So, yeah, Dwarf Fortress. It's one of those games you just have to play. It's made by a developer who's motto is "Losing is Fun". That should tell you enough.

A Let's Play of the old two dimensional version. Also considered hilarious. [http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Boatmurdered/]
Nist Akath, a Dwarf Fortress story. [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=19279.msg194517#msg194517]

Highly advised you read those before you play.

Main website. [http://bay12games.com/dwarves/]
Tilesetted version download. You'll probably want to play this one, instead. [http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2021]
The wiki. (You'll need this.) [http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Main_Page]

So, yep, play it and comment. You can't claim you're a good gamer until you've won at Dwarf Fortress.

I haven't won Dwarf Fortress. I play it a lot though.

Zark, it's so complex! Fortress Mode is manageable, but Adventurer mode was just me stumbling around, then getting killed.

I'll eventually figure it out.
Shhhh. *puts his finger to his lips*

Liberal Crime Squad (by the same people) is way more fun though. Nothing like going on a text-based massacre!
It's been ages since I played LCS, I was terrible at it when I tried it.

Check out the wiki, there're a few "newbie guides" on there.

My brother talks about that game all the time. He freaking won't shut the hell up about it, anyway I tried playing it a while back, had no idea what the hell I was supposed to be doing and then my computer crashed. After that I lost any interest in playing it.

By the way, the new version was released only a month ago. A lot of those guides are outdated; you still may be able to get the general idea of how to play, but don't be surprised if something's wrong.

My favourite thing about Dwarf fortress is the ability to make elaborate death traps. Don't have much of a military? Don't worry! Kill the seigers with your 20 story tall magma cannon!

I love Dwarf Fortress so much I made guitar tabs for the music.

Dwarf Fortress has a lot of revolutionary ideas, but it is poorly coded and could incorporate a couple other things that would make the game 100 times better. Still unlike anything else and should be played by all gamers.

I don't know if it's poorly coded. I think the UI etc is poorly designed, but the coding seems quite sound.

The game is exceptionally well coded. It's surprisingly efficient for the complexity of it all.

Do you mean the amount of bugs? Keep in mind that Dwarf Fortress is still in alpha; is is not even close to being complete and bugs are to be expected. There is no quality assurance team to make sure each version is as bug free as possible before it's released. That responsibility falls to the player base after the release.

That's the thing that gets me about DORF FORT. You play it and see how vast and complex it is, then you find out it's still unfinished and only one guy is working on it.

*insert holy shit here*

40d was pretty much bug free, actually, other than missing features.

I can think of one "major" coding error, and that's the pathfinding. Pathfinding can REALLY destroy your FPS.
