I just picked up Player's Handbook 1 and 2 on sale. There seems to be a good group playing at my local shop and i live in a big city so i'm sure there are plenty of players in my area.

Who here still plays? or started playing again recently?. What do you find most appealing about the game?

I have a bunch of friends who play, but none of them take it that seriously, and to me that puts me off, since its the kind of thing you have to either go all the way or don't bother at all.

No desire at all. The part of me that is social seems to be... resilient to the idea.

I used to. But then my DnD buddys moved away and our DMs ran out of ideas. *Le sigh* I miss it.

There's nothing antisocial about spending an evening having fun with friends. The stereotype that these things are antisocial really needs to end.

It's not me that has that complex, its everyone else. Therefore even if I don't think that way, it wont matter when you're inevitably treated differently by those around you.

I like to play 3.5 when I DM. I barely know any rules, but 3.5 has so many ins and outs that people just tend to accept that I'm not making it up, and that somewhere in a dusty-long forgotten tome, it is legal.

When I read stuff like this, it really makes me appreciate how great my circle of friends are. Like I said earlier in the topic, i have a few friends who play it, and no-one gives a damn. We're all 17-18, and we do what we find fun without fear of judgement because at the end of the day, people like different things and we all respect that. I hate to think how repressed i'd feel among friends who would pass judgement over something as trivial as spending my weekend playing a 'nerdy' tabletop game.

I love Dming and will always be a fan of 3.5's core rules.

The new edition just doesn't fit with me. I suppose it's because it attempts to blob several skills together and messes with my magic system!

Bah, I'm the DM, I'm Ao, anyway/

It is a truly unique and wonderful experience. Too bad my friends would rather dick around and waste everyone's time than actually really care about the game. A shame - I wish I had been born a nerd in the mid-60s, so as to be a teenager in the 70s, when it was far more popular.

Eh, I'm a romantic. Sue me.

I'm a 3.5 dude, by the way. I've played (not GMed) some 4e; it's okay, but doesn't really feel like D&D to me. Feels more like the Miniatures game.

I won't touch 4th ed, but the Pathfinder game the fine people over at Paizo Press (fuck me I sound like an ad) is basically 3.75. It fixes the issues 3.5 did have (and let's face it, it wasn't perfect) but doesn't oversimplify, and remains essentially the same game. I won't say 4th isn't DnD anymore. It's just not GOOD DnD anymore.

DnD is a game after my own heart... I started playing a few years ago, and I've always found it a fun experience you can only get from a tabletop game.
A lot of the fun for me, I think, is just creating characters. Creating character builds, backstories, and the novelty of playing many types of characters. I tend not to DM, but even then I usually have a character.
My group plays a combination 3.5 and Pathfinder (and a few house rules.) Never played 4e, but from what I've heard, the things I love about 3.5 are the parts downplayed in 4e.

Yeah, I'm an old fan. Going all the way back to my childhood. My parents played, so I played, but I played by the AD&D rules. My boyfriend has been trying to teach me 3.5 rules but I'm just lost on it. It's too complex, and there's too much stuff to have to fight with.

So I don't anymore. But I want to get back into it

I just got back from a session :)

Okay, we were playing Star Wars d20 but we usually play 3.5 (trying to branch out now). I'm DM (or GM now I suppose).

What I like most is when the PCs surprise you as a DM. For example, in the Star Wars game I'm running they crashed a star destroyer into a planet, something I can honestly say I never saw coming (though perhaps I should have given my PCs :D)
