"Aye, acid would work," Zem said. He sighed and flexed his fingers. "I wish I could cast forth magical fire as some mages do, but alas that is beyond my skill at the moment. For now we shall have to settle with torches and oil."

"Don't be so quick to discount the possibility of others having useful tools. I myself have brought along candles, oil, flint and steel, a lantern - and even a few tindertwigs."

(I'll draw a map soon enough, until then, Thornsgate is just short of a day's travel from Braethwick.)

Stomping into the bar at this time is a rather dour-looking creature, last seen in line. At the time the stocky stature and near-permanent frown made it seem as if the call reached the Duergar of the Underdark, but upon closer inspection he's simply a Dwarf. Without so much as a glance to the men huddled over the map he sets his traveler's pack next to a barstool with a surprisingly loud thud, coughs, and hops his way onto the seat. It's clear that he's very comfortable in the particular stool he selected, and upon closer inspection the floorboards seem worn and bent where his pack sits.

Two oddly misshapen coppers clatter on the bar, and the harried barkeep stays true to cliche as he slides over with a frothing pint. A frothing pint and a crumpled piece of paper with hasty scrawl. The barkeep seems to be scraping his knife on the lumpy coppers, but the Dwarf stops him with a slow, silent shake of his head; the barkeep goes back to more mundane matters. The Dwarf slowly sips his lager while reading the paper, as a lord or baron would read correspondence over wine, and the barkeep resumes his nervous stares at the collected men of ill repute. Suddenly, the Dwarf sputters and chokes; it would have been a full spit-take had he not held the beer in his mouth so adamantly.

"The Seven Shards of the Black Lich?!"

He turns finally towards the rest of the assembled group, as if seeing them for the first time.

"Insanity! Records tell much of the Black Lich, I should know, but his Crystal shards are nothing more than a fabrication by Bards who feel the strange need to make more infamous the creature who has already killed so many and destroyed so much. This is our mission? This is madness."

The Dwarf takes a long gulp of his lager, then sets the empty pint down with a clatter.

"I've got everything we'd need for wilderness travel in my shop," he says with a stubby thumb pointing out the door. "When do we leave?"

Zem stared at the newcomer with an expression of almost comical confusion. "Er...who are you?" he asked. "Another member of our party, I assume?" A thought occured to him. "Do you have any alchemist's fire in your shop, perchance?"

EDIT: Changed this post completely, as the Inev posted his thing while I was writing it.

The Dwarf blinks twice, as if a switch has just activated a trap somewhere in the dungeon of his mind. He pays for a new drink with a pair of normal-looking coins as he unfurls a familiar white-marked paper from his pocket.

"Varstl Silverhand," he explains to his staring audience after his outburst. "Dungeoneer."

"Good to meet you, Varstl," Zem said. He eyed the parchment and smiled. "So you got a bit lost on the way from the sorting to the inn, or something equally delaying? No matter. What's this shop you mentioned?"

The bartender raised his eyebrows and nodded at the dwarf's statements on the Seven Shards. He nodded even more rigourously as they suggested leaving. "Best to set off right away," he said, and then under his breath "and get out of my inn..."

"Yeah, the sooner we leave the sooner we can get to some action. I don't about you guys but I'm in need of some good slashing of the flesh and bone."

OOC: I'm alright, and I think it's best we charge ahead for the sake of momentum.

"Well, I'll be setting off straight away, anyone is free to join me, and if someone wants to get their items they can catch up later. So, whos with me?!?"

"An excellent plan, my new companions," Zem said. "I just want to pick up a few things before leaving...I'll meet you all on the edge of town."

He leaves the inn, finds a shop, and buys two flasks of alchemist's fire. (40 gp)

OOC: There, now I have what I want and we can get moving.

At the edge of town, Semong speaks up, "Well, now's as good a time as any to get going."

OOC: Do you want to do this part or should we, Larenxis?

(Take it away. You can leave Braethwick rather uneventfully. Once in the woods though, I'd like it if at least three people were online at once for the encounter, but I don't know how likely that is to happen.)

"Let's go!" Luja seems eager to set off. in a way. Standing at the gate out of Braethwick, he looks ready to go charging off into the woods on his own if need be. "I've never been on an adventure before!"

"Ah yes, adventure," Zem smiled. "A wonderous thing indeed when viewed from a distance. One must hope that one never get's close enough to it to see the grime that encrusts it."

Before rejoining the party Zem had changed into his travelling clothes and picked up the rest of his equipment. His clothes were still blue with gold trim, but much sturdier now. He carried what looked to be a walking staff with a wickedly sharp spear head attached to one end, a staff that couldn't really be called a spear due to its shortness. A finely built crossbow of black metal and darkly oiled wood was strapped across his back.

OOC: I have a shortspear and a light crossbow, in case anyone's wondering.
As for three people being online at once...that might be tricky for me. I'll be on erratically tomorrow, and then on for a long time on Monday. Might be on later today, but it's doubtful.

OOC: I suggest we just go. Get this game moving a bit. Bring on the goblins! Forward the dragons! Let's rock this fantasy world already!

IC: "Let's go, hey?" Zem threw out his arm in a grandiose gesture towards the woods looming in front of them. The spearhead on his staff came perilously close to Velve's face, but Zem didn't appear to notice.
