/thread.

The worst part is that it ignored what could be an interesting discussion into whether or not D&D assists or hinders a prison's stated goal, which is to reform the inmate. Can escapism help them deal with real problems and help them on their way back to being a law-abiding citizen, or does it go straight against the punishment part of it and hence should be forbidden?

Then again, if you need any tools at all other than your brain to play RPG, you are a WEAKLING.

Because I would love to watch a game played by convicted felons. Imagine the arguments they would have over how it is possible to use a shard of glass to slice a mans throat so deep that their head flips open like a pez dispenser.

Can't really see the need for a d100. Most every D&D player will have a few d10s knocking about. I suppose people must buy them though, otherwise they wouldn't get sold.
You must admit that it's cool.

Well it looks like Dungeons and Dragons won't be getting a SAVING THROW, in Prison institutions!

I can't believe i said that.

Dungeon master Drunk Guss must have gotten shanked by Billy Bob the Wife Beater after his elf paladin got slain.
I don't know how successful of a Paladin Billy Bob the Wife Beater would be, you know with the whole wife beating thing. Though playing paladins could help rehabilitate prisoners.

Hey, they just confiscated the books. He can have them back when he gets out...oh wait, he's serving a life sentence BECAUSE HE KILLED SOMEONE.

All they did was take away his Dungeons and Dragons. People aren't supposed to do the things they enjoy most in prison. That's not what it's there for. I'm sure they have a whole library of books he could entertain himself with, not to mention television and other wonderful amenities.

Oh, and for those arguing "well, we're supposed to be helping with reformation," here's my response to that: the dude is a lifer. Reformation will do him no good.

So surely their explanation for taking his D&D books away should have been "So he can't enjoy himself." rather than some half-arsed story about promoting gang mentality.

No escape or escapism allowed...unless they imagine that the prison is a dungeon, the guards are dragons and the warden is the dungeon master.

I thought prison was a punishment, I don't think they should be playing anything if they're in there.

I thought they would've banned it because you could sharpen the figurines' weapons into weapons...

They're lethal if you stab people in the right place!
Yeah but you have negative penalties for exotic weapons and, if you're using two, off-hand. Then there's fortitude saves. It's just not likely.

I thought Exotic Weapon Proficiency was a Prisoner class ability.

It's a game, no diffrent from the other ones they are given to play already. I don't see how it could foster desires to escape unless they made a story line surronding that idea and even then the story won't carry out to reality.

Only if you've passed the trials of solitary confinement, can you gain the proficiency.

You really don't want a bored prison populace.

I don't know....I've been in some really, REALLY hostile gaming groups in my lifetime.

So the argument that it may "foster hostility" amongst hardened convicts isn't completely without merit.
