The only free-to-play games I've enjoyed at all are those which began life as box price or box + sub games and Path of Exile. In those games that which I disliked about them were the things implemented with the intent to push micro transaction purchases.
PoE shows that you can have a great game with a non-intrusive f2p model, but that's because Grinding Gear Games set out to make a great game rather than make a game which will encourage micro purchases. The best description of bad f2p I've seen was a comment that the games are highways covered with potholes and a cash shop selling gravel with which to fill them in.
It's a sneaking suspicion I have, but I don't see EA's developers going the PoE route with this.

Perhaps they suddenly realized they were doing too many things to jepodise next years "worst company in america" award.

Since I am not going to install Origin in my PC, EVER, I will have to pass on EA's brilliant FTP plans. Besides, that ship will explode in flames even before it hits the water.

The ME3 multiplayer comparison was made by Andy, not EA.

EDIT: Nevermind, Andy ninja'd me.
I see that now. Mayhap I'll remember to put sleep ahead of posting messages, rather than using one to delay the other in the future.

When it comes to learning from their mistakes, EA has all the self-preservation and introspective wisdom of the Black Knight after all four of his limbs were cut off.

EA doesn't know how to do free to play.

As for connectivity, as long as you can play it offline and the stat tracking crap isn't intrusive it wouldn't bother me. Slapping on multiplayer can be a deal breaker for me though. I don't like the idea of paying for something I will never use.

I wouldnt mind if what they did was just a small spin-off title to go along with the release of the actual game to give some publicity, but to actually turn a franchise into a F2P game just because of a quick buck is a dumb decision

Looks like my policy of stopping to buy EA titles past 2007 got reinstated just in time (yea, got sidetracked by ME3 on the PS3... but I shall not be anymore, especially considering the outrageous pricing of PS3 games in my country).

EA is either collectively too stupid, too big, or has too many layers of stupid managers to understand how to do free to play games. They might as well stop doing it and move back to Steam as their distribution platform. That way, we can at least PLAY our mediocre spunkgargleweewee shooters.

I was already speculating that a Lasagna-crazy badger was standing at the helm of Microsoft, but what does that make of EA?
I'm not sure if we can go lower than that. A crazy sloth stoner maybe?

Wow, lot of people that assume it means the next mass effect, FIFA or battlefield will be free to play. Nowhere in the article does it say that, I mean, I know it's EA but jeez.

I have no real problem with this because EA knows battlefield, FIFA or mass effect will sell millions of copies by keeping a similar formula. All I got from the article was we would see a version of battlefield heroes for every franchise, a simple free to play version of the original franchise.

OP is confusing me. Are they saying that all games from now on are going to be like SimCity, or just that all games they put out will have online components, like achievements?

Hate to point it out, I really do, but RIP battlefront
I'm saddled with so many conflicting emotions. I'm happy Battlefront is getting remade, but it's being remade by an EA developer, the biggest asshole conglomerate in gaming. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...

Edit: Also, even though the mechanics of ME3 MP have F2P elements, it cannot be considered F2P. Also F2P elements in $60 games can go die in a hole. I payed for a complete experience, SP and MP, don't saddle me with that play for a thousand hours or pay a thousand dollars crap. ME3 multiplayer system was one of the most egregious, offensive things I've ever seen.

Maybe it'll just be aspects of f2p. Maybe they'll still release a regular game here and there.

Just that their will be online components, I'm assuming, judging from Moore talking about things like leaderboards and stats, and saying that every game will have an "online component". In short, why all the hate? I know it's EA, but come on. If you are going to get upset with EA over this, be upset with Microsoft for their achievements, Sony for their trophies, and Valve for their achievements.

I don't trust or have any confidence in their ability to understand what free to play means to care much about this news.

Just look that what they call "free to play" with SWTOR.

On the upside, there will be demos for all the EA games.
They know what free to play means: a system designed to milk more money from consumers with the pretense of a zero cost system back-loaded with large quantities of in-app purchases insidiously designed to seem innocuous at the time.

Bloody hell, so as an Australian, (assuming I don't import) I'll pay $90 for an incomplete game? Fuck that noise.

So free to play is making a lot of money and now they think they should be exploiting that as well, I doubt they will do much more then pay to win and every thing that can be charged for is now a micro transaction strategies, regardless it doesn't make me any more likely to buy anything from them the games are crap and the fact I wouldn't pay for them doesn't mean would take them for "Free*"
