I'm going to play devil's advocate and say that from a financial point of view it makes perfect sense for EA to take this approach.

Used games sales = no profit for EA, so they are fighting back.
They are offering DLC for online pass for $10.00, which still gives you the option to play online.

As others have pointed out, I think it's only a matter of time before other companies take this approach.

The problem is that is won't just hurt used game buyers but hurt multiple user homes. I have 3 people in my home that play EA Sports games and from what i have seen it might work like Bad Company's VIP system where the code can only be used by one gamertag.

WAH! WAH! EA SUCKS! WAH!

We get it! Everyone hates EA!

*Cough* I had to get that out of my system.

While I am not a Madden fan, I don't blame EA for trying to make a profit from used games. It doesn't mean it does not suck. I just understand why they are doing it.
There's a distinct difference between making a profit and fucking consumer rights in the ass.

Now, while each anal thrust may not seem so painful, the total force of anal thrusting will eventually make ones ass bleed.

Well, think of it this way: EA gets nothing from used games that you buy from Gamestop, etc. as well as the decrease in sales of new games. From a business standpoint, it's perfectly rational for them to want to increase sales of new games in any way possible. If that means making used games worthless, then they'll do it. Hell, it's been that way for PC games for years.

You must remember that EA is a corporation, not a guy who plays music on a street corner. They will *always* do what's best for their bottom line. It's basic Prisoner's Dilemma.

Plus, it's not that they are utterly barring you from playing the sports game online, they just want a 10$ slice of the pie for the privilege. After all, they have to keep the servers running.

*shrug* I don't buy enough new games, especially from EA, to really care too much about this. Oh, and i'm a PC gamer too, so I don't exactly get "used games" either.

I'm glad to see that a company finally got their head out of their asses and realized that used game sales hurt them much more than piracy ever could.

1 used game sold = 1 lost sale, while 1 pirated game often do not result in a lost sale (if the game is any good obviously).

If this results in the death of Computer Exchange, then bravo EA :)
As a PC gamer as well as a Console gamer, this is imo, just CD keys.

BIG DEAL.

I love that argument from pirates, because it ends up being true more often than you'd think. It's not pirating, it's an involuntary demo...

Its a good thing I rarely buy EA games then. Still, not giving used game owners multiplayer is stupid. The game was paid for at full price once. Is that not enough? Corporate greed ruins everything.

You conveniently left out the part in the article where they mention that online play can be unlocked for $10.

I fail to see why this is so outrageous. I don't blame companies for wanting to make money off of used games sales, since it deprives them of money. Rather than enforce some kind of draconian punishment that renders used games useless to anyone who buys them, they are instead trying to make a small profit by creating the $10 code. That is very affordable. The only problem I have with this is that you would have to pay for this code even if you just rented the game. Though that's not enough for me to start claiming that EA is the anti-christ.

Seriously, it's 10$. Considering you already got a used game cheap, it's not a big deal.

This is a good strategy by EA. Stick it to GameStop without hurting it's fans at all. Anyone that actually cares about the industry will pay the extra 5 bucks to buy a NEW game.
This is my view on it. I've gone into Gamestop and Game and to my left I'll see a brand new game for about ?50. To my right, a preowned version of the same game for about ?45. And the guy who traded it in probably got ?30 worth of credit, or gave in another game and ?5 to get a new game.

I HATE the amount of shelf space given to used games. I also hate them trying to sell me used games. I read an article (possibly on here) about why used games are hurting new releases by taking up too much shelf space and it's true. I can only browse through a hand full of games now before hitting the preowned. It's next to impossible to get some older games new unless I go online.

just gonna say this thread was done before yesterday i think...
Really? I did a search and it came up blank.
got a link?
sorry im not mad or trying to come across as "one of those guys"

i am very very lazy and i have to work in a bit, otherwise i would search through my past posts to find that thread, but continue on the thread, it seems not everyone saw it yesterday

OT: me being the used game buyer (unless its bioware) i truly hate this, as its going to domino effect into all other games im sure for EA and other companies will follow after seeing it slightly works
