Seems a little hopeful. Hell, they found out that the distance Earth is from the Sun isn't even all that critical - we get the largest share of our heat from internal radiation, and I do mean the grow extra eyeballs kind of radiation. UV light from the sun is necessary for the ozone to produce some compounds necessary for life here, but other'n that I'd say they found a planet and got excited.
There's also no mention in that report of whether or not they were able to tell if it was a terrestrial planet or gas giant, which given the list of known extrasolar planets is entirely gas giants...odds aren't in its favor.

Lets not forget that even if it turns out to be everything people hope it to be, and hell, lets say we pick up radio signals from it even - we'd still need a way to get there, and nobody's in a hurry to colonize space right now. They're too busy mishandling their money.

EDIT: Taken from another news post about the same find: "If Gliese 581g has a rocky composition similar to Earth's, its diameter would be about 1.2 to 1.4 times that of the Earth, the researchers said."

...so they don't even know if it's actually terrestrial, and they're already calling it 'earthlike'. This is what happens when you don't black out news agencies

Probably try to claim it as a Catholic only planet?

OT: I'm actually more curious which government/corporation will try to own it first.[/quote

Catholic church IS a corporation ;D. One of the most powerful ones by the way.
But honestly I would laugh if in like 10 years we notice that it got hit by a huge ass meteor and got torn to pieces xD.

After all what we see now is what the planet WAS 20 years ago.

Oh and SCREW YOU Al Gore! Now I can drive a big ass SUV, smoke and produce a shit load of CO2 cause we got backup planet! ha ha!

My instant reaction and to-do list:

Yay resources!

1. Develop means to get there fast.
2. See if there is any intelligent life there. If there is, let's say hi. If there isn't...

On behalf of the (beautiful) country of Sweden! I call dibs! Fuck the UN and good day.

"But there are still many unanswered questions about this strange planet. It is about three times the mass of Earth, slightly larger in width and much closer to its star ? 14 million miles away versus 93 million. It's so close to its version of the sun that it orbits every 37 days. And it doesn't rotate much, so one side is almost always bright, the other dark.

Temperatures can be as hot as 160 degrees or as frigid as 25 degrees below zero, but in between ? in the land of constant sunrise ? it would be "shirt-sleeve weather," said co-discoverer Steven Vogt of the University of California at Santa Cruz."

We've discovered Twi'leks - isn't that the type of planet they're supposedly from in the Star Wars universe?

Let's go there right now!!!

''It's about 120 trillion miles away, so it would take several generations for a spaceship to get there.''

It would be possible capable of building a ship to sustain several generations. I guess.

NASA, let's get going.

I doubt it's completely like ours, especially considering recent medical studies have found out that we may need some of the noble gasses in our air to live properly. Lets face it, we evolved very specifically to this planet and to this mix of everything.

This planet is for our solar system right now! And Earth claims it as so!

Let's push it closer to the sun so it may develop!

Cool. I doubt there will be any life like ours since chance made us what we are and the chances were pretty small. If they ever find something useful over there it will make headlines all over the world and maybe boost our space technology because we so badly want to get there?

Oh yeah exoplanet told me about this on my Ipod.

Regardless there have already been earthsized planets found in their suns habital zones. Like Kepler 9c.

Who didn't already "know" there were planets like ours out there anyway?

I'm sure some one else has already expressed my opinion but I cba to trawl through 9 pages to check.

You sure? I thought .99 LS time dilation was a factor of 60.1 I must admit it has been 11 years since grade 9 science o.o
Yep. The time dilation factor comes from this equation:

...where t is time, v is your velocity, and c is the speed of light. If you do it for t=1, t' comes out to around 7.089.
Ahhh n.n Well you learn something new everyday.

First thought: Hmm earth like planet... sounds kinda like Mondas.

Second thought: Wait... Mondas? SHIT! Start building defences against the Cybermen!

Seriously though, this is very interesting. It raises all sorts of questions. What sort of atmoshpere does it have? Does it support life? Does it support intelligent life? When will it be feasable to travel there? If it does support life, what will the religous community think here on Earth? Again, if it supports life, will it be friendly or hostile? It'll certainly be interesting to see where this all leads.
