So... I've been reading "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" again... trying my best to get through the tough read by trying different version, (It's definitely going better now that certain names are correct and easier for me to identify) and it got me wondering when the next DW was going out.

So off to Google I ran, typed in "DW8" in hopes that I could be lazy... I could not. So... a pair of backspaces away, and I added "ynasty Warriors 8" before hitting enter.

Little did I realize how close the release actually is! So now I've been watching videos, clamoring for any bit of info I can get and periodically stopping into Gamestop for the official NA release.

I haven't been this excited for a game in a while, actually. I grew up with DW since playing the Campaign of Nanking on my PS1's Demo disc (Remember those!) over and over again till I got the full game that Christmas.

I have to say, I'm liking what I'm seeing, and frankly... I saw a video for Huang Gui's new weapon... "A boat" and nearly creamed my pants! Did I mention how I haven't been this excited for a game in a while? That video cranked it to 11.

Why! Oh why isn't there an official release so I can pay it off rather that put a down payment?

Also if you like the 3 kingdoms era. Check out the movie Red Cliff directed by John Woo which is about the battle of Chi Bi. Also if you have the choice get the extended version and not the theatrical version. Some awesome stuff in it, great action and great character sequences like Zhuge Liang and the arrows and the "tortoise" battle formation (no spoilers there).

For serious. This movie was freaking amazing, especially for any fans of DW/Rot3K stuff. The casing was perfect, and iirc, this was the highest budget chinese movie ever made, and it really shows it. No cheesy CG or anything, and seeing the battle of Chi Bi play out in that kind of scale was simply amazing.

Also, to the original topic, I'm pretty excited for DW8 too. I've mostly dismissed the series since the current generation, as even in 5 they started diverting and getting way too "anime" for my taste (huge, stupid weapons and cosplay looking "armor"), I think the most grounded was 4, and I really liked DW5: Empires. I really miss the old system from 4 where you could make your own officer, and have bodyguard units level up with you, as well as how the story followed the empire through its run rather than individuals, and you could change characters as you went.

Also, the music, good god those epic guitar riffs.

Anyway, 8 looks like it took a detour back towards "realism", that is, the officers aren't running around looking like they're at Otakon, and Lu Bu doesn't appear to be carrying that stupid cross thing *crosses fingers that he actually has a halbred once again, as he should*

Honestly, Warriors Orochi 3 and DW7 have completely restored my faith in the franchise. These are the games that get crapped on for every game being the same but I had so much fun and garnered so many well spent hours on those 2 games that I don't care.

Hmm I never did get into DW but then again the games were never sold in my local gameshops when I was younger. I loved me some Bladestorm though.

Might check this new one out one day.
Would I be missing anything if I don't play 1 - 7?

They all tell the same core story and the core gameplay is all the same (with the exception of DW1 which was a 2D fighting game). However, all the little nuances, individual stories, overall designs, some weapons, modes and a bunch of other details are different between all of the instalments. Most people seem to consider DW3 and 4 to be their favourites (4 is my personal favourite) so if you can find them I'd say give 'em a go. You should also check out DW5 if you get the chance; it improved on DW4 in many notable areas and has some of my favourite moments even if there were some things about it that were inferior to 4.

Also, if you liked Bladestorm you could check out the Kessen games which feature similar gameplay.

They're PS2 games right? Thanks for the recommendations. I'll pick em up for cheap on amazon or something and I do know about the Kessen series. A friend of mine has the games but he won't let me borrow them!

Okay, this thread has prompted much research and a little excitement too...that KuF2 video looks fantastic. Anyway, I'm really in the mood for some DW type gameplay now. I basically want to play with Sun Shang Xiang, kill loads of enemies and level her up a bit. What is the best way to do that? DW7, or 5? From the sounds of it I'm probaly better of skipping 6. I don't want to play with other characters. Is conquest mode the way to go (I don't think I've tried it before)? I think I have 5 but 7 I'll have to find over the weekend.

Haven't heard of Kingdom Under Fire....are there any more games in this ilk? What is the best thing right now to scratch this bloody itch? Also, is it true I can have a pet tiger in DW7??

Have been googling all evening now and have come across Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom, N3: Ninety Nine Nights (and a sequel) and Bladestorm: Hundred Years War, all of which seem to be in the same vein as DW. Any of them any good? I can fish out DW5 for some Sun Shang Xiang/Chakram action, but am leaning toward something more current gen.

On a brighter note, Huang Gai's Iron Boat/Arm Blade weapon was released as DLC for Dynasty Warriors 7 and it's an awesome weapon. It's very overpowered and unbelievably silly, but it's a lot of fun if you don't mind being able to instantly kill 30+ peons and officers by surfing on a magically conjured wave.

So it's a melee version of Sun Shang Jiang's bow from DW6?

Dynasty Warriors gets an eigth entry....

While Kingdom Under Fire, the game that did what Dynasty Warriors never did/wouldn't do (integrate actual unit control and tactics with high count hack and slashery) struggles to get even one sequel of it's sort since the days of the original Xbox. Just ain't fair...

Kingdom Under Fire was an awesome game, I still can't beat Kendal or Regnir's campaigns. To be fair I think they did try to what you're saying with Bladestorm: The Hundred Year War but it didn't get much attention though so I guess they didn't think it was worth it. Also whatever happened to Kingdom Under fire 3 did it get canned or something?

Fell off the face of the Earth, i think.

And I actually don't HATE the Musou series, I had a great time with them up to about Samurai Warriors 2. It's just that when I played KuF: The Crusaders I yelled after an hour "I can actually keep control of my units, I can customize my army, I can use different weapons, why isn't Dynasty/Samurai Warriors doing stuff like this?!"

That's too complicated for the series I play to kick all of China's collective ass and laugh like a moron when I kill 8 enemies with one swing of an oversized weapon.

I played N3 for a while, and it gave me the same "kill ALL the dudes" feeling I get from DW, but the character roster is MUCH smaller and each of them have a story mode, whereas Dynasty Warriors either has a lot of repeating missions or a bunch of characters without story modes.

Dynasty Warriors 2 was where the franchise peaked. And that experience peaked at about the 30 minute mark. It's all been repetitive slog from there.

I played N3 for a while, and it gave me the same "kill ALL the dudes" feeling I get from DW, but the character roster is MUCH smaller and each of them have a story mode, whereas Dynasty Warriors either has a lot of repeating missions or a bunch of characters without story modes.

I don't mind a smaller roster...if anything it's a bonus as too many characters dilutes the backstory, becomes confusing (without meaning to sound disrespectful, there are only so many variations of Wu, Lu, Bi, Lei, Sun, etc that can be remembered. After a while they all become confusing....except for Lu Bu of course!) and gives less opportunity for standing out. Reviews I read just now of N3 II didn't sound promising however. Bladestorm got good reviews.

Well, just reading up some more and turns out if I ignore DW7's story mode and go with Conquest Mode instead, it could be right up my alley. SSX with levelling up and a tiger. Shame that a upgraded version, Xtreme Legends, is only on PS3 :-\ Conquest mode seems promising too as it's smaller chunks with a strategic element of its own.

Don't get me wrong, I love Dynasty Warriors and all, but I totally agree! If a new Kingdom Under Fire game was released with the same style as Heroes/Crusaders then I'd buy it in a heartbeat! Would love to see one!

First, since I heard the game was announced, I've had a picture of DW6 Lu Bu as my desktop background through 3 different computers/laptops. Second, like I said, DW is just mindless asskicking for me. If I want something relating to strategy, I'd be playing an RPG or dungeon crawler.

The first... I watched like... 6-8 timed when I was flying to and from Japan for my honeymoon, and the latter I recently picked up in a best buy. I like martial arts epics, so I turned the box over and read "IN THE YEAR 196BC, CAO CAO-" and stopped flat. I didn't need to read the rest, I bought it and watched it. Not even a little regret... it's a really good movie.

Pretty much the game I am most excited about this year if it gets a western release date. I have been constantly checking the 2 facebook pages I like that post new stuff every week pretty much right when new info comes out. Really I just hope it is actually coming out in the states.

I'm sure it will, there's no way they wouldn't bring this over... but I'll tell you this. If, for some reason they don't, it will be the first import game I will have ever bought.

Could you not tell who was who? I found all the names that had been changed at the very least rhymed with the historical name.

OT: Since Dynasty Warriors 2 me and my best friend have been playing the Dynasty Warriors games to death as soon as they come out. 13 years on and the plan hasn't changed.

Some some like "Liu Pei" it wasn't that hard... but there were some where it was simply alien... and given that there are many more characters in the book than playable characters in the game, it would make me 2nd guess every time I saw a name that was similar... "Is this someone I know? Is it not?" Eventually I just stopped. I'm already further than the last time I read it... but just barely.

It was the DW3 demo for me and my friend, but same story. A new one comes out and we play it together. We've even divvied up the characters as to whom has ownership of whom.

This is one of the greatest things I've ever seen. Day one buy, and I'm not even joking. After the disappointment of 6, DW7 got back to the roots of the franchise, and was one of the most enjoyable games I've played in a good while. I'm confident they can outdo themselves with 8 though

As mentioned above, I have a friend I play these games with, and we watched that video together... When we saw him sail his boat of murders, we hollered out with excitement like 14 year olds again.

But this series comes with it's own back story in the form of not only a Chinese Epic novel... but history itself. These people really lived and fought. One of the things I hated about 6 the most, (Besides the stupid mash one button forever combat system) was that they took characters out of the game.

I hope to one day see a DW, where every generic NPC general is eventually made dynamic.

I wuld be excited about this game, but i'm in the "stop with the rediculous weapons, make lu bu into a terrifying opponent again, and bring back the DW4 body guards" boat. Though i'd be willing to negotiate on the body guard bit.

None of the bodyguards were as OP as DW3's 8 elite spearman.

It's already been confirmed that he's using his halberd.

That would create a roster of over 300 completely unique characters! If you want to have something like that so badly go buy DW7: Empires when it's released. It allows you to make edit characters and replace the actual generic officers in the game with them.
