Being American... I would die loling if that happened. And after that happens, Great Britain would be like, "YEAH, SUCKS HUH!"
That was funny reading :p

Great this will be one of the first planets to checkout when I discover FTL travel, but I think I've heard of this gliese before so I guess this information isn't really new.
The sad part is that it is impossible to accelerate faster than the speed of light. From my understanding, it would require more energy than there exists in the universe to attain that speed. And twice as much to slow down.

No, we need to find a way to create wormholes or use whatever they did in Outlaw Star to travel through the vacuum of space.

Still, this is cool news, but completely expected. Eventually anyway.

Well then, time to go secure it in the name of the God Emperor. Who is with me!?

OT: Wonder if there is anything of interest there at all though.
no, we need to claim it in the name of the Aun'Va and the greater good!

but yeah, this sounds pretty sweet, hopefully we get there before we run out of shit on this planet. And hopefully there is plenty of stuff there to kill, so that we don't end up killing each other.

anyone know from various sci-fi how far away earth-like planets were? ie vulcan, reach etc etc it'd be an interesting comparison fiction to science

I am by your side.

But who shall be our God Emperor?
Leto Atredies II of course. Thought that part was a no-brainer.

Reach is 10.5 light years from Earth.

Vulcan, supposedly, about 16 light years

I'll see if I can find other "notable scifi planets"

The religious implications are going to be fun to watch. Lets see what the Vatican does here.
Actually, the Vatican already beat you to it. Two years ago. Probably not the best source, but you can read about it here [http://blackmailbox.wordpress.com/2009/12/01/vatican-prepares-for-extraterrestrial-disclosure/].

In short, the Vatican states that extraterrestrial life poses no challenge to Catholic theology, stating that extraterrestrial life is still a part of creation.

Why do people always assume that all religion is completely espoused from scientific thought?

OT: Great. Now how are we going to get ourselves/something there? It's one thing to find something. It's another to actually run tests and obtain much more concrete data.

Probably try to claim it as a Catholic only planet?

OT: I'm actually more curious which government/corporation will try to own it first.
Good, if they claim that planet I'll stay here and finally be able to go to sleep at night without those god damn Catholics bugging me everyday. I don't mean that all Catholics bug me, but there are a few that won't shut the fuck up at my school and won't rest until every last person in the school converts. Just to be clear.

If there isn't already a civilization or two there let's colonize the hell out of that planet!
If there is let's attempt to get friendly with them and hope they don't have the technology to wipe us all out.

I could've sworn I've seen information about a new, potentially inhabitable planet that was 20 light years away and possessed the necessary prerequisites for life in Stephen Hawking's documentary into the universe. Strangely enough, this new planet was discovered today orbiting the star gilese 581, so it must've been a different planet that Stephen Hawking was talking about.

I guess I'm just having one of those days.

Technically worm holes are faster than light because you get there before light would, thus faster than light.

Hold out hope a little longer, I'm working on figuring that out.
That wormhole part was a joke. I probably should have clarified. I highly doubt we will ever discover a way to creat wormholes IF they could even be used to travel such distances. Tons of factors. How do you create it? How do you control where you exit? How do you make the entrance and exit collapse? How do you keep it stable? How much energy would it require? You get the picture.

Keep in mind there are other problems with space travel. Living space. Boredom. Food. Water. About a billion things in the universe that would want to destroy you, your ship, and the hot green skinned alien girl you just met.

I'm not saying its impossible. Just improbable. At least, with our current level of technology.

well what happens when you get to the speed of light is it takes more and more energy as an object grows in mass at high speeds. This effectivly means that it would take an infinite amount of energy to move a single atom to light speed. It is one of the only impossible things.
Exactly my point. Thank you for clarifing it.

I remember reading somewhere that some Theoretical Physicists said that we could travel faster than light. It just takes a type of energy we have yet to discover.

That sounds like a good job though. Make up some shit and get paid big time
The problem is that is a theory. I can theorize that you are a cat. That doesn't make it true. Sometimes, I really hate scientists. They seem to watch sci-fi and then try to come up with reasons that it IS possible. Can't they stick to things we can actually prove.

Case in point. The multiverse theory. Yeah, that is a real theory. My problem with it? It's completely untestable. How can you prove or disprove something you can't possibly test?

By smoking a single cigarette, looking at the camera, and saying

"Ya, well, prove my theory wrong *****"

That is how I do it.

The improbability drive is always an option, along with warp technology of some sort.

"The pyre was lit, and those loyal to Leyths and the Order set out and departure this world. We watched form the skies and beyond, Tera in engulfed in flames. This certainly wouldn't be the last time either. Whether or not we meet the same fate that all humans face was up for debat. For the time being all we can do is rebuild and someday unit fully."

-Lt.Creed of the 19th Phoenix Guard October 6th 2067 "The first pyre"

Huh, thats cool. Wish my future gene spawns get to live there some day.

EDIT: It would be funny if we got there around the aliens middle ages or something. We land and discover their tech is centuiers behind us. Be all scarying the hell out of them.

statistically speaking, the odds that there isn't intellegent life in the universe is astronomical, simply because of the number of planets that are out there. That said, the question of if we will ever contact them is a good one, and i think the answer depends on one thing, and one thing only. If we develop faster than light travel, we will contact them, if we do not, we won't. mankind doesnt have the patience to travel decades just to make contact, and if they can decode the transmissions that leave earth, intelligent aliens will most likely want nothing to do with our violent race.
