And here I offer the solution on how to make games that you won't buy used:

MAKE GAMES PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO SELL

There, solved the problem for you EA.

Terminate them.

On a serious note - this is a good move from EA, it will probably spread to their non-sport products. Expect Ubisoft, Activision and everyone else to follow.

This is exactly why I used to avoid PC gaming like the plague pre-Steam.

Good thing the majority of EAs games that are online suck.

I was worried till it said "Sports games", then I was relieved. Sure it's a terrible precedent, but sports games have always been overly clunky and terrible, especially the EA recycled variety.

That's a CD key that is, EA and others have been doing that for years. Now that it's the main bread winner, you didn't seriously think publishers wouldn't turn their attention to ruining console games did you?

Welcome to PC gaming boys.
^^^This. I've been waiting for the gaming companies to finally bring the smackdown on consoles, and here it is! Incidentally, it does kinda suck that there's no other way to limit the Antichrist that is Gamestop without giving a big middle finger to their fans.

How do you propose they do that?
Considering that they release a new version of their sports game every year, people would want to sell their old version of it since the new version will be better.

While this is just about the multiplayer, there are very few singleplayer games that are worth replaying over a new game as well.

Personally it doesn't affect me at all since I don't buy used games or their sport games.

I swear, gamers are some of the most whiny people I know. For every used game sale that occurs, the company that made the game makes no money. It goes to the store. So if a game gets bought, traded in the bought again, they just lost a sale. This can really add up. Companies are finding ways to reward people for buying new, and I think this a good thing. It's not like they are cutting you out of the content, you can still get it for $10. If you seriously can't afford $10, which is just over an hours work at low level jobs, you shouldn't be buying games anyway. Gamers needs to stop and think of WHY companies feel the need to do these things before raising a ruckus. If more people bought games new, giving money to the developers rather than Gamestop, or would stop pirating games, companies wouldn't feel the need to implement policies that piss you off.

what the hell? What possible good could come out of this? It's like their marketing chairmen are all written by Dr. Suess as main villans or something.
What good? Exactly, no good what so ever... damn I was just starting to think " Hey EA is actually getting better" BAM this shit comes up.. Its not like I play Madden or anything but,I'm concerned that other companies might follow EA's example.. On the other hand, I supppose they need to make profit aswell...and its only 10$ that we have to pay. Ah Damn it, I dont have an opinion now :(

The only people this effects is second hand buyers, who they don't care about anyway. Plus I fail how to see it'll equal less sales - apart from pre owned, see the angle?

Only good things can come from it, so good for EA. Although it'll be interesting in 2 years when Madden 11 servers are shut down, assuming this isn't a replacement for the shut downs and just another barrier to entry.

I don't know what the big deal is. It's not a move against Used Game Owners as the topic states, it's a move against Used Game Buyers. Really, it's not surprising at all that EA desires to make some money off of used games bearing their name. And really, how many serious sports game fans actually buy their games used anyway?

For those complaining about the massive force that is EA just wanting to make more money so they can buy five more Ferraris: It's not the guy who can afford a Ferrari that the company making less money is going to hurt. The bigwigs are never going to take a serious pay cut no matter how poorly the company does short of it nearly going out of business. It's the QA guy, the low level coder or maybe even the janitor that are going to feel it when EA finds a need to cut it's HR expenses.

My rant: EA are poopy noses!

No but seriously this anti-used-games shit is becoming more popular between game devs and it will soon become a common thing. We gotta deal with it, bend over and prepare our selves for more 'violation' (moral, not physical o.0) by gaming companies and their ridiculous drm crap and other similar shenanigans. Guess the consoles will become the most head-ache-less way to play games after all.

This doesn't hurt me since i don't play any sports games online, however i believe this is a bad move. Many consumers don't buy games at full price anyway. While trying to make an extra buck, EA seems to be trying to alienate a large amount of consumers.

How does that even work -- How the hell do they figure out who is and is not playing it used?
Glad it doesnt affect me.

This is bad. Many people buy new games COUNTING on the fact that they can sell them back for a larger return than what they would expect at Gamestop.

So yeah, go ahead: shoot yourself in the foot EA.

"I neeeeeed more money!".

Sorry, thought I'd just summarise the entire thought process of the CEO of EA.
