I notice some commonalities:

Some complain that its not nice to pick on Russians. Its a fictional story, get over it. If you want a game where the Russians are the best, go play World of Tanks.

Others state that the Russians really are the enemy, or soulless killing machines that eat babies, etc. Stop living in the past. Its a fictional story.

===

If you need some positive spin, you can think of it as Russians were chosen as the enemy in the game because they are one of the very few who could legitimately give the US a challenge.

After shooting your way through the Sierra Leone level, do you think they would have put up a credible invasion of the US?

I'm not saying it's good, but it's more effective. Russians in Afghanistan didn't give a damn about how long they were there or what they did. They were brainwashed blood-crazed warriors.
i would not say thats a good thing, nothing good is accomplished when your army is cold hearted and lacks compassion what so ever.

"Modern" Nazis - Make an alternate time-line where ww2 never ended. See, you can't use actual nazis because they want to make a modern game.
They can say a rouge Nazi cell has risen to power in Germany due to the modern economy going down. They rescued the economy by blaming some small minority of people (doesn't have to be Jews, could be pretty much any non-german), just like Hitler did (maybe even make the leader Hitler's grandson or something). These New Nazi's then use Neo-nazi groups from around the world to cause problems within their respective nations, overthrowing the smaller nations and sabotaging the rest.

The Germans and their newly acquired industrial and economic superiority create a massive army that sets out to create the 4th Reich. Nuclear weapons have conveniently vanished for plot reasons. You play as a British soldier fighting the New Nazi's as they invade England. Instead of kicking massive amounts of German arse, the tea drinkers are the ones getting pounded. Even when the US shows up and tries to save the day, things don't really improve for the allies.

The allies get desperate and send you and an American buddy (so the US can say the Brits just helped them do it) out to kill the German leader via .50 cal to the mustache. After succeeding, the Nazi leaders begin to faulter in the chaos and thusly giving the Allies a chance to get some momentum.

Shortly after being pushed out of Britain, the power struggle in Germany ends and a unified Nazi stands united to defend the shores of Europe. A rebellion in Italy and Iberia (Spain and Portugal for those that don't know their geography) gives the allies a chance to break into France. Shortly after quelling the Iberian-Italian group, they come back to pound some English noggins and force them back to the beaches. Then the Russians decide to join the fray despite having signed neutrality papers to avoid another devastating war. Their massive hordes of bearded men on bears finally tips the balance fully in favor of the allies. They fight hard to the end, but ultimately the Nazis fall. Afterwards, all Neo-Nazi groups in the other nations are rounded up and dealt with (stripped and left in a Russian winter, that way they can find a way to survive and come back for the sequel).

I just pulled that out of me arse, so either I am more creative than the entirety of video game writers or they just aren't trying.

Yes, our soldiers can live off a bag of potatoes and a bottle of vodka a week, but only if you throw in pickles(great remover of taste after a shot of vodka), some meat and music instruments. And we are also upset if one of our comrades dies in battle, but instead of crying all the time and then go to peace rallies wasting our time while the Rest of our soldiers get annihilated, we transform that grief into rage and go avenge our fallen brethren. But that does not make us brainwashed blood-crazed warriors. It only makes us not-pussies. I can understand how you sit in the US threatening weak-ass countries with weak-ass armies and then cry about how your soldiers die, but Russia was the target of almost every major invasion since the middle ages. Mongols came for us, Teutonic Knight Orders, German Imperial & Nazi armies, Swedes, Turks, the French(led by Napoleon himself), the English, the Polish?Lithuanian Commonwealth and last but not least: The Japanese. But were still the largest country in the world. And we don't even hold real grudges against all our past adversaries. Watch the "Battle Of Russia" segment out the famous American "Why we fight"-series. Despite some mistakes in details, it shows the right idea about Russia.

P.S. Here's the movie I was talking about.

1. generation kill was shit and had such a slam against the war and the soldiers it was almost sickening.
2. Marines usually have to pay alot of this with their own money, and they signed up for some fucking hard training and have bullets shot at them and risk road side bombs on a daily basis in a fucking desert. you dont have room to call them "pussies" or "spoiled". just because russians are batshit insane doesn't mean a military HAS to be insane as well. after all, would you rather have insane soldiers that treated the populace like shit in the name of a dictator or Regular soldiers who have sympathy and actually help rebuild cities and supply medical equipment and other stuff?
and for the record, russians have had the highest death toll than most other countries since WW1, apparently they may be able to survive but not as well as you think.

also i find your generalization of Russians in pretty poor taste. Russians have emotions and their own style of coping with it. and i respect them for it. who am i too judge?

but in all honestly, the russian being the enemy in games is getting old.

that's because I was born & raised in Russia, but had to move from there during the 90' cuz Jeltsin(a particularly alcoholic and kind of criminally stupid president) sold the Russian economy out to the West and we all plunged into chaos and poverty. After Putin took over, things calmed down and we go uphill once again, so I plan on maybe moving back when I'm done studying.

Okay, my friend once posted this in a forum, concerning Russia, and it was a very, say, anti-Russian thread.
I quote here:

''Don't worry, Cold war is over! you can stop hating peoples beliefs for no reason!''

Honestly though, if the US was portrayed like the way Russia is portrayed in MW3, the media would slaughter It, and how.
I was born & raised by 'EVIL' ex-commies who had to leave Russia because Mr.Goombenchav(Gorbenchav) & later Mr.Jeltsin sold the Russian (along with Ukranian) Economy to the west and plunged the country into the ground. When Putin restored some more communistic factors into the government, things calmed down a bit. Russia & Ukraine are still complete hellholes, though, those are types of countries that NEED a strict(Or Communist) government, just look at the state of the country.

I concur, the game seems to have lost the plot of MW2 that the Russians are being played by Makarov (making lots a money) and that the Americans are being played by Shepard (recruitment drives to make up for his fuck up in un-named-istan (Nuke) in COD4) and has just gone straight to 'America, fuck yeah' (well UN slightly)..

Honestly, I thought they had a good idea that these soldiers were fighting for no reason but it seems out of no-where the USA now has justification to wipe Russia off the map.. bit unfair really as there's only really a one man villain for the game now.. Makorov..

TL:DR, I don't want to fight Ruskies any more, or Nazis, terrorists and middle Eastern people.. I want a game set during the American civil war in the early parts which allows me to be a British regular who's allowed to shoot American colonists with a musket.. I think that'll go down well.. especially in Britain

Yeah, the story would be nice if the soldiers were presented as pieces in a game of chess but instead what we got is a media-friendly game (just invented a term, fuck yeah)

generation kill had me going for two episodes, then it just became a mean spirited skewed version on the war (not saying it was sunshine a lolipops but good god!). Besides the guy who wrote it worked for rolling stone magazine, cant fucking stand them.
