Used game sales are the biggest sink of money for game companies. They're trying to control falling profits. Why are they bad?

Devil's Advocate here:

Okay...deep breath...so multiplayer games (especially on say...PS3, though less so on the 360)servers cost money to host. If you buy a game new, some of that money can be said to go to paying for servers...if you buy a game pre-owned, you haven't put money in the kitty. So...eh...Frak you...em...having though about it this way...I'm not Devil's Advocate...I'm just advocate...not that I'd buy a sports sim...

So? It's madden. Just buy last years' game and you won't even be able to tell the difference.

Yeah!
I do not think they need to be coddled (EA is a big boy now) or defended but I just do not feel like letting it seem like the masses disagree with it, because I am fine with it.

Who cares? The dinosaurs are sinking into the tarpit, and inevitably they're going to splash the black stuff on anyone nearby as they go under. Free to play and micro-transaction games are enjoying more support, and becoming better games at an alarming scale (just look at the likes of DDO, or Quake 3 ), and the old greedy industry is going to be left behind to die. Let them scream 'thief!' 'Pirate!' and bemoan their inability to buy a new BMW this year all they want. Gaming is moving on, and fewer and fewer of us are listening to these archaic money-grubbing fucktards everyday.

This is a good strategy by EA. Stick it to GameStop without hurting it's fans at all. Anyone that actually cares about the industry will pay the extra 5 bucks to buy a NEW game.
Nah it still smacks of rich guys whining because they're not as rich as they could be.
TO EA: You're richer then I'll ever be *****, so STFU!
What about the poor guy who never got a chance to buy Madden 2010 (or whatever) and a year or so later he wants to pick it up? He goes on Amazon, or to Gamestop, or his buddy, and gets a used copy for $20. Now he can't play multiplayer.

I can understand them having a stick up their butts about piracy, but used game players are just buying/trading for games that have been legitimately purchased. If they don't want to pay an extra $25 (for older games, that's often the price difference vs. brand new at release) for a shiny coat of shrink wrap and that new instruction manual smell, I think they should have the right to do so, ESPECIALLY FOR GAMES THAT ARE OUT OF PRINT!

Between this and DRM, I think Shamus Young is going to have plenty to complain about on Experienced Points over the next few weeks.

HA! Jokes on you this time EA! I don't play Sports games!

Anyway, on to my rant now.

If the cost of games was lower, we who are rather strapped for cash because we have to pay for food, shelter, clothing, gas, tuition, and books for college could afford the games new and wouldn't have to get them used. You want someone to blame for the popularity of used game sales, EA (and the industry in general, I guess) look no further than the mirror.

According to this, EA is withholding multiplayer from their sports games from anyone who buys a used copy. As anyone who owns Madden will know, or soon find out, playing by yourself is rather boring. Is EA actively trying to steal the "Worst Game Company" away from Activision?
Thoughts? Theories? Angry Rants?

EA doesn't make money from used games sales at all. So is this really a surprise for you?

You are giving money to a company that did not make the game or even care about the quality.

Buy the games, support the devs not Gamestop...

Oh come on now. Aren't we all already aware that CD keys are faulty and hilariously unreliable? Especially ones made by EA, whose encryption was cracked so thoroughly that a two-year-old program can still generate CD keys for ANY EA GAME, including ones that were released AFTER the program debuted. Don't quote me on this since I haven't tried to use this puppy since The Sims 3, but I'm pretty sure it can still work, even today.

Unless EA throws a little money at a new encryption system (which they probably won't, since we've seen how important keeping money is to them), this is probably going to be a minor setback at best for anyone with a little perseverance and the strange, inexplicable desire to ever play an EA game online.

HeHe- I often wonder how many of the people on here that say ' just buy them new' actually have to pony up cash, or whether in fact its mummy and daddy doing the paying out. Wait till the little bastards have to work for a living-they'll change their tune...

See this is whey when I had a console I never bought used games. And since computers don't have a used game market I find this is rather funny.

Fortunately, we don't live in an anarcho-capitalist society and "it turns a profit" cannot be offered as a justification for a corporation to do whatever the hell it wants just because it's good for them.
Ha ha ha. That's a good one. Priceless.

doesn't affect me at all, i hate sports games ^_^, if i want to play football or golf, i'll do it with my friends, i refuse to control 11 people kicking a useless football into a virtual goal...when i could simply kick a real ball into a real goal and get much better praise for it.

however, for people who do play sports games...ouch...kick in the balls or what?

Oh EA... you take 1 step forward and 2 steps back...

This could get people to, you know, not buy your games so they don't have to deal with this crap? Ever think of that?
EA have taken a step forward lol?

History of EA: Hitler and Dr Mengele escaped Germany in 1945, fled to Argentina with help from the odessa network and the catholic church, helped run South American dictatorships until the 80s. Growing bored with world domination they founded EA.

My parents don't buy my video games. I do. But most of my money goes toward college and I don't have a lot leftover for entertainment.
