffled off to do his business elsewhere.
