It's a great discovery, though it'll take a long, long, long time to get there, which sucks.

I'll begin this with asking how many people know how Oxygen started to be produced on earth? C'mon google it.
Then read how long it took, then the chances were for it to happen, yeah. We are lucky bastards, anyway there are low chances for that to happen there as well, but then again a lifeform who lives on other things than oxygen is a possibility i suppose. Lets just hope that when we get there, we don't find predators (Yeah had to make a crack at a Sci-fi Movie(and a bad one at that). And another hope filled statement that whatever we find there, we don't screw up their/it's environment. (Wonder how many people bother to both read, and Google what was here)?

And as i forgot to write, if we were to be able to make a spaceship who were able to go there at top speed (Speed of light)((though there is a theory that something can move faster than the speed of light, Ask me if you want me to go deeper into it)) anyway lets say first 7years to grow, then 15-20 years of school, then 4-8 years of special training, 20 years to travel there, 20 years to go back... yeah lets hope our life span increases before we get to the point of going there. or else the travelers will forget all they saw before they get back. (Though we could probably get cryogenic to a working state before that, there are many factors to this whole thing).

There was already a thread about this, but I will tell you what I told them.
If the planet can support life forms, then yay for exploration and shit, but I highly doubt we'll meet any intellectual equals or superiors. If any life at all. Although.... It might be useful as an emergency escape form Earth when Global Warming catches up to us...

Last week, a group of U.S. Air Force officers came forward to discuss their encounters with UFO's that were classified for years.

Now we "discover" a planet that may or may not be capable of supporting "life?"

Nobody seeing a connection here? Nobody? No connection whatsoever..

The religious implications are going to be fun to watch. Lets see what the Vatican does here.
How so?
Just because their are more planets doesn't mean that Catholicism has been debunked or anything.

OP: I can has Star Wars lifestyle now?
How so what? I never stated an action. My post was for want of action. I never said anything about debunking Catholicism.
I know. I just wanted to know what you thought would happen.

Really, IM still unconvienced there even IS a planet like ours. I hate to break it, but the images we've seen arent fully recognizable and half of the picture ive seen have been artist redering. I dont know if this planet is like ours yet and we probably wont know for a while and even if it was we still would have nothing to do with that information. Sure, its a cool thing to know, but it doesnt help us much with anything at the moment does it?

Great this will be one of the first planets to checkout when I discover FTL travel, but I think I've heard of this gliese before so I guess this information isn't really new.
The sad part is that it is impossible to accelerate faster than the speed of light. From my understanding, it would require more energy than there exists in the universe to attain that speed. And twice as much to slow down.

No, we need to find a way to create wormholes or use whatever they did in Outlaw Star to travel through the vacuum of space.

Still, this is cool news, but completely expected. Eventually anyway.
I'm surprised you didn't bring up how equally problematic it is simply accelerating TO the speed of light let alone FASTER than the speed of light.

Wormholes would be great! Or someway to warp reality around a space so as to change the "rules" regarding near, or faster than, light speed within that space.

If we could get to 1/2 of light speed we'd be to the planet in 40 years, lets get crackin!
I was thinking the whole "more energy than exists in the universe" part was a pretty big damper on the whole endeaver. Gotta admit that is a ton of energy.

I read a Cracked article about why space travel would suck a while back. Put a huge damper on the whole concept. There are a lot of interesting theories to get past some of these problems, but they are largely impracticle if not outright impossible.
Well I'll settle for 1/4th light speed and 80 years then. =(
