The religious implications are going to be fun to watch. Lets see what the Vatican does here.
How so?
Just because their are more planets doesn't mean that catholicism has been debunked or anything.

OP: I can has Star Wars lifestyle now?

My first reaction.

20 LIGHT YEARS @#$@#$%#@$%@#$#@%@#$%#@$^#$%^%^&%$!

LETS GO THERE RIGHT FUCKING NOW.
you think light years means it would take 20 light years to get there

I am getting fucking sick of this

light years means how long it takes light to travel in year we are no where close to being able to move the speed of light in fact if einstine is right (he could be wrong) it is impossible to travel the speed of light so in order to get there we would have to create a generational ship but that logistics of that are probably out of reach when we are focused on building bigger bombs to blow up brown and yellow people.

colonise. we have the start of a hegemony here!!
if that is an ender's game reference you are now my favorite person, so many people need the light of the speaker for the dead in their life yet none know of him.

My honest first thoughts:

1. Can I hump aliens yet?
2. Well isn't that lovely for everyone(for future generations included). I hope this helps renew people's interest in space travel, it's just so important us to be growing and exploring always.

How long until my own America makes it "Their" property?
Space works under nautical law. I'm pretty sure in order to claim it we have to set foot there under the "I claim this land for Spain!" act.

I can't wait! Once we perfect traveling at light speed, we'll just have to find a way to keep people alive on a spaceship for several hundred years.

I hate it when stupid reality ruins all the best sci-fi conventions.

If this is a real deal and not another screw up, then it just sucks that I won't live to see its surface.

I've been following the search for exo-planets for a while. This isn't really new news, but it's still great news. The planet's true shape, form, and location are not specifically known, though. It's still being observed.

However, even if the planet is of a perfect size, shape, and location and has an 'Earth-like' atmosphere, there's still a very high probability that life may not have started there. Even if it has, it's more likely that it's in the form of single-celled organisms or simple invertebrates and not some intelligent society like humans. (feel free to makes jokes)

Still, one can hope. It's unlikely we'll ever visit that planet within any conceivable amount of time, sadly. It's more likely we'll make radio contact over large spans of time. Though, truthfully, if there were life there and they were broadcasting radio signals, we'd have heard them by now.

20 Light Years?

Well, we could certainly make it there, though without cyrofreezing pods readily available, I think we'll need to make a generation ship [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_ship] to get there.

So... my first question:

Is it inhabited by xenomorphs or asari?

as exiting as this discovery is, I must be downer and remind every one that this planet is at best probably a super-massive "super-Earth" class planet, and a worst a "warm-Neptune" type. As the mass of this new planet isnt stated in the article, so I'm assuming it is like every other planet we have yet found and posses a mass many times that of earth; the only way you would be able to take a stroll on this planet is with the aid of a powered exo-skeleton.

Reach
You *****. I was going to post that!

OT: Neat, however I'm still skeptical on it being habitable. Its more massive than earth, which means higher gravity. Closer to its star than Earth is closer to Sol, which means much larger amounts of radiation, and doesn't spin much, which limits areas of habitability.

Still though, I'd go there. This planet seems to be going to hell, and our leaders are speeding up the process. Get me to Reach!

Good, if they claim that planet I'll stay here and finally be able to go to sleep at night without those god damn Catholics bugging me everyday. I don't mean that all Catholics bug me, but there are a few that won't shut the fuck up at my school and won't rest until every last person in the school converts. Just to be clear.[/quote]

I know what you mean. I'm Christian branch something-or-other, but I know what you mean. People in genral are always pushy about their beliefs. And then they wonder why there's so much hostility between faiths.
My thinking is the same as yours: Live and let die. Almost no-one discusses religion where I live; and we co-exist just fine. I just wish other places were like that, so people like you don't have this problem. I don't know you, but you seem to be someone who doesn't get pushy about their beliefs. If you don't try to convert, you shouldn't be the target of conversion. Sorry for this long monolauge; it's just that not enough people think like we do.
Bottom line: Religious people, keep it in your churches, temples, etc.
Nonreligious, keep it out.
